This location is inside the Princes Quay Shopping Centre, in the city centre of Hull, the mall has so much potential being along the river, but it's a dire and run-down mess and this is one of the few places left. You enter the restaurant through the steps within the mall, there is also a lift, but it looks in rough condition like it hadn't been used in a long time. While the mall officially shuts at 5:30 p.m., the restaurant does stay open later for dinner service closing at 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and opening an hour later on Friday and Saturday evenings. These opening hours are reasonable for a mall location, but obviously, they do close earlier than most Pizza Express across the country, so plan ahead. PRO TIP: Be sure to take advantage of their Pizza Express Club loyalty scheme on their app, after just a couple of visits you can get a bunch of freebies to make your trip more affordable. Without these offers, it can be a little pricey however once you unlock the gold tier you're able to get bonuses such as a free soft drink, bottled water, dough balls, coffee and Dolcetti and the list continues. The overall interior is large, and I really liked how they had views of the river, I was given a window seat, so the view was really pretty, and it almost felt like I'd left England and was in a much more exotic country. Other than the windows, the interior was definitely in need of a refurb compared to the newer Pizza Express stores, and the seats were so uncomfortable. For my food, I decided to try the gluten-free Pollo Fiesta pizza, which had recently launched on the menu. I originally tried to order one of my favourite pizzas, the Pollo Forza, but as this was recently removed from the menu, I had to opt for something else. I was a little annoyed that the waitress wouldn't let me order it anyway, as they had everything to make the pizza other than the peppers which could have been substituted (Other Pizza Express stores have offered to do this for me). The waitress was friendly enough and had decent menu knowledge apart from this. My pizza looked great but the taste was so-so, the sour cream might look aesthetically pleasing drizzled on the pizza, but I just didn't like the flavour combination, and in parts, it was way too thick and I had to scrape it off. The chicken was tasty though. The mixed peppers were way too long and thick, again, not great for a pizza... so I had to take them off as well. I also ordered some gluten-free dough balls to go alongside the mains, these were fine, but the portion of garlic butter was stingy, and part of the garlic hadn't been crushed correctly. Not the best Pizza Express, pretty bog standard chain Italian, again this place has so much potential if they can work on sprucing up the interior with comfier chairs, and actually promoting the view more. 3*

Pizza Express was founded in the 1960's with one humble restaurant near Museum Street, London, WC2. They aimed to offer good, wholesome, authentic Italian-style pizza and they have done. Plus, you only have to look on the Pizza Express website to have a look at their extensive menu and even book a table. Your taste buds are primed before walking in the door, because the aroma of freshly cooked pizza wafts up the steps to the shopping centre and throughout the outdoor seating area. To compare Pizza Express with Pizza Hut would be like comparing McDonald's to a Steak House. The Express menu is traditional Italian GOURMET Pizzas, is how it was described to me and certainly they were superb. Not that doughy, mass produced, stodgy and heavily artificial pap you tend to get in the 'Hut?' Originally on my first couple of visits here there were problems with the service. Waiting an hour for a vegetarian pizza, then having one brought to us covered in chicken and then subsequent mix-ups over desserts on more than one occasion had me feeling a bit concerned. But I powered through it and have been back a couple of times since with a much-improved level of service. The pizzas have wonderful charred, thin, soft, chewy crust of yum and they are not overwhelmed by toppings! I tend to go for the Giardiniera (Asparagus, artichokes, mushrooms, red peppers, santos tomatoes, olives, garlic oil, tomato & pesto base) pizza, but recently had the Padana (Goats' cheese, spinach, red & caramelised onions, garlic oil). It's like a party in your mouth! With goat's cheese! And onions! And spinach. And dough. It's a weird party, I won't deny that. If you can believe it, I didn't actually plan for us to eat dessert out after dinner until my friends suggested it. Yes, someone else had to implant the idea into my head of mobbing a sugar-laden eatery post-pizza coma. They have a selection on Dolcetti (mini-puddings that come with a selection of coffees) and the chocolate fudge cake is pretty scrumptious! I would highly recommend Pizza Express for someone looking for a good pizza or pasta. The menu lists plenty of family-pleasing options and they take the Taste card!

I had booked a table in advance (as is required when using a Tastecard), but I was stood at the door by the restaurant for a good 5 minutes and wasn't acknowledge. I ended up stopping a member of staff that was just about to walk past me, to let them know that our party had arrived. We we're taken to our table and given menus to look over. About 15 minutes had past and everyone had made up their mind what they wanted, so a colleague informed the member of staff that had shown us to our table. She asked if we minded waiting a little longer as the kitchen don't like it when they put too many orders through in such a short space of time! We agreed for the time being but it was another 15 minutes before our orders were taken! The starters took 20 minutes to arrive, so we had been sat at our table for 50 minutes before we even got anything to eat. As for the food, it was nice, and always has been everytime I've visited. I had the Garlic Bread with tomato and pesto for starters and it filled a whole pizza tray. For mains I had the meatballs which were really nice and meaty with a good taste. The sauce had chillis in, but it wasn't too hot. I don't like hot or spicy foods but this wasn't too hot for me. I would certainly have it again! There was a good choice of desserts available and all of them were nicely presented. On the whole it is a nice, modern restaurant with good food, just let down by the really slow service at the start of the night
