The pub itself is charming and quaint and the food was sublime! I had a shared starter which was ample for two and included cold cuts of wild boar, duck and chicken with olives, fresh bread and plenty of other bits to dip and nibble at. Everyone enjoyed their main courses and the lamb shank I chose fell off the bone and melted in the mouth. Since it was a birthday celebration, we all forced down desserts as well to make the most of the evening! The pub is more upmarket than most and this is reflected in the clientèle. It's warm, friendly and relaxed. The staff were all friendly and attentive without pestering you every five minutes and I really can't fault the experience. Perhaps the only reason I've dropped a star is because of the price with a meal for 3 costing me a couple of pounds short of £100 but they say you get what you pay for and the Sparrow Hawk is a case in point.

There's a good range of draft beers on offer as well as the usual spirits and bottled drinks you'd expect to find in a pub. Inside, the atmosphere is friendly and cosy, although it can be a little on the dark and dingy side due to the poor lighting. On a summer's day, the beer garden is a great place to sit out and enjoy a drink or two. The views across the surrounding countryside are fantastic and is a relaxing and enjoyable place to pass a summer's afternoon.

Set over three floors, Smacks is a great bar / club that sells a decent range of drinks at decent prices and has some fantastic Indie, Rock and Alternative music to boot. It's a relaxed place and it isn't filled with drunken chavs or pretentious idiots, just down to earth people who want to have a good night out. It's also one of the few places where all my girlfriends like to go on a girl's night out and between us, we have a very eclectic taste in music. This is a fab little bar and no night out in Burnley is complete without at least one drink in Smacks.

On arrival at 6pm there were people walking out in disgust as they were unable to be served, the carvery had been stopped as they had not prepared enough vegetables, but we were still able to order off the main menu. We did this, 5 of my family got served their food after 40 mins, a further 20 minutes later my food of sausage and mash arrived, my family had finished their eating but were happy to wait for me but it looked and smelt awful, the mash which is usually gorgeous was hard, cold and dry, the waitress noticed my face and offered to sort it out but by this time I had had enough, she came back and offered me a free cake but I didn't want a cake, in the end she took the food back and reimbursed my meal, I left disappointed and still hungry. Out of my family 2 meals had to be sorted out as one was incorrect and one was such a meagre portion and the ham had more fat than meat that we asked for it to be sorted. Hopefully this is a one off occurrence but be warned.

Guys as Dolls is a friendly little pub which opens well into the small hours on weekend evenings and combines plenty of kitsch tunes to dance and sing along to with cabaret performances from some very convincing drag queens. As a single girl, Guys and Dolls perhaps isn't my favourite place for a night out since my chances of finding Mr Right are remote to say the least but it is still a fun and cheesy night out full of laughs and well worth a visit if you're in Burnley and looking for an alternative night out on town.

It's not located in the town centre, but it's only a couple of minute's walk away and this does mean you're less likely to find drunken louts and fights breaking out. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is nice for a chilled night out for a few drinks, especially if you appreciate decent live music.

The 4 hand-pulls on offer were Golden Best, Boltmaker, Landlord and Le Champion, and all were on good form. We didn't stay for food, but the place looked popular enough and the meals were rather enticing on inspection of other tables. From a welcoming, friendly point of view, the place can't be faulted with the service from the bar staff especially pleasant.

As you walk in you can tell it's a very friendly, cosy traditional pub type restaurant. We ordered our drinks and the lady asked we was eating which we were so they gave us a menu and said if we'd like to sit in the bar while we choose. We ordered our meals and within 5 minutes we went downstairs to the restaurant area and more or less our starters came. I had prawn cocktail which was excellently presented and very nice, then had surf and turf which again was excellently presented exactly how I ordered it Medium rare and was delicious. We also ordered some beer battered onion rings which were gigantic but really nice. All together it came to about £35 for both of us including drinks and highly recommended.
