But hunger won out and we went in just the same. Upon first glance, it wasn't so bad. Your typical road side chain pub. It looked clean, there were a fair number of people in for lunch and there were no disturbing smells or sounds emanating from anywhere. But the next clue of what was to come-- the inordinate amount of gambling and video games throughout, should have sent us running the other way. The menu was massive-- another clue that the food was to be mediocre at best. As Gordon Ramsey always says, be good at a few things, you can't be good at it all (well, he doesn't say it like that exactly, and surely there would be a lot more expletives thrown in there but you catch my drift). There was so much, I didn't know what to choose... but it wouldn't have mattered. It was all pretty dismal. But what really did it in was the service. I've certainly come to have low expectations of service in general in England-- and no, I shouldn't expect much from a roadside pub, but this was spectacularly bad. Particularly given that it was the kind of place where you order at the bar and they just (almost literally) throw your food at you. A frosty greeting from a grumpy but "popularish steward" I am told. He was nearly funny a couple of times. Big fans of cask ale here and they currently sell Timmy Taylors best bitter which I could have got "bathed" in and also Moorhouses Broomstick Bitter which is brewed down the road in Burnley. The club has recently won awards from East Lancashire CAMRA. Good cheap drinks here and all they ask is that you sign in at the door. They do not have a doorperson but ask for visitors integrity and honesty with a 50p "ten bob" entry fee. Non members are made very welcome and even by "The Bar Steward" at times I hear. One member I spoke to was very proud of the club and was rightly boastful about how well it was doing in the current climate of Pubs & Clubs closing down all the time. They have Snooker Pool and Darts on the go with several teams representing the club in local leagues. A nice lounge leads through to the games areas and there is a great beer garden/patio area at the front and another large outdoor area to the side of the Club. With over 300 members this is a good busy Club and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The Prairie is a large pub on the outskirts of Burnley, close to Burnley Hospital. The pub sells a range of reasonably priced pub food which, whilst far from amazing, is tasty enough and fills a hole. The service is relatively quick so you can pop in for a quick lunch even if you're on your lunch hour and you should be able to eat and get back to the office without upsetting your boss too much! The drinks on offer are pretty much standard for most pubs and the prices are reasonable. The Prairie is an out of town pub so it doesn't tend to get very busy but there is parking which makes it easier to access if you're driving, just remember not to drink and drive.
