Critter Care Veterinary Clinic (CCVC) is not child friendly. The front staff is not up to par with the reception staff at regular (human) doctor clinics/offices (i.e. professionalism, friendliness, helpfulness, and willingness to provide a positive customer experience) particularly Brooke. This clinic makes no exceptions for any extraordinary situation like the one I was in yesterday, 7/11. Since March 2013, I was a patron of CCVC. Over the years, I took nine (9) pets (3 of which were "re-homed") and an injured momma possum that caused a traffic jam on E. Del Mar boulevard. My earliest memories of Dr. Leyendecker were at the, now retired, Dr. Spruell's clinic on Clark Boulevard in the early 2000s. Yesterday's (7/11/23) experience ended this long term relationship with CCVC. It's a triple digit summer, I'm a single parent with a young son, and I have two (2) rescued puppy GSDs' whose appointment I rescheduled two (2) weeks prior to yesterday. I also have no childcare past 13:00 hrs when summer camp ends. As an only child, I have no relatives or surviving parents or ex-in-laws to babysit my child. With the exception of yesterday, I never forgot the "no children under 18" rule that was implemented around the pandemic and exists post pandemic. I usually run errands when my son is at school. Being that my son wanted a puppy, I wanted him to help me with some tasks incumbent upon dog ownership - one of which is veterinary care. Even if I forgot the rule, CCVC offers curbside. However, yesterday en route to our appointment, the puppies urinated and defecated Gerber-like consistent diarrhea. My son was retching at the smell and sight of diarrhea on the cars passenger floorboards'. The smell was horrendous. We took the rubber mats out, rolled our windows down, and proceeded to our appointment. We checked in and sat down in the well ventilated office only to told by Brooke that my minor was not allowed in the office and we had to either wait in our car or sit outside. Being how bad the smell was, we would have to sit with our windows down in the car exposed to the heat. I explained our situation to Brooke, and she brought Dr. Leyendecker out. Dr. Leyndecker gave us those two (2) options as well. I told her what happened in the vehicle, and asked if she could kennel the dogs. Her response was "no". It was either "wait outside or wait in your car. I'll try and get you in as fast as I can." No exceptions for extraordinary circumstances. Despite the SMS heat advisory detailing the heat indexes reaching 112-114 degrees, these were our only two (2) options. Our dogs *really* needed to see the vet. I grabbed two (2) chairs and waited outside. I cannot understand how a veterinarian would tell us to take our dogs out in this weather nonetheless a 6 year old child. She had advised me a year ago that dogs' can have a heat stroke with only 3 minutes exposure to the heat. These options were inhumane not only for the dogs but for a child. We waited, we knew it was important for the dogs to see the vet. But now I'm left with questions: Why couldn't an exception be made? Why couldn't the dogs (with prior history @ CCVC) be in put in a kennel where dogs are boarded for the 15-20 minutes we waited outside? Why couldn't we just be given a room to wait in so that my son nor dogs be in the triple digit heat? Where is the humanity? The dogs needed to be at the vet; there's a high volume of bookings such that we waited 2 weeks for this appointment and 2 weeks before for the rescheduled appointment. My son began sweating and the dogs' panting excessively and two (2) employees came for our two (2) GSDs. We took off in the car to hose the entire rear bench seats', the rubber mats', and the entire rear floor board. Needless to say, I woke up this morning bothered by the handling of the matter. I called today (7/12) and asked Brooke to provide me with my six (6) pets records' as I would no longer consider being a client of CCVC. There was no friendliness or apology. There wasn't a "we'd hate to see you leave after a decade of veterinary care, let us make this right". Nothing. I feel silly for ever feeling that every pet (aka patient) I ever brought in mattered. I feel like any relationship I felt with this clinic was false or invalid. I've waited 3+ hours with an appointment. I've followed advices, follow ups, dog food recommendations, and a veterinary referral to BluePearl in San Antonio. I've defended this clinic from a neighbor USBP employee that claimed their dogs or horses died at CCVC during spade/neutering as a consequence of other anesthetizing. After 10 years, I am left with the feeling no dog owner nor parent should feel by any doctor - being treated inhumanely.

Our family dog began having seizures, and Saturday night we drove her to SA to get treated (since there's no night vets in Laredo). Sunday, after the care she received in SA, she started to feel better and was stable, so we drove back home to Laredo. Monday morning she suffered one seizure, so we took her to Critter Care that same afternoon. Dr. Leyendecker ordered a liver panel test, as she suspected possible complications. Knowing that our dog's liver was potentially in distress, she still chose to inject her with vaccine booster shots. Immediately after coming home following these shots, our baby began suffering unstoppable and horrific convulsions. There is a large amount of research that shows that sick dogs shouldn't be vaccinated. Tuesday we were called to come back, and the liver test confirmed that her liver enzymes were through the roof. I waited hours to meet with our vet because I had multiple questions, but when Dr. Leyendecker finally met with me, she said, "Let's make this quick, I have a surgery." She was rude, in a hurry, and dismissive to the questions I had. She rushed me out of the exam room and did not make time to help us understand why our dog was getting worse. Wednesday morning, our baby died in my arms. The drastic and horrible change occurred after vaccination of a sick and weak dog. "Unfortunately, as parents we were working and couldn't be available--we would never have consented to allowing our sick pet to be vaccinated. We post this to warn others to think twice about vaccinating a sick pet. And to express our family's crushing devastation that the actions of our vet probably led to the death of our baby." - Antonio and Jackie V

    Our precious Gophie!

I want to give a great big shoutout to Dr.Sandra Leyendecker and her amazing staff, my late husbands fur baby started having problems during the night I contacted the Dr before she was even open and she told me she would be in clinic shortly and would check his medical record to see what he had going in( he had some problems similar quite sometime back. I was not able to take him my self due to working so my daughter gratefully took him in. Lab work and X-rays were needed to determine what we were facing. Now mind you our Gopher is getting there there in years and is now no longer at home. He does great getting around as he is very familiar with his home environment. I was really worried and was up most of the night crying. I just could not loose this precious fur baby my husband had left for me to care for and for him to keep me company and give me comfort. Lab work and X-rays come back that Gophie is in great health even his heart! As I said before he is getting up there in years and we now know that he has arthritis but that he can live a very comfortable life with a little pain medicine as needed. I am so grateful for the kind loving care that Dr.Leyendecker ndecker and her staff always give us and our babies. If you find yourself looking for an amazing veterinary clinic with great Doctors and staff this is you go to place!

Dr. Linedecker butchered our dog's ear crop. We provided photographs of what we wanted and physically (in person) advised her on what we wanted. The day of the surgery we were called about a time change and when we asked about it, were told to go ahead and drop our dog off. She gave our dog the shortest and unnatural-looking cut (similiar to pitbull). We voiced our concern to the staff and to our surprise and horror, no one from that business has even talked about it to us. I was skeptical of her from our initial appointment due to her rudeness when I asked for more information and clarification. Again, IT HAS BEEN OVER A YEAR AND NO ONE FROM THIS FACILITY (INCLUDING DR. LINEDECKER) HAS CONTACTED US ABOUT THIS OR EVEN APOLOGIZED. I already felt bad for allowing this procedure and for the surgery to come out the way that it did....I have felt horrible and continue to feel horrible about the entire ordeal. I feel bad for our pet, guilty, and was depressed for a long time afterward.

this my dog princess just to add her picture she'd a cowboys fan thank you for your service's

While growing up my family began taking our pets to the Laredo Animal Clinic; I've had several pets since the first visit and have had both not so good and excellent experiences which is why I can understand the frustration and need for previous dog owners to voice out their experiences. But at the same time have you ever noticed how most of the time as people we tend to comment when it's bad but not every single time someone did a good job? I will share my thoughts based on past and current time interactions. We had a sour experience well over 14 years ago (had gotten or dog fixed so she couldn't have puppies and we did so before a holiday long weekend to be able to give her that extra care). When we were there to pick her up we asked if she could be given something to calm her down to sedate her a bit so she wouldn't open her stitches. At the time Dr Kramer told us something to the effect of not to worry the dog would instinctively know not to be jumping up and down (no sedatives were prescribed as for the dog would just know it couldn't move much and would take it easy). Now in retrospect Dr Kramer should probably have sent her with some mild sedative just as a precaution because while she's the vet and I'm sure most pets have great instincts and in fact know not to move because they were just opened up , however she didn't listen to the concerns of pet owners who spent more time with that specific pet and not assume the dog would behave. Long story short the pet that would instinctively know to take it easy did run around and jump up and down at some point opened up her stitch and her gut was sticking out just a little ( no she did not die we were able to put her gut back inside her belly kept an eye on her and gave her some Benadryl to mellow her out and took her to a different vet after the holiday weekend and got re stitched). So while that was a bit of a nightmare and we tried other vet for a while I say for a while because when you're lucky enough that your pet is healthy you really only visit your pet's vet office maybe once or twice a year if anything but not only was it far away from us making it less convenient but the vet retired so when choosing a new vet we ended up going back to the Laredo Animal clinic since there are multiple vets at the Clinic just preferred not to be seen by the previous vet since that was really the only bad experience we ever had there. My oldest at the moment is 14 years , younger brother is about 12 years (I got him when he was about 2-3years old) and a young sister aprox 4 months ; all have been a patients at Laredo Animal Clinic since Ive had them; And while I understand everyone speaks based on their experiences I know my pets are well taken care for. First of all we were lucky enough that Dr Alexander at an early stage suspected my oldest possibly had a tumor which could be something but not necessarily started taking meds and when that didn't work as well as he had hoped referred us to an oncologist in San Antonio it was indeed cancer he had surgery but sadly it came back due to the type of cancer he has. I take him about 3 times a week for fluids and the staff and everyone makes him feel like a celebrity. My dog got very sick one day that he had to be carried on a stretcher and we were getting ready for the worst but thankfully he made an amazing recovery from not being able to walk (lack of balance) which btw we were told to heal it could be a couple of weeks to a couple of months or it could just sadly never fully go away. I don't recall the exact medical condition but I suppose the easiest way to explain would be the equivalent to a stroke. We stopped taking him for fluids as much because while fluids are very important to be kept in check to get him to the car was not the easiest thing to do since he is a big kid weighing 70-80lbs and again since he had no control of his movements due to lack of coordination it wasn't as simple as just holding him up to assist him it was a carry and also fight against his movement because he tried walking but made it harder for me to carry because I had to make sure he didn't bang his head or anything so I took him maybe one or two times a week after the incident and he started walking with less assistance about a week later he began to walk as if nothing had happened. My dog is 14 years of age and even with cancer we know in big part it's thanks to the medicine and treatment that he has gotten. And sure having a pet is not cheap but a pet is family . So while I'm sorry to hear some people have not had good experience and urge you not to go; I am absolutely glad I take my pets to the Laredo Animal Clinic because after just one sour one experience which is ancient history since it's not even the same vets my pets have had nothing less than amazing treatment.

Although he did so in a light-hearted manner, I took his words seriously. Two weeks later, I noticed that my cat had become lethargic and refused to eat. While this was concerning, I did not seek immediate medical attention. However, as the weeks passed, my once plump and affectionate cat lost weight, her strength diminished, and her overall demeanor changed. Her eyes began to appear yellow, prompting me to seek medical assistance. Although I should have consulted a reputable veterinarian, I returned to the same clinic. Upon entering the room, the veterinarian immediately noticed the cat's condition and remarked, "She doesn't look good." I responded with a simple "No, s**T Sherlock." He proceeded to take the cat for a blood panel and informed me that she was dying due to a punctured spleen. A punctured spleen that HE CAUSED WHEN HE SPAYED HER. IT WAS HIS FAULT. The veterinarian explained that he could attempt to save her, but the cost would exceed $2,000, and even with the surgery, her chances of survival were minimal. He gave me five minutes to make a decision. When he returned, I politely requested that he leave the room. Deciding the fate of a beloved and cherished pet is one of the most challenging decisions I have ever faced. I observed my cat's suffering and realized that financial constraints were a significant factor in my decision. We have one college student, two high school students, numerous bills, and the ongoing economic challenges. I digress. The vet and his tech walked back int the room to ask what my decision was and, through sobs, I told him that I was going to have to let him euthanize her. Everything felt like it was going in slow motion. I don't remember if the tech or the vet went to the back and came back in with the syringe. I kissed her, hugged her and little head was dripping because of my tears. They asked me if I was ready and I was not nice when I replied....but I did give my consent. They administered the drug and within seconds she was gone. My little girl lay there lifeless with her eyes still partially open and her mouth agape. I will NEVER RECOMMEND Dr. Santos to anyone who asks. HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR my cat's illness and i HAD TO PAY HIM TO KILL HER. RUN FAR FROM THIS MAN.
