1884 Dock Street Kitchen - Gourmet (venison) Sausage and Mash and Hake on a bed of champ!

Wow is the first word that comes to mind. This place is fantastic!!!…read more I was brought here by a friend when I was in Hull last week and I cannot speak highly enough about it. The food, the service, the ambience, the decor, and the price - everything was spot on. The restaurant is situated in the Humber Dock, the area around the docklands which has been redeveloped. The area is trendy with pubs and restaurants, a marina full of yachts and motor boats and lots of people walking, jogging or just sitting and watching the world go by. 1884, I found out, has a very good reputation in Hull and it is deservedly so. It also has a reputation for being expensive and if you just take the A la Carte menu then yes you will pay quite a lot but they also have an Evening Market Menu which available every night except for Saturday which offers 3 courses and a glass of fizz for £22 - that to me is exceptional value, especially when you taste the quality of the food. The choice on the evening was limited to two starters, two mains and two desserts. Between two of us we ordered everything on the menu. We were given warm bread to start which was so delicious we had to order more! The starters were a choice of a Ham hock terrine or Mozzarella with tomatoes. The description of either cannot come near to doing justice to just how delicious both of these starters were and how beautifully presented. The main courses were a choice between Hake or venison sausage. The fish came on a bed of champ with a butter sauce, baby shrimps and samphire. It was light and delicious and perfect after filling up on the bread;). The other choice was a venison sausage and mash with a rich gravy and topped with a crispy fried onion. This was absolutely delicious but I couldn't do it justice after being a little too greedy with the aforementioned bread! A selection of seasonal vegetables were presented separately on the side. The final course was dessert and we were definitely not disappointed. Lemon Posset which came topped with strawberries and served with two shortbread biscuits was the best dish of the entire night. The posset was light and lemony and the biscuits were crumbly and sweet - the nicest shortbread I have ever tasted. It was the perfect combination. The other dessert was "Strawberry Mess" a sort of deconstructed Eton mess. The meringue was not cooked just spread on the plate and toasted covered with chocolate crumbs, served with fresh strawberries and a vanilla ice cream and strawberry sorbet. This dessert was sublime as well, although for me being a lover of lemony desserts, the posset just pipped it. Everything was beautifully presented! The prosecco that came with the meal was light and fruity and a perfect accompaniment. The service was fantastic. Our waiter could not do enough for us and this was apparent in all of the staff we dealt with. Finally I took a trip to the ladies. I think you can tell a lot about a restaurant by looking at the loos. These were fabulous. They were spotless and the soap and hand lotion was luxurious, and the decor was reminiscent of a spa! In short this was one of the best meals I have had in a very long time. If you ever find yourself in Hull definitely take time to come here and I promise you won't regret it.

Food is excellent, service is excellent. Price is a little high but the atmosphere was beautiful…read moreand so what the interior! Juicy and tender steak.. but that's what you expect when you spend £70 on a steak!

LED lights and black\chrome fittings are not my thing - I prefer the old back street curry house place. Having said all that you will notice the 4 stars, the reason for that is very good food and great service. Yes it was a tuesday night, yes there was perhaps 5 other tables taken but I think you can tell when a place cares about its customers and wants to see those customers become regulars. Quick pint at the bar and explanation that one of the guys in our group hadnt had Indian food much so would want a very mild meal. We had usual papad and dips - OK Chicken and Lamb tikka, Dhall soup - very good. Chicken Ceylon (madras style but with more coconut and lots of black pepper) Chicken Passada ( for the newbie) Chicken Rogan 3 rice 2 Naan - 1 stuffed paratha Channa massala , Saag Aloo 6 pints 3 large brandies All very good, plenty of meat, all tasted fresh. Service was great - including ordering a cab for us. Total bill came out at £120 with tip. I thought good value. There are loads of curry houses in Hull but if you are in this area and dont have one recomended to you then you could do a lot worse than the Raj Pavilion.

Feeling emotionally and physically destroyed after my recent visit to Yinjibar…read more First red flag, the water tasted atrocious. After we ordered they brought us plates and a bowl of what I believe were very sad clouds. The entrees came before the starter. For entrée I ordered the roast duck which arrived partially submerged in a puddle of oily water. My m8 ordered fried rice which came with a number of unidentifiable pieces of flesh on top. I won't dignify it with the title of "meat". Also they brought a random half head of cabbage. Finally our starter arrived, the crispy lamb which was more concerningly crispy than deliciously crispy. Was certainly not typically used pieces of a lamb. I may not survive the night. Pray for my memory. Do not eat at Yinjibar.

You may be put off by it's small size (although I think they have extended now), unassuming exterior and low key decor, but I strongly recommend everyone to try this place. Fantastic food at the most unbelievable prices. They do huge bowls of noodles with seafood, meats or wantons etc for about £5, have a great range of dim sum and also do sushi. As well as a small selection of the usual Chinese dishes. I have tried their seabass with chillies and it was amazing, by far the best authentic Chinese food I've found in Hull. The fact that the majority of clientele are Chinese is a testament to it's authenticity.

On this occasion, I had a mozzarella and rocket starter. Would have been better if the plate wasn't covered rocket and had more mozzarella/tomato. For main I had a 'special' pizza, which has salami and prosciutto ham. there was a decent amount of ham but the salami was thin on the ground. When I came to the desserts, I avoided the dessert platter so share like the plague! after our last visit and ordering the afore mentioned dessert, you can't help but feel ripped off! there is barely more on the sharing platter then there was on the dessert plate of someone who had ordered a single portion. The restaurant is nice and clean and has quite a fresh look. The staff are nice but there is one person there, who I'm assuming is a manger of some description as they're in normal clothing, who is over the top with the niceties! to the point that its irritating! generally though, the staff are good and helpful. We have a tastecard so we got bogof on all courses which made the price reasonable. without the tastecard, I personally wouldn't want to go as I feel its over priced. our reservation was for a group of 5 and our waitress had no problem in accepting 2 tastecards for our party and splitting the bill into two. some places can be a bit funny about this.
