The pub itself is charming and quaint and the food was sublime! I had a shared starter which was ample for two and included cold cuts of wild boar, duck and chicken with olives, fresh bread and plenty of other bits to dip and nibble at. Everyone enjoyed their main courses and the lamb shank I chose fell off the bone and melted in the mouth. Since it was a birthday celebration, we all forced down desserts as well to make the most of the evening! The pub is more upmarket than most and this is reflected in the clientèle. It's warm, friendly and relaxed. The staff were all friendly and attentive without pestering you every five minutes and I really can't fault the experience. Perhaps the only reason I've dropped a star is because of the price with a meal for 3 costing me a couple of pounds short of £100 but they say you get what you pay for and the Sparrow Hawk is a case in point.

The staff were ok , efficient and the service was very quick. we ordered prawn sandwiches with chips, the chips were amazing, whatever you order try the chips!!!! Not cheap at £2.25 for a cone but just get one to share at! the Topariary Restaurant always gets good reviews and everyone says the food is good at the functions there.

But we should have known by the price of food advertisements outside ("2 meals for the price of 1!"-- which my husband says is the telltale sign that the food will be bad) that we should have skipped right over this place for a more quaint, out of the way pub on our way for a day out in Skipton. But hunger won out and we went in just the same. Upon first glance, it wasn't so bad. Your typical road side chain pub. It looked clean, there were a fair number of people in for lunch and there were no disturbing smells or sounds emanating from anywhere. But the next clue of what was to come-- the inordinate amount of gambling and video games throughout, should have sent us running the other way. The menu was massive-- another clue that the food was to be mediocre at best. As Gordon Ramsey always says, be good at a few things, you can't be good at it all (well, he doesn't say it like that exactly, and surely there would be a lot more expletives thrown in there but you catch my drift). There was so much, I didn't know what to choose... but it wouldn't have mattered. It was all pretty dismal. But what really did it in was the service. I've certainly come to have low expectations of service in general in England-- and no, I shouldn't expect much from a roadside pub, but this was spectacularly bad. Particularly given that it was the kind of place where you order at the bar and they just (almost literally) throw your food at you. I doubt that many people could have been having that bad of a day-- unless they were all told the pub was going out of business and they were all being made redundant. Well, maybe that's not too far-fetched. But they all did look like their dog had gotten hit by a mail truck. The atmosphere was that desperate. Long story short? Keep driving-- there's more to be found further down the motorway...

A true Lancashire working mens club. Housed in a 400 year old building A warm friendly greeting…read morefrom members young and old. A frosty greeting from a grumpy but "popularish steward" I am told. He was nearly funny a couple of times. Big fans of cask ale here and they currently sell Timmy Taylors best bitter which I could have got "bathed" in and also Moorhouses Broomstick Bitter which is brewed down the road in Burnley. The club has recently won awards from East Lancashire CAMRA. Good cheap drinks here and all they ask is that you sign in at the door. They do not have a doorperson but ask for visitors integrity and honesty with a 50p "ten bob" entry fee. Non members are made very welcome and even by "The Bar Steward" at times I hear. One member I spoke to was very proud of the club and was rightly boastful about how well it was doing in the current climate of Pubs & Clubs closing down all the time. They have Snooker Pool and Darts on the go with several teams representing the club in local leagues. A nice lounge leads through to the games areas and there is a great beer garden/patio area at the front and another large outdoor area to the side of the Club. With over 300 members this is a good busy Club and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The Prairie is a large pub on the outskirts of Burnley, close to Burnley Hospital. It has recently…read moreundergone some renovations works and has been reopened as a much smarter and more modern looking pub. The pub sells a range of reasonably priced pub food which, whilst far from amazing, is tasty enough and fills a hole. The service is relatively quick so you can pop in for a quick lunch even if you're on your lunch hour and you should be able to eat and get back to the office without upsetting your boss too much! The drinks on offer are pretty much standard for most pubs and the prices are reasonable. The Prairie is an out of town pub so it doesn't tend to get very busy but there is parking which makes it easier to access if you're driving, just remember not to drink and drive.
