Chicken Salad with chicken, dill pickle chips and their special sauce
Mary C.

Well, I stumbled upon this little chicken place tucked around the end of a shopping mall here in Springield, VA. I am definitely a fan of spicy chicken. This restaurant specializes in Nashville Hot Chicken. I wanted to keep calories down by not doing a sandwich. They offer a delicious salad topped with plenty of chicken on a bed of tangy coleslaw and pickles and their special sauce. It was amazing! This is a surefire winner. Their chicken was flavorful and fresh. The spicy chicken was offset by the sweet and tangy slaw. Loving dill pickles, you had me at chicken matched with pickles. The lady at the register was very helpful with their menu! She genuinely cared. The restaurant was very very clean including the chairs, tables, counter seating and the restroom. I love an I there hot chicken establishment but their salad isn't even close. I want this one again and again. Wish it was closer!

The chicken slider was okay, but i ended up with food poisoning about 3hrs after eating it. Be cautious when ordering from this place!

When most new Nashville Hot places douse the chicken with sauce, Crimson Coward uses a dry rub which is vastly superior!

The crimson sauce is similar to the Raising Canes sauce but with a little bit more of a kick.

It sits right across the street from one of my top 5 favorite fried chicken shops, Nash & Smashed. They have some decent competition - That's what I thought before I stopped in. I am very thankful to the Crimson Coward chain for offering a $5 discounted meal for first-time visitors! I ordered the 4 piece tenders, in country style (no heat). My body seems to be that of a crybaby when it comes to handling spice. I ordered the food just after they opened, at 11:06, thru their online storefront (website). I arrived to pick up the food at around 11:20. They were just packaging it up to go out the door, and I was the only one in the restaurant. I'm sure if there was a line or quite a few more orders it would have taken longer. The food was packed in a small folding box (just like KFC style), but contained no napkins - so be sure to grab those before you go! The chicken was moist, tender, and juicy! The breading was thin, yet slightly crunchy. It seems that they make this perfectly! My compliments to the crew. It was done very well. The tenders were as big as my hands, and just as thick! They were quite large! I'm not sure I've ever seen tenders quite so big, that weren't 50+% breading alone. But no - these were genuinely large - They must have been the beast of a chicken yard. Tender. Juicy. Perfection. You get 4 slices of pickle with the meal, and for a pickle-lover like me that was great! They're not terrible high-class tasting, like a Claussen-brand pickle, and have a hint of bread-n-butter taste to them, but they're decent! But, the reason for the score being as it is, is because the flavor profile didn't fit to the fireworks sparkle that hit the chicken towards a home run. The seasoning landed a bit short, and flat. I was expecting a myriad of blended herbs and spices to match the exquisite look and tenderness of the chicken - but it never came. I couldn't tell you what herb or spice it was that felt so strongly, but there was one element in the spice package that dominated everything else, and just fills the nose and mouth with that one flavor over all else. It's not a bad taste by any means. It was quite enjoyable as-is, but it's nothing overtly special to write back home about. I wouldn't travel from far just to get this chicken. One other thing that bothered me was that they seemed to offer mac & cheese with other things mixed in but yet not the mac & cheese by itself on the side. Yet, you can get slaw, onions, pickles, and all these other condiments and flavors by themselves - just not mac & cheese alone. Sad! A terribly missed profit-maker for sure... If there's one thing people want with good fried chicken it's mac & cheese! I believe that's written in soul food lore somewhere... Lastly, the sauces that came with the food -- You can pick your own, and by default I went with the Crimson Sauce, and ranch. The ranch fell a bit flat. It's not an expensive or savory ranch; it's just a bottom of the barrel 2D ranch. No eccentric savory flavors, or myriad of tastes. There was clearly no buttermilk in it either, it just felt a bit sad. That's not to say it wasn't good, but it left me longing for a bit more. The Crimson sauce was good. It had a tiny bit of heat -- similar to something like your average green peppers, or mildly spicy fresh-made salsa would give off. Something your old-school no-spice white granny could order and eat with no complaining. The sauce was good and flavorful. Between the 4 tenders, 1 cup of ranch, and 1 cup of crimson sauce, I finished my meal just as the sauce cups were being wiped empty with the last bit of chicken meat. A refreshing and enjoyable experience, but nothing to drive out of your way for. I enjoyed the meal, and would come back - but I wouldn't go craving it once a week for the rest of my life. Good for a passing meal when you're sick of eating the same ol' Taco Bell, KFC, Chipotle, or McDonald's meals, and want to change it up a bit.

There was one other patron eating in. I placed a take-away order of half coward, I.e., 6 wings. I ordered them naked. Don't judge! I don't fry foods at home. They had different genres of music playing. Careless Whisper was playing during my visit. I love that song! They cook to order so that's always a good sign. And he says we have to eat here for best experience! He is right. Ordering is easy on the kiosk or an employee can help take your order up front. A large menu board shows you the options. We got two 3 tender meal combo (fries & drink) and a slaw. It took about 10 minutes to get our food but it's made to order. They kitchen/cooking/prep area is open so you can see them make it! Breading and frying the chicken & fries. Hot and fresh. They also check the temp of tenders for doneness. They dip the chicken, then they dust it. Comes with their Crimson sauce as well as ranch. The chicken was hot & juicy. The hot was spicy. Fries were hot and crispy. Ranch was good. Sauce was good. Only negatives were the pickles could have been thicker cut and fresher as well as the slaw. Slaw was vinegar based and wilted. Crunch & crispiness wasn't present. Food was on par with Daves and Canes. Maybe better in quality and price. I wished slaw came with meal. They played country music over the speakers so that's a big plus for me. Is it as good as Dave's or Cane's? My son says yes. I say maybe?
