I'm not too sure why no one ever felt that they were more enamoured of this place, but I suppose on a surface level, a pub is a pub is a pub. However, I'm going to assume that previous reviewers haven't experienced the music pub quiz, which goes some way toward my affection for this cosy and welcoming local to the folks of Chapel A.
To begin, yep. It's a pub. It has nooks, cosy little rooms, and if you're new to it, that slightly labyrinthine vibe. To be honest, if memory serves, it's none too large -but somehow still felt a bit like a maze. It's a proper old local, with hand pulled cask ales, half lagers and packets of crisps. (Or Nobbys nuts, if you prefer.) There's a darts board, there's a flat screen TV, there's some excellent established bar staff to take your order. Of particular note includes the fine facial hair of one said bar man. Topped off with a tie dye t-shirt and Australian style leather hat, and you know this is one serious dude. In fact, I'm sure he was an understudy for the Big Lebowski. Or, at least, I'm going to spread that befitting rumour.
So, said dude runs the music quiz. This quiz is easily one of the toughest, but most enjoyable, around. Designed for true music fans, there are forty questions, and they come in a unique style to most quizzes I've partaken in. First 5 questions you've to guess the artist, next five the song name, then there's 10 on a picture round, an anagram, guess the year and more. If we'd not some true music buffs on our team, I'm sure I'd have been too embarrassed to hand in the sheet. Turns out we just about retained dignity with 25/40/ (Yeah, I know. It's a poor effort.)
The other bit of trivia to this quiz is that it's been running for eons -perhaps 15 years or so, and to that end, is an institution in Leeds. Essentially, what I'm saying is, that when you're faced with a pub that is as standard as the next in structure, it's details like the above that make it stand out. Go for the awesome bar dude, and his vapour pipe, but stay for the music quiz and friendly locals.
I am a fan. read more
