Huge portions of great pub food. There's nothing fancy here. Just good honest food…read more The carvery has a constant queue of people at it. With 3 or 4 meat choices, 3 sizes of plates and loads of veg is easy to see why. And not just a roastie and soggy green cabbage; alongside the standard roasties there's loads of twists to help yourself too, like cajun spiced roasts, cauliflower cheese, braised red cabbage, garlic new potatoes and more. Of course there's Yorkshire, 2 types of stuffing and 2 types of gravy!!! Epic. Dont fancy the carvery? There's a full menu of dishes. I couldn't eat 2 courses here as they are too big where a starter would be a main portion elsewhere. My pics were of 3 menu dishes which were all around £8.50. Size doesn't stop with dessert either with towering icecreams and 4 layer cakes of every description. My top tip would be to get a #CakeAway. With collosal mains, take your giant desert home with you and share it with a friend - after you've had a hour to work of the main course. A great family place, weekend roast or a midweek meal.

We went for a family meal this Bank Holiday all prepared to queue for the carvery as we had been out of the country for a while and fancied something tasty and wholesome, we had booked the week previously. On arrival at 6pm there were people walking out in disgust as they were unable to be served, the carvery had been stopped as they had not prepared enough vegetables, but we were still able to order off the main menu. We did this, 5 of my family got served their food after 40 mins, a further 20 minutes later my food of sausage and mash arrived, my family had finished their eating but were happy to wait for me but it looked and smelt awful, the mash which is usually gorgeous was hard, cold and dry, the waitress noticed my face and offered to sort it out but by this time I had had enough, she came back and offered me a free cake but I didn't want a cake, in the end she took the food back and reimbursed my meal, I left disappointed and still hungry. Out of my family 2 meals had to be sorted out as one was incorrect and one was such a meagre portion and the ham had more fat than meat that we asked for it to be sorted. Hopefully this is a one off occurrence but be warned.

My friends treated me to a meal at the Sparrow Hawk in Fence for my birthday (well I treated them…read moreactually) and it was refreshing to find somewhere that sells genuine fine cuisine in the Burnley area. The pub itself is charming and quaint and the food was sublime! I had a shared starter which was ample for two and included cold cuts of wild boar, duck and chicken with olives, fresh bread and plenty of other bits to dip and nibble at. Everyone enjoyed their main courses and the lamb shank I chose fell off the bone and melted in the mouth. Since it was a birthday celebration, we all forced down desserts as well to make the most of the evening! The pub is more upmarket than most and this is reflected in the clientèle. It's warm, friendly and relaxed. The staff were all friendly and attentive without pestering you every five minutes and I really can't fault the experience. Perhaps the only reason I've dropped a star is because of the price with a meal for 3 costing me a couple of pounds short of £100 but they say you get what you pay for and the Sparrow Hawk is a case in point.

Just love the real fires, they give the place a unique extra special feeling. The foods always excellent quality, well presented and worth the time to visit even if its out of your way. I keep updated on their web site for events and special days. You do need to book on occasions as it is popular, I'll very likely be there as it is one of our favourite places, we just can't stay away.

I have heard mixed reviews about this place, so a couple of months ago when searching for somewhere…read morefor lunch, I decided to give it a go. I'll start off with the negatives so I can end on the positives.... Firstly, the welcome wasn't really there. We certainly weren't made to feel like a burden, but I don't think they've really got this part of the hospitality figured out yet! You sort of stand around for a minute or two until someone works out that you want to eat and then attends you. Secondly, and the final negative, is that when seated we were waiting quite a long time for drinks when we re-ordered them. Don't get me wrong, we were not neglected, but a swifter drinks-to-table response would enhance the whole meal 'experience'. Ok - with the negatives out of the way, let me tell you what's good about this place, and why I have been back several times over the last couple of months. The food is great. It's quintessentially British cuisine and for the quality, reasonably priced. You don't wait too long for food either. Having said this, it's not flung at you so fast that you feel like they're trying to rush you through and out the door, either. Drinks are average pub prices for the area, and they have one or two nice cask ales on too, for the real ale fans. The staff are helpful, if (at times) seemingly rushed off their feet and the menu, though simple, is well practised and executed by the kitchen staff. The décor is contemporary, whilst retaining that classic 'pub' atmosphere, and the stone floored area harkens back to the bygone era of bushy bearded men enjoying a pint with their chums whilst the border collie snoozes by the fire. As I've said, I have been back several times, and will return again. Although I've not quite had EVERYTHING on the menu, I'm confident that those that I've not tried will be as good as the ones that I have, and that means they'll be fantastic!
