Great for the odd lunch or can cater for larger groups, both of which I've experienced with no problems. Well managed and customer service is top notch. You can tell all the colleagues take pride in what they do and it shows. Can get busy at times, and have had to wait a while for meals on a couple of occasions but we got our drinks for free for the wait - what more could you ask for? Open most days except for Sunday and Monday from noon until late.

It has the standard carvery menu that you get at places like this with a choice of beef, turkey, gammon and pork. On the few ocassions that I have been, the meat has been really nice and not too fatty at all. I usually go for the gammon and turkey (which was nice and moist). There are a selection of veg that you help yourself too. They have loads of different variety from your usual peas and carrots to apple mash and red cabbage with cranberry. Once you have piled your plate with veg, you move onto the gravey station where there are a selcetion of gravies (obvs!) and sauces, including bread sauce and apple sauce to name a few. On the whole, I find the Toby carveries much better quality than the Crown carveries, but then they are a tad more expensive. Just a word of warning though, as it was a cold day when we last visited, I had a tea rather than a soft drink. When the mug and saucer came, they wasn't really clean. This was also the case with another member of our party.

In fact, I think it was probably of less quality than standard pub food. I've had much better quality food at 2 for 1 pubs! Side salads leave a lot to be desired as my friend had limp lettuce and 1 slice of cucumber chopped up into small pieces. The starter of chipolata and Yorkshire puddings wasn't good as the sausage was burnt and the Yorkshires were frozen and reheated. We were charged for an extra bbq sauce (which wasn't clear on the menu or mentioned to us at time of ordering) and a Yorkshire pudding with a main meal which never materialised. The best part is the puddings as the portions are quite big, but then they are under the heading Giant Desserts. Like I say, bitterly disappointed and will be a while before I visit again

The food, the service, the ambience, the decor, and the price - everything was spot on. The restaurant is situated in the Humber Dock, the area around the docklands which has been redeveloped. The area is trendy with pubs and restaurants, a marina full of yachts and motor boats and lots of people walking, jogging or just sitting and watching the world go by. 1884, I found out, has a very good reputation in Hull and it is deservedly so. It also has a reputation for being expensive and if you just take the A la Carte menu then yes you will pay quite a lot but they also have an Evening Market Menu which available every night except for Saturday which offers 3 courses and a glass of fizz for £22 - that to me is exceptional value, especially when you taste the quality of the food. The choice on the evening was limited to two starters, two mains and two desserts. Between two of us we ordered everything on the menu. We were given warm bread to start which was so delicious we had to order more! The starters were a choice of a Ham hock terrine or Mozzarella with tomatoes. The description of either cannot come near to doing justice to just how delicious both of these starters were and how beautifully presented. The main courses were a choice between Hake or venison sausage. The fish came on a bed of champ with a butter sauce, baby shrimps and samphire. It was light and delicious and perfect after filling up on the bread;). The other choice was a venison sausage and mash with a rich gravy and topped with a crispy fried onion. This was absolutely delicious but I couldn't do it justice after being a little too greedy with the aforementioned bread! A selection of seasonal vegetables were presented separately on the side. The final course was dessert and we were definitely not disappointed. Lemon Posset which came topped with strawberries and served with two shortbread biscuits was the best dish of the entire night. The posset was light and lemony and the biscuits were crumbly and sweet - the nicest shortbread I have ever tasted. It was the perfect combination. The other dessert was "Strawberry Mess" a sort of deconstructed Eton mess. The meringue was not cooked just spread on the plate and toasted covered with chocolate crumbs, served with fresh strawberries and a vanilla ice cream and strawberry sorbet. This dessert was sublime as well, although for me being a lover of lemony desserts, the posset just pipped it. Everything was beautifully presented! The prosecco that came with the meal was light and fruity and a perfect accompaniment. The service was fantastic. Our waiter could not do enough for us and this was apparent in all of the staff we dealt with. Finally I took a trip to the ladies. I think you can tell a lot about a restaurant by looking at the loos. These were fabulous. They were spotless and the soap and hand lotion was luxurious, and the decor was reminiscent of a spa! In short this was one of the best meals I have had in a very long time. If you ever find yourself in Hull definitely take time to come here and I promise you won't regret it.

Mini squid with salt and pepper was tasty but tiny. Nice beer selection which included 2 cask ales. A place for a large party or romantic date, outside seating is now plentiful.

However when we were shown to our table it was opposite the toilets and there was an awful toilet/drain smell. Eventually we became 'nose blind' to this but it is certainly not what I would expect from a place like this. I would also point out that there is no door to seperate the toilets, and from where I sat I could see into the toilets every time the door was opened to either cubicle. I ordered another cocktail and the bar and my husband ordered a beer, he was presented with his immediately, I was told that my cocktail would have to be made at the bar upstairs. I then waited between 20-30 minutes for it to arrive. The food itself was delicious however I am not sure that even this would lure me back. I was contact directly by the Westwood the following week by email and they advised that they would look into the issues I had, needless to say, I have received no response after that. Definitely a memorable dining experience but not for the right reasons.

Punters were chatty and friendly. The assorted real ales are superb. recently they open new rooms upstairs doubling the size but downstairs it is dark and dingy with a snug. Black paintwork and nicotine walls. Black Boy dates back to the 1330s, though the first reference to licenced premises on the site was in 1729. Most now is 17th and 18th century. Ye Olde Black Boy is the definitive genuine traditional Olde English pub and of course it has a ghost. it is a little slave boy (hence the name) who was a servant there before the abolishion. Well worth a look!
