I live very close to another local ice cream shop which has kept me from driving over here. I finally decided to stop by with my husband and I'm very happy we did! Cromwell Creamery has so many great flavors available. After struggling to decide, I finally settled on 2 special flavors: Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Strawberry Shortcake. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch tasted like the leftover milk after eating the cereal, and the Strawberry Shortcake had generous amounts of crunchy pieces - it was my favorite! Don't overlook this place!! I've never seen a better bang for your buck when it comes to ice cream. A waffle cone with basically a pint of ice cream is only $5.75. Insane. So many flavors to choose from. I noticed all the regulars were ordering the Peanut Butter Pie and I regret not getting it but the moose tracks was great and super chunky. Maple bourbon pecan was ok but wouldn't get it again. I tried a bite of the Graham flavor and it was super sweet. The cappuccino chip was great too. I definitely like the variety offered at this creamery. Staff was very nice to both me and my dog. My absolute favorite here is the Maine Black Bear tracks , but it seems to be a favorite because they are often out- it seemed like the creamery was out of a lot of specials on the board but unsure if this was just due to coming out of a holiday weekend. Overall I like to return often- It generally has a couple people there when u go but never too busy. Setting is a dairy style window with about 3 tables, there is no indoor area. After a Yelp search, we made an Impromptu visit for a post-dinner ice cream Sundae. We've been to numerous great ice cream shops across the State this year. Cromwell Creamery was good, but is not among my favorites. Service was fine. The location was OK, but lacked the charm of some of the best ice cream shops around. I ordered a Sundae with a scoop of mint chocolate chip, a scoop of pretzel caramel ice cream, hot fudge, peanut butter sauce and Reece's Pieces. The ice cream was good quality. The hot fudge and peanut butter sauce were mostly on the bottom of the paper cup, which I didn't know, and it would have been hard to get with a plastic spoon if I tried. Sauce on the bottom is OK if you know it's there, if everything is in a glass bowl and if you have a metal spoon so you can dig deep, but if you can't get to the sauce until the ice cream is done, it's kind of pointless. I think Cromwell Creamery is a good option for people who live in the area. I'll stick with my favorites closer to home and across the State. read more

I've been coming to this place for years and it used to be really good, but it's completely mismanaged and unprofessional now. I ordered a regular soft serve twist cone with cherry dip, double dipped. When I received it, it was in a cup and it was already fully melted. I had to wait 10 minutes at the pickup window while other people waited for their ice cream to again come out melted. I said to the employee which was a young man that it was supposed to be a cone, before I could even tell him what flavor, he whisked it away, he didn't even ask what it was either. Granted, they were very busy, but people were waiting for ages for terrible service and melted ice cream. When I got the cone, it was vanilla (asked for swirl) melted (literally falling off the cone) and it wasn't even dipped, it's like someone poured a tablespoon of dip on it. It was so sad looking. With it being so busy, I didn't want to hold the line up anymore and subject other people to this mess, so I threw it away and left. Really disappointing from a place I used to love. You're better off going to Tall Man's honestly. read more

This place is justifiably legendary. Just outside Middletown, it's a bit off the beaten track but worth driving out to. The scoops are VERY generous (I got a kid sized cone and it was enormous). My usual test for an ice cream place is the soft ice cream, but I decided to get a special flavor, which was sort of like amarena -- sour cherry with a touch of almond. It was amazingly delicious. We were there in May and it was pretty hot so the outside seating (which seemed to be the only seats available) were perfect. I don't know what they do during colder weather. But if you're near Cromwell in the warmer months and even vaguely in the mood for ice cream, go to Cromwell Creamery. You will not regret it! Plus the prices are very very low. read more

Back open for the 2022 season! Not sure how I haven't reviewed Cromwell Creamery yet, as it's definitely one of the highlights of spring/summer for me. I've tried a few ice cream shops in the general area and this is my favorite. The flavors are decadent and the portions are large. Service is friendly and prompt. It's window service only but they do have a few tables out front if you want to enjoy right then. They offer A LOT of different flavors but my absolute favorite is chocolate chip. Let me begin by saying I'm a little bougie about my ice cream and I love a good ice cream. This place is a good 30 minutes from my house but we were mini golfing on the Berlin turnpike and we were 11 minutes away so I figured let's give it a try. The ice cream was not bad but not creamy to my liking. I had the butter pecan in a styrofoam cup which is my favorite flavor of ice cream, definitely not the best I've had but yummy enough. My sister had the toasted coconut on a sugar cone which she enjoyed. My son had the watermelon Italian ice which was part of their specials menu and it was pretty darn good and so refreshing to have during the 7th day of this awful heatwave. If they always have an Italian ice option on the menu we would definitely consider coming back! Walk-up only. At first, I was confused. Two windows, each with a sign saying, "Come In We're Open." There weren't any inviting doors? Then dude young gentleman opened a sliding window. "Hi, how may I help you?" "Yes. You're open, but how do I enter?" "We're only a walk-up." With a smile! "Well, okay, as long as I get a cone." Yay we finally got to try Cromwell Creamery! It's a walk-up counter only but they also have an inner area that they keep locked. So I'm guessing no bathrooms for customers. There are a few tables and umbrellas out front for seating. We treated ourselves to 2 sundaes: vanilla 'hard' ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, rainbow sprinkles and maraschino cherries. Also cookie dough 'hard' ice cream, with peanut butter sauce. The prices are pretty low and they give you about 3 scoops in the cup! We actually couldn't finish our sundaes and saved them in the freezer for the next day. For some reason even though there was no standing water anywhere in sight there were a ton of mosquitoes while we waited in line and it was May. Summer is ending and we needed to scratch our ice cream stand itch. Cromwell Creamery is right down the road, but far enough off the beaten path that we had never stopped until this year. We were shocked and saddened, when Mortensen's announced that they were closing their Cromwell location. The location did not stay vacant long. My husband was the first to see that the new occupants were going to be serving ice cream too. We were even more surprised to find out that Cromwell Creamery was run by the same people that own the Durham Dari Serve in Durham, CT. Double win for us! This is a cash only business. If you show up on a whim, no fears, there's an ATM across the street or around the block (American Eagle FC). Their prices are reasonable. $20 covers my family of three, the tip and we usually have about $5 left. Since opening, they have added some benches and picnic tables. On a busy day, you may end up sitting in the grass or standing. If you're like us, you have some of those foldable chairs in your trunk, so you'll be ok. Let's talk ice cream. 30 flavors of hard ice cream. You can get your ice cream in a cone (cake or waffle), a dish or a pint to go. They also serve soft serve, frozen yogurt, custard, Fluries, milkshakes and Sundaes. There are a handful of the usual ice cream toppings. I'm a traditionalist, I always get my ice cream (soft or hard) without any toppings. I also like to eat my hard ice cream while it's still hard. Unfortunately, the spoons that they give you here, do not stand up against the density of their ice cream. While trying to eat my S'Mores ice cream yesterday, my spoon was twisting and turning in my dish. I'm hoping for an upgrade on their spoons, or maybe I'll need to keep a special ice cream spoon in my car. Either way, we will probably be here once a week! read more

Stumbled upon this place and I'm glad I did ! Ice cream is thicccccc like my plastic spoon bent when I was scooping for a bite thicccccc. Flavor of the ice cream is awesome and the Cinnamon Toast Crunch and the graham slam are my favorite flavors I've had so far. No need to add toppings as the ice cream is great by itself probably gonna try all the flavors in like less then a weeks time but man that Cinnamon Toast Crunch and graham slam doesn't disappoint. This ice cream is the real deal. I discovered that Cromwell Creamery is walking distance from our home, a great reason to get out on these hot summer nights! Upon arriving, the line went pretty quickly, which gave us time to review the extensive menu options. My husband ordered a "hard ice cream" milkshake, which was thick and chocolaty. When I inquired about what was "safe" for me to eat with a food (nut) allergy, the staff was more than willing to use new, clean scoops in the hard ice cream, but couldn't guarantee that there hasn't already been cross contamination of allergens from other scoops (no different than 90% of ice cream shops out there). Certainly not a reason for me to remove a star, it's common and I didn't expect any different - they only want to ensure safety. I ended up ordering the swirl soft serve and was pleasantly surprised at how creamy it was! For a $3.00 regular size, it was HUGE. There are tables and chairs in front of the front window, but expect a crowd if it's a nice evening. Every time I drive by, it looks packed. If you are trying to decide between Cromwell Creamery or the Friendly's across the street, this would definitely be my preference of the two - shop & eat local! I've never been there, but I've heard many rave reviews from a number of different people who had. My husband and I have been here many times since they've changed hands and it's thankfully still great. The ice cream is high quality and there are a lot of flavors to choose from. I'm a huge coconut fan and the toasted coconut is the best that I've ever had. I've also tried the rocky road, chocolate peanut butter yogurt & chocolate almond & they were all creamy & delicious. There is minimal information online, especially in regards to when it is actually open. As well, there isn't anywhere to sit to actually eat the ice cream? I noticed one bench at the end of one parking spot, so we parked there to basically claim the bench. However, if someone else was parked there, it would have been super awkward to sit right in front of their car! Nevertheless, I love "homemade" ice cream and this was delicious! Another con is that there is really no place to eat the ice cream...there aren't any tables/chairs and the parking lot doesn't have much shade. I love these kinds of ice cream places - walk up window, run by a bunch of college kids, unique flavors, etc. And what a great variety of flavors this place had! The pistachio was chock full of nuts. The banana pudding was loaded with Nilla wafer cookies (just like grandma used to make!) and the blueberry was light and refreshing! I only wish I lived closer so I could visit more often and try all the other flavors! Glad I had cash as that is the only type of payment they accept. That's pretty typical for these mom and pop ice cream places, though. Also, there are no tables, inside or out (or no inside, for that matter). There are some trees in the parking lot, so it's not too hard to find a place to stand and cool off with a treat. Bonus: The car wash next door is eclectically themed, so it's pretty fun to lean against the car, eat a cone and check out the neighboring business. Really recommend this place.
