This was one of our favorite tea places when the former owner, Sally, was running the show. Sadly, the quality of food, particularly the taste of the scones and sandwiches, has deteriorated significantly. Sally also used to give a variety of small pastries along with the scones and the clotted crème. All these were missing while the price went up. Still, I give them three stars given the overall charm of the place, the variety of teas offered, and the nostalgia of a tea room we once loved so much. I have frequented this tea house a half dozen times, at least, mostly before they changed owners. The ambience is quaint, the Plains is a cute, very tiny town , and this place could be great, not just meh. They have done a very good job in advertising and social media posts. However, we go there for the food and the tea. Tea selections are phenomenal. They don't charge for extra hot water and they're wonderful. I have no problem at all with the service, especially when you have a reservation. Servers were professional and polite. My biggest gripe is with the scones , which should be the star of the show. The ones I had recently were cloggy and dense, more like undercooked bread than a true scone. They used to have very, very good scones. They were crumbly and sweet and like a proper English scone. These are not very good at all. Also, there was no clotted cream. There was no jam. The sandwiches were kind of ordinary and sparsely filled. Other than the sandwiches and a scone, there was some fresh fruit and tiny little chocolate chip store-bought cookies and a flavorless sad slice of banana bread. It was not a $50 with tax and tip kind of tea in my opinion. You have a tea house --make fresh food. I don't pay $50 for a tea with store-bought food. Make your own scones and most importantly, perfect a good recipe, have clotted cream, make sandwiches to remember not go uneaten. You are a tea house, act like one. read more

My family and I travel to the Crest Hill Tea Room twice a year for their afternoon tea experience. There aren't a plethora of afternoon tea establishments in Northern VA. - (The Ritz Carlton is another option with a higher price point.) The servers and owners are always polite and accommodating. Service is usually slow whether they are busy or not. The prices increase yearly and the portions served appear to be getting smaller as well. There are a ton of tea flavors there and they let you smell them all before ordering. The tea lived up to the billing and was mighty tasty - although only about 2-3 cups in each teapot (I feel like it should have been 4-5). The scones were uniformly delicious (my fave was the birthday cake scone), while the sandwiches were just OK. The bread on each sandwich overwhelmed the fillings/meat, so I just didn't get a ton of flavor. The service left a bit to be desired. We kept getting different servers, and that seemed to result in some confusion (i.e., being asked multiple times what we ordered, and food and tea coming out at different times). They missed an order completely, and the service was slow. They then asked us to leave as they needed to sit the next large group. No problem there as it clearly stated that the tea service had a time limit, but the only reason we hit it was because of the slow service and the need to fix orders (i.e., one whole person's tea service didn't come out with everyone else's). I found this place on Yelp when searching up tea rooms in the DMV area. It was about an hour drive, but I almost would like to "gate keep" this place because it was such a gem! I made a reservation on their website and drove over to Plains, VA with a friend. There is plenty of street parking the the street is lined with different shops and restaurants. When we arrived at 12:30 PM, the restaurant was packed with our reserved table being the only one open! It's a fairly small place but it was cozy enough to get around and get seated. All items in the shop are up for sale and they carry unique antiques and seasonal items. We opted for the High Tea which comes with a variety of sandwiches, cookies, scones and a choice of tea/beverage. For the teas, we were able to smell the different varieties and I chose Mother of Pearl which had notes of strawberry and peach. They brought out a full tea pot and we has a strainer that kept the tea leaves from falling into the cup. The food was more than enough for both of us. The Crest Hill Tea Room offers a variety of dining options including a monthly themed tea, a proper High Tea with soup or salad and other more filling dishes, a Traditional Afternoon Tea and a Cream Tea. For those who don't want tea there are sandwiches, salads and soup options, plus children's menu options. We opted for the Cream Tea for 2, which was plenty of food for a light lunch for 2 people and is served up with bottomless tea. There are so many tea options I can't remember them all! You also have a choice of scone, so we tried the blueberry white chocolate scone and the Irish cream scone. Both were delicious! Airy and tender and served up warm with a side of cream (you also have the option of jam or curd but you must ask for it). There was also a warm apple tart, cream puffs, cheesecake, banana bread with chocolate chips, macarons, cookies and fresh fruit (grapes, blueberries, orange slices). Everything was incredibly tasty. They were setting up for a large birthday party as we were finishing so servers were distracted. Otherwise, service throughout was very good. It's a small place, so I would recommend making reservations in advance on their website (no pre-payment required) to be sure you can get a table. We came here for a Christmas themed afternoon tea and the whole experience was great! The tea room is located in The Plains so it was a bit of a drive but totally worth it. They don't have a parking lot but there was plenty of street parking around. The tea room is in a small building with a ton of character. We chose to do the afternoon tea, but they have a whole menu you can order from. They have a whole selection of teas to choose from, I went with the White Christmas and it was delicious. You get to choose a soup or salad, I got the salad and it had gingerbread mozzarella on it. You also get to choose a scone and they bring some clotted cream. Then you get a selection of finger sandwiches and desserts. All of the food was really good, and they brought the Christmas theme into all the items. You also can't beat the price, it was $39.99 per person. The serve was also very well paced and they never rushed us. We tried the Sally's Blend and the Valentines special Chocolate and Roses. Both were very good! They also have the teas to purchase if you'd like to bring some home. We also got a tower. The towers come with an assortment of cookies, some fruit, a choice of scone, and tea sandwiches. The butterscotch scone was delicious. Something I really appreciated about this place is that they are very accommodating to dietary restrictions. They have special items for those who are gluten free, vegetarian, or vegan. However, on our visit they kindly swapped out some of the sandwiches that were not vegetarian with ones that were on a tower we ordered. Food was decently quick to come out but then was like a ghost town to flag anyone down for a check 45min later. Had to go hunt down someone and ask. The minimum suggested 20% tip i didn't feel was earned but I've been there in that position so i tipped it. Prob wouldn't go back though. They carry a large selection of teas which is wonderful. There is something for almost everyone. The waitress/manager is sweet, welcoming, and easy to chat with. We would love to say more, but it ends there. Atmosphere / vibe: The decor and plates are eclectic, a style we love, but none of it blends. It was a mess. The room is filled with items for sale, one can not miss the big price tags. It looks like you are sitting in a yard sale. The music is regular radio and does not fit into an afternoon tea experience. It was rather distracting. Tea: They have a really neat concept, they offer little jars to smell the teas. A really neat concept, but I am not so sure putting ones nose in a small container that others have as well is very hygienic. Food: I recognize the soup right away. It's canned lipton. It went down hill from there. There wasn't a single thing we finished. It looked beautiful, but the taste was not good. One item that really threw us off was the cucumber sandwich. Today we tried the Creat Hill tea room for the first time. We have been to several other tear rooms and were excited to try one closer to home. So glad we did! The staff is wonderful, they really do an amazing job! Food was great! The curry chicken salad sandwich was amazing, the others were also great! My friends got the cranberry scone, I got butterscotch. The butterscotch was amazing! So rush and decadent! The Cranberry were also delicious and went so well with the lemon curd! They use authentic British products and really give you a full afternoon tea experience! They have a wide variety of teas, we tried at least four, all complex and delicious. They give you a collection of their teas in small glass jars so you can smell them before choosing which one you like. In addition to standard tea sandwiches (which were excellent and playfully cut into shapes), you can choose one of their homemade scones. They had maybe 8 types of scones, including some really nice, unusual ones like butterscotch (delicious).
