This whitewashed inn accessed over an old packhorse bridge claims to 'probably' be Yorkshire's oldest (1307). Got to love them covering themselves for inaccuracy there. That's over seven centuries of beery goodness which was open for trade 40 years before the Black Death! A gem of a building with wooden beams throughout - the layout inside is stepped as it's built on a decline so disabled access is obviously limited (you may wish to phone in advance if you or your family member has any mobility concerns). There's plenty of seating throughout, however, with some set back in nooks in the walls. As well as serving real ale from independent brewers, they stock genuine imported lagers from around the world. Their fridge of bottled beers looked quite comprehensive. They also have guest beers which change regularly - when I visited they had Jaipur from Thornbridge on (one of my all time favourites). They serve food but we didn't eat here on this occasion. I can guarantee I will be a punter here again when I'm over next time.

It is very popular with the locals, as well as people travelling from the other surrounding towns/areas. This is a very clean pub and all facilities are good. The staff are very friendly and eager to please. Local beers are available, along with the regular type of drinks - and prices are reasonable. There is a selection of bar snacks and restaurant-type of food. I have, personally, only ever had food from the bar snacks, but the portions are good and well presented. There is also, a beer garden and smoking facilities. Throughout the week, entertainment is on, and they often have music form local acts. The menu is varied and reasonably priced, and you will not have to wait too long for your food. There is parking space available. Many people park up and go for a walk along the canal, where you may see a barge or two, gliding by. You will more than likely enounter the resident ducks, who are forever on the look-out for food! After a stroll and a breath of fresh air - many then head in for a bite to eat and a drink, or two. There are a good selection of drinks available and the prices are reasonable, too. So after blowing away the cobwebs on a chilly walk along the byways of Saddleworth, soaking in the views of the valleys and reservoirs, we completed the loop and were back at The Rams Head Inn for a much-needed Sunday feast. With two nippers in tow we opted for the side seating area away from the main dining room, which meant we were nicely self-contained and also fellow diners didn't have to endure 'toddler carnage'! You can select from their main menu here, as well as their bar menu. Not wanting to pass up on the chance to try a full meal I decided on wild boar & apple terrine for starter and lamb shank for mains - both were terrific; there was a generous portion of terrine and the lamb sloughed off the bone thanks to its cooking for 24 hours. If I see lemon meringue on any menu I'm compelled to order it and so it was done. Gorgeous it was too, more so with lashings of cream (I was telling myself I needed to replenish all those calories lost climbing over walls and ascending gravelled tracks...). For lighter dishes the bar menu certainly had some tempting options; ones I'll try when we come back again. Luckily a friend recently recommended the Rams Head which has a nice moderate 3 mile walk that starts from from the back of the pub- win win! Anyway, enough of that exercise malarkey and onto the food! The Rams Head offers both a main menu for their dining room and a more casual lounge menu which was can be taken in their snug type room, complete with cosy wood burning stove. As we planned on our walk afterwards (and the winter sun was getting lower in the sky) we opted for the lounge menu which has an array of hot and cold sandwiches and 'something different' items such as game terrine and locally reared pork pies. Not being able to choose, my husband and I decided to order a hot beef and gravy sandwich and a slow roasted pork with stuffing, apple sauce and gravy sandwich to share. It's all pretty casual and so you order at the bar at which point my husband was persuaded to order a portion of the homemade chips as well. This turned out to be a brilliant decision as they were some of the best chips I've had in ages! When the sandwiches arrived they came in enormous white rolls with an equally good amount of filling and two little jugs of gravy for dipping and were absolutely delicious. You could tell the meat was really good quality (the menu advises on provenance) and the gravy that came with it was proper homemade gravy, as it should be. I can't comment on the boozy side of things as we opted for a cuppa each. This actually came served in a pot with Yorkshire's finest loose leaf and a generous pot of milk- always a bug bear of mine when they scrimp on the milk. They also have an onsite shop called The Pantry which sells locally raised meat, cheese and posh tea/biscuits etc, along with what looked to be a good selection of wine. The Pantry has a small number of tables if you prefer a cafe environment to eat in. This for me is a perfect country pub and I shall be returning here asap to try out the full menu. The food is very much influenced from the Mediterranean part of the world. But on Wednesday's & Thursday's, they feature a special 'Around the World' menu, too. They have a great selection of wines, beers, & drinks, in the house. There is limited parking, around the area. This is not a place for those on a tight budget - the wine & specials can make it very expensive. However, it is a great place for a special occasion/celebration. Or a romantic meal. In the Summer months, this is a fantastic place to sit out on the decking area, which creates a pleasant atmosphere - al fresco style.

This pub has a very young clientiele - and I wouldnt be surprized if many of its punters are under age! At the week-ends, it can get very rowdy and over-crowded, with music blaring out. The drinks range is satisfatory and prices ok. I wouldnt recommend going here for something to eat. The food quality and presentation is very poor, to say the least. Toilet facilities leave alot to be desired - they could do with a total re-vamp, in fact the whole place could do with it, quite frankly. There is definately a problem with 'your shoes sticking to the carpet' syndrome and the smell of the place is not too pleasant either. There is space at the back for people to congregate and smoke - again it can get quite noisy and packed. All in all, I would not really recommend anyone going to this establishment.

Well worth a visit. This pub is dog friendly but beware resident cat "snug" is first in the pecking order for all those leftovers.
