Great for the odd lunch or can cater for larger groups, both of which I've experienced with no problems. Well managed and customer service is top notch. You can tell all the colleagues take pride in what they do and it shows. Can get busy at times, and have had to wait a while for meals on a couple of occasions but we got our drinks for free for the wait - what more could you ask for? Open most days except for Sunday and Monday from noon until late.

The food, the service, the ambience, the decor, and the price - everything was spot on. The restaurant is situated in the Humber Dock, the area around the docklands which has been redeveloped. The area is trendy with pubs and restaurants, a marina full of yachts and motor boats and lots of people walking, jogging or just sitting and watching the world go by. 1884, I found out, has a very good reputation in Hull and it is deservedly so. It also has a reputation for being expensive and if you just take the A la Carte menu then yes you will pay quite a lot but they also have an Evening Market Menu which available every night except for Saturday which offers 3 courses and a glass of fizz for £22 - that to me is exceptional value, especially when you taste the quality of the food. The choice on the evening was limited to two starters, two mains and two desserts. Between two of us we ordered everything on the menu. We were given warm bread to start which was so delicious we had to order more! The starters were a choice of a Ham hock terrine or Mozzarella with tomatoes. The description of either cannot come near to doing justice to just how delicious both of these starters were and how beautifully presented. The main courses were a choice between Hake or venison sausage. The fish came on a bed of champ with a butter sauce, baby shrimps and samphire. It was light and delicious and perfect after filling up on the bread;). The other choice was a venison sausage and mash with a rich gravy and topped with a crispy fried onion. This was absolutely delicious but I couldn't do it justice after being a little too greedy with the aforementioned bread! A selection of seasonal vegetables were presented separately on the side. The final course was dessert and we were definitely not disappointed. Lemon Posset which came topped with strawberries and served with two shortbread biscuits was the best dish of the entire night. The posset was light and lemony and the biscuits were crumbly and sweet - the nicest shortbread I have ever tasted. It was the perfect combination. The other dessert was "Strawberry Mess" a sort of deconstructed Eton mess. The meringue was not cooked just spread on the plate and toasted covered with chocolate crumbs, served with fresh strawberries and a vanilla ice cream and strawberry sorbet. This dessert was sublime as well, although for me being a lover of lemony desserts, the posset just pipped it. Everything was beautifully presented! The prosecco that came with the meal was light and fruity and a perfect accompaniment. The service was fantastic. Our waiter could not do enough for us and this was apparent in all of the staff we dealt with. Finally I took a trip to the ladies. I think you can tell a lot about a restaurant by looking at the loos. These were fabulous. They were spotless and the soap and hand lotion was luxurious, and the decor was reminiscent of a spa! In short this was one of the best meals I have had in a very long time. If you ever find yourself in Hull definitely take time to come here and I promise you won't regret it.

They have offers for a meal and wine during the week and very good prices. The restaurant is fairly newly opened and so can only get better. You can usually get a table at the last minute during non busy times. The pub below featured in the Living TV ghost series with Derek Acorah and is rumoured to be haunted. The building is ancient and has a skull behind the bar which was found in the building. Scary stuff.

Punters were chatty and friendly. The assorted real ales are superb. recently they open new rooms upstairs doubling the size but downstairs it is dark and dingy with a snug. Black paintwork and nicotine walls. Black Boy dates back to the 1330s, though the first reference to licenced premises on the site was in 1729. Most now is 17th and 18th century. Ye Olde Black Boy is the definitive genuine traditional Olde English pub and of course it has a ghost. it is a little slave boy (hence the name) who was a servant there before the abolishion. Well worth a look!

The plotting room is actually where the Civil War began. It was a merchants house..the owner of the arsenal. The decision was made that they wanted to keep the arsenal and not let the King have it. (loss of revenue) so they decided to Close the Beverley Gate (in the town centre) again the King and thus cavaliers and thus it began. If you don't know where this pub is you can miss it. Down an alley the city and modern buildings were built around it.

My brisket was really nicely cooked, and the gravy was good. As it accommodates "evening activities", the interior isn't probably the best, and you could almost feel your feet stick to the floor! Other than that, it was ok. Service was relatively quick and friendly. If you're around the area for some food, give Garbos a try!

But never mind (early booking recommended but if not near the tanks I would suggest you book when one is) the food was fine, had a lot worse, the staff where pleasant and willing to please. The restaurant is for now only open in the evening on Fridays and Saturdays, but it is simply amazing as you will be eating inside a huge aquariums with shoals of fish swimming by you. While you are waiting for the courses to be brought at your table you are encouraged to visit the other exhibits which are just breathtaking. The atmosphere is therefore amazing, the food is terrific too. I had a very tasty starter of Moroccan meatballs, followed by a gargantuan fillet of halibut in a delicious lemongrass sauce. All in all at £70 for two with a bottle of champagne it was excellent value for money, great food and a terrific atmosphere, what an amazing place!
