I believe I was refused service because I am a woman and I give the appearance of not being politically conservative. I went here this afternoon to pick up a stun gun just because they were closest geographically. The store clerk took me to the stun guns, then said "you know you need a firearms card to buy this, right? You got one?" I told him I didn't, and that I had read all the literature on NJ stun gun laws, and nothing I read said a firearms card is required. The store clerk just chuckled, smirked, and said "Welp! . . ." He seemed self-satisfied as he grunted this at me. He answered a question my boyfriend had about bows, and we left. I had been preparing to make this purchase for about a week and had educated myself on everything I needed to know prior to purchasing - so I was fairly sure this dude was wrong about the need for a firearms card. I called the next store on my list (in Woodbridge), and their salesman confirmed I did not need a firearms card to purchase, only a driver license. Within 30 minutes, I was in Woodbridge with a brand new stun gun in my purse, no firearms card needed. If the firearms card requirement is specific to this store - ok, cool. Then why didn't the store clerk say "you know *we require* a firearms card to buy this, right?" Or when I explained that I didn't think there was a firearms card requirement in NJ, why didn't the store clerk say "Oh, that's just our store policy"? And why did he have nothing but chuckles, smirks, and grunts for me when I explained my (correct) understanding of New Jersey law? Such a bizarre way to interact with people, let alone your customers. Why not just grow a pair and learn to say the sentence "I'm refusing service to you, please leave" instead of being a coward and hiding behind a made-up firearms card requirement. This store clerk clearly intended to prevent me from purchasing a stun gun, and he lied in order to do it. That's fine - they're allowed to refuse service to anyone. And I'm allowed to flame them on review sites for (likely) being misogynists who are actively trying to prevent the women of their community from reasonably obtaining self-defense tools. And let's be honest, the verdict is in on how they treat people of color, based on a shamefully high number of reviews on Google that mention it. A bit of context as a side note: My boyfriend and I are a younger interracial couple. I am a small white woman who was in collegiate sweats and a septum piercing. We were pretty different from everyone else in the store, which seemed to draw glances from most eyes. I wish I had looked at the reviews before driving to this place; I never would have even gone to a place with so many accusations of bigotry in their reviews. At the end of the day, I'm glad I was able to patronize a different store with a diverse, honest, and neighborly staff. * Upon reading Google reviews, it seems like the man I refer to above ^ as "the store clerk" might be the owner/manager.
