Thankfully we happened on Cosa Nostra, a large multilevelled Italian restaurant on Church Street and they had a table free! Shown to the upper levels of the restaurant, it was a good place to relax away from the hustle and bustle on a busy May evening. The menu had a decent variety of traditional and more unusual dishes from pizza to pasta, fish dishes to calzone. Not feeling at our most ravenous, we opted for two standard dishes, linguini carbonara and linguini ragu, washed down with a pint of draught Peroni, accompanied by some garlic bread. When the dishes arrived, wow, the portions are enormous at this place! Two large bowls of pasta and a generous pizza sized portion of thin crust garlic bread. The carbonara was spot on, the creaminess of the sauce contrasted perfectly with the saltiness of the bacon, the garlic bread heavy on the garlic, as it should be and the ragu full of earthy tomato flavours. Gamely though we tried, we couldn't finish any of the components, as we both were just recovering from a cold. The head waiter was so concerned with our lack of progress, he offered to pack us up a doggy bag! Reassuring him the food was spot on, we vowed to return when our appetites renewed.

The meats were a little oily, but I understand that is the traditional way, and the bruschetta was to die for. When mixed together in one mouthful it was an explosion of taste... Juicy fresh tomatoes, the bite of garlic, the crunch of bruschetta and the smooth texture of the meat. Excellent starter, highly recommended. For my main I had a dish off of the specials board which was filet steak, in peppercorn sauce, with potatoes and vegetables. The vegetable came to share with the other guest on the table and it included Brussels, green beans, carrots and onions (unfortunately I didn't get a picture quick enough). The steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare and the texture melted in my mouth like every good steak should. 100% perfect. The peppercorn sauce was creamy and also had the perfect bite of pepper. The potatoes were roasted to perfection. Also, a delicious bottle of wine, served very professionally topped off the whole meal. We had a party of 3 and everyone had a starter, a main and we ordered two beers and a bottle of wine. The total was £80 and it was worth every penny. The only downside was the noise as the walls bounced it off from every direction with the room being an open space. But you can't complain too much because it's expected for such a popular restaurant, and good on them to fill up with so many people. I hear every night is extremely full and we have previously tried to walk in another time to find that they had no tables available unless we waited quite a while. Had a nice meal every time & staff are very attentive but not over bearing at all, hence why return. It's little close to the main road but that doesn't detract from the warm atmosphere. Car park is pretty small so do expect to get in, plenty of parking within walking distance.
