This review is long overdue! If you're considering Dr. Phelan as your OB/GYN, do it--you'll be so glad you did. From the very beginning, I knew I was in the best hands. Not only is Dr. Phelan incredibly skilled, kind, and experienced, but his entire office staff is just as wonderful. They are warm, attentive, and go above and beyond to make you feel cared for. They remember you by name, make scheduling easy, and will make you smile. Now, fair warning--this is going to be a long review. I've had the privilege of having Dr. Phelan deliver all three of my babies. My first pregnancy was twins, and he guided me through it with such confidence and expertise. When Baby B was breech, he worked his magic to deliver her safely, butt-first, with minimal tearing--an outcome I know wouldn't have been possible with just any doctor. He's truly a legend in the operating room. My labor process was long--five days of induction--but not once did he pressure me to make concessions on my birth plan or values. He gave me just enough information to keep my Type-A self informed but not overwhelmed, which I appreciated so much. My second pregnancy was much faster with me barely making it in time for an epidural. Dr. Phelan literally rushed to the hospital to be there, and when the nurse told me he had arrived, I burst into tears of relief. I knew I was safe, that my baby was in the best hands, and that everything would go smoothly. And it did. Beyond being an incredible doctor, Dr. Phelan was also one of the few people who truly saw me in my postpartum journey. Unlike many doctors who push medication as the first solution, he gave me the space to explore other healing methods first--while still keeping a watchful eye on me. He never dismissed my struggles, and he never made me feel rushed into a decision I wasn't ready for. That balance--made all the difference in my healing; and it truly changed the trajectory of my recovery. We are so fortunate to have found Dr. Phelan to help my wife and I through her first pregnancy and delivery. From our very first appointment, Dr. P was kind and welcoming. He shared in our excitement (despite it being just another day in the office for him) and answered our many questions. Over the course of my wife's pregnancy, he was a steady and trusted counselor and instilled us with the confidence we needed to make various, and sometimes hard, decisions. By the time she was ready for delivery, we trusted him whole-heartedly. His advocation for my wife really showed when we checked into the hospital for delivery though. He had a no-nonsense plan to induce, but was always flexible enough to adjust if needed. On a couple of occasions, Dr. P intervened with hospital staff and on-call doctors to make decisions on our behalf and ensure we received the best care in his absence. Ultimately, my wife required a c-section, which Dr. P performed. His calming presence, years of experience, and positive attitude were so helpful in getting us through a difficult labor and procedure. A man that truly loves his craft and is a consummate professional respected by everyone he works with. Dr. Phelan is the best OBGYN, he's delivered both my babies at Mercy Folsom, he delivered my daughter Millie seven months ago, and it was very important to me to have my grandmother in the room, she had lost her vision and gone blind two weeks prior to my delivery, and Dr. Phelan introduced himself, sat next to her and held her hand, and talked to her throughout my whole delivery, this meant the world to me, she passed away a week later, this is a memory that I will always hold close to my heart read more

This review is for the NP (Haley?)... NOT Dr Phelan - who, maybe, I should've seen. I was so excited to find a 'great' OBGYN after moving here a year ago. The yelp reviews seemed too good to be true. I went for my new patient check up / exam, and she also did a pap since it was due anyway. She ran the thingamabob under HOT water and inserted. Uhm. Burning hot. While she did take her time to answer my questions, I honestly did not feel confident that she knew what she was talking about. When I asked if I could do my blood draws immediately off the pill, she said yes. In reality, I should have waited (confirmed with my old OB who cared and delivered our first baby) until the hormones were out of my system for accuracy sake. I tried calling in to ask more questions, but she just said she did not know. The test results came back, and I received no call to discuss. The NP was kind, nice, took her time, good bedside manners, +2 stars. But that's about it. read more

I feel extremely fortunate to be under the amazing care of Dr. Phelan. We are pregnant with our first child after many miscarriages and miraculously conceived during our vow renewal in France. I researched thoroughly to find the best OB GYN. At my first appointment I expressed my concerns and Dr. Phelan's listened to and acknowledged me without judgment. Every appointment since January has been the same. Even when expressing my fears, anxieties, and personal struggles through this pregnancy, I am met with compassion and understanding. Dr. Phelan and his staff are absolutely wonderful. Dr. Phelan was with me through infertility, the birth of my first son, and secondary infertility. He is compassionate, personable, and has great bedside manner. As an anxious first time mom, he was always so comforting, and validated all the feelings. Cannot say enough great things about Dr.Phelan! When I was looking for a new OB I myself browsed Yelp and Google to read reviews from other patients and Dr. Phelan had a glowing reviews. So glad to be under the care of Dr. Phelan. He is a fantastic doctor and his office staff is just as great! Carrie at the front desk went above and beyond to help me with some insurance billing issues that took months to resolve and was always on top of things providing me status updates. All the nurses at this office are super friendly and helpful as well. I've never met a person I didn't like at Dr. Phelans office. I spent a lot of time with nurse Maritza once I got to my weekly appointments during pregnancy and we always had a good laugh about something, which is refreshing to not deal with robotic office staff. Dr. Phelan recently delivered our first baby and although my delivery experience was long and eventful he swiftly came in when it was go time and got the baby out safely and fast. Every office visit prior to delivery I was listened to and not rushed by Dr.Phelan even if I had a bunch of questions, which I appreciated. I have waited a long time to write this review--Dr. Phelan provided prenatal care for me and my first child, as well as part of my second pregnancy. Dr. Phelan is very experienced--and his expertise shines through--his prenatal care is very safe and I never feared for my child's safety. One time, I had severe spotting, and I was able to come in the same day, and they made sure my baby was okay. He missed the delivery of my first, and he apologized about it several times, saying he had to take his daughter to college. I had absolutely no issues with it, but it meant a lot to me that he cared. He also has a large staff consisting of a nutritionist, and a therapist for his postpartum patients, which I think is very thoughtful. The office staff is very prompt, good mannered, and in all matters, exceptional--I never had to worry about not having my medications sent in, or them not answering the phone. However, I eventually had to find a new OBGYN with my second child after a culmination of events happened, and I no longer feel good about not saying anything. Speculum exams, or any type of vaginal or cervical exams have been excruciatingly painful, like I'm being torn in half. For reference, I have given birth without pain meds and this hurt at least as much. Dr. Phelan would continue the examination, not even pausing, when I was yelling in pain. I'm used to exams hurting--and I have finally found an OBGYN where they don't hurt at all, but him not pausing at all or taking my pain into account has made it very difficult for me not to be afraid when having vaginal exams with other providers. Also, whenever declining a type of care, or asking why a specific type of care is needed, he is a man of a few words. I wanted to elaborate with him about getting the basic OB blood panel, since I got pregnant pretty quickly after my first, and I felt like I didn't need it. He told me that I "had to get it" without explaining to me why, and raised his voice at me when I asked him why it was important. I understand that he's been practicing medicine longer than I've been alive, but I do have a BSN, and I wanted to be able to make my own informed decisions by collaborating with my OB. I found that to be very difficult with Dr. Phelan. In short, if you want OB care where you get everything your OB tells you to, and you don't really want personalized care, I'm sure you'll never run into issues. I recently had my first baby under the care of Dr. Phelan (Tim) and honestly couldn't be happier with my experience. From the very beginning Dr Phelan was warm and welcoming. With his years of experience, his incredibly laid back attitude is much needed to soothe the nerves of a first time mom. His staff are friendly and kind and always helpful answering even the silliest questions. I never waited long for appointments (scheduling early in the AM is my trick with any doc), and dr Phelan came to my hospital room four times during my 24 hour delivery - my actual delivery getting him out of bed at 2:30am. He delivered my daughter within 20 minutes of arrival and expertly stitched me up before heading home for the night. I like to give him credit for my quick and easy pelvic recovery. I am actually telling friends to ditch their OB and have their baby through Creekside! And you can guarantee I'll be back for baby #2! read more

The staff and doctor are very good at what they do. Loved the nurse practitioner here and thought I had found my new doctor. I scheduled a very minor procedure and was told I need to come for an office consult. Since I live over 2 hours away (family nearby, and like the healthcare in Folsom better...anyway), I asked if I could do it over the phone or computer. I was told that it was necessary for me to come in. I assumed that some sort of physical check was going to happen. Instead Dr. Phelan came in and talked to me for less than 5 minutes and asked if I had any questions. At the procedure I found that I was not at all prepared for what was going to happen and had no idea what I should have done to prep or what to expect during and after. I later received a bill for $60 after insurance for that 5 minute visit. I called and asked for an adjustment, but was denied. Not only did I have to take a day off work and drive 4 hours rt, but then I feel that I'm getting nickel and dimed when it easily could have been done over the phone. And having come in, would expect that I would have been much better prepared. read more

I never expected to have such a bond with my OB, but I suppose it has to do with the fact that Dr. Phelan coached me through the scariest/most beautiful moment of my life when I gave birth to my first child. My birth didn't go as planned (whose does really?), but I'm so thankful to have had a doctor who knew what he was doing, and who was able to advise me with safe options. Dr. Phelan is very calm and collected...and I am not. When I first met him, I had my hesitations, but those diminished completely. He has always been patient when I ask questions, and is very knowledgeable due to his experience (my husband would agree). He is very reliant on his staff and interacts wonderfully with the nurses at Mercy. He's just a likeable guy all around. I am so happy that I found Dr. Phelan and his wonderful practice! He did my hysterectomy. Let me say, Dr. Phelan was amazing! The staff has been amazing too! This office has good medical care down perfectly; my entire experience with Creekside OB/GYN has been positive! My story: I ended up in the ER before becoming Dr. Phelan's patient and was told I needed to see a GYN ASAP for a big fibroid that was causing many problems. I was so impressed with this "doctor's office" right from the beginning when I spoke to Carrie on my first call to the office. Carrie listened and really heard me as I explained what I was going through medically, she was compassionate and was able to get me an appointment for the next morning. Dr. Phelan was so thorough in his explanations and caring while listening to my concerns and questions; he spent all the time I needed to feel confident in our plan for the hysterectomy; he discussed all the options and really listened to me. My trust in Dr. Phelan was fortified by how he treated me and I felt confident in his medical knowledge. Couple of days before the surgery, his Nurse Practitioner Haley called me with my lab results and went over them with me, explaining everything and answering my questions; she was very nice to talk to and was not in a hurry during our conversation. On surgery day, Dr. Phelan came and talked with me before the surgery in the pre-op, he was just so caring and kind in preparing me for the surgery! After the surgery, Dr. Phelan checked on me a few times in the first day and worked with the nurses to ensure I was well cared for during the healing process. I felt that he was not only my doctor, but he genuinely cared for me as a patient and a person. I am now about 6 weeks out and doing great! I had a fibroid removal years before by incision and do not remember recovering so quickly. In my opinion he is an excellent surgeon, I have healed so well. I am so glad I chose Dr. Phelan as he and his staff are simply wonderful, from medical care, human compassion, they are amazing! The surgical process was positive at Mercy Folsom and the Anesthesiologist was great too! I would recommend Dr. Phelan to all my family & friends. Just a side note: If you are having surgery, you will be talking to Carrie a lot (she answers the phone and is up in the front office). I was so impressed with her efficiency, organization, ability to answer questions, quick response time to messages, completion of paperwork, etc. She gets things done and is super nice. Not only was my prenatal care great but I had a csection and he did a superb job on my surgery. Only 6 weeks postpartum and I can hardly see my scar. Dr. Phelan is concise, to the point, and mild-mannered. His office is busy, so at times I waited for quite awhile to be seen. However it was so worth it! The quality of prenatal care I received was phenomenal! His staff is very knowledgable. They have forms all ready to be handed out, impeccable tracking systems, and gave me helpful information every step of the way. Dr. Phelan delivered my baby at the hospital. He knew my birth plan said I did not want a c-section unless absolutely medically necessary, so when it turned out during labor that the baby was transverse, he took the complex route of having an intrathecal administered, then turning the baby around, then delivering her via vacuum extraction (a process that only occurs in about 4% of births as most doctors resort to c-sections first). The baby was born perfectly healthy. The baby was 2 weeks past due. Dr. Phelan was fine with me pushing the date to be induced out some extra days (fortunately I didn't need to be induced as labor began the day before induction was scheduled). I guess my point is that he is a flexible doctor. He's also calm and reassuring throughout the pregnancy and labor. And on a side note, he usually plays trip-hop/electronic/dance music in his office:) I highly recommend him! read more

Dr. Phelan is a great doctor and answers all my annoying questions during the pregnancy. I just recently found out that he's an ultra-runner as well which is important to me because I am a bit of a workout fanatic so it's great to have a doctor that understands how patients need to lead an active style too. He is really patient and also experienced. I had a really full bladder before the ultrasound appt and he was very understanding and did my ultrasound quickly so I can go pee. Also he made me get a flu shot... Overall very good experiences so far and looking forward to the next trimester. read more

Dr Phelan delivered my second baby this February. He is a top not practitioner. Even though I didn't have as many questions this time, he always made sure to ask if I had any questions or concerns. He is great at explaining things when you are at a crossroads in your care/services so you feel like you are making an informed decision. I'll be seeing him as long as he is here and in practice. =) Note: I switched my appointment times from the last appointment of the day to the first and the wait times were 0-10 minutes with about 5 minutes on average. read more

Dr. Phelan recently delivered my second baby and it was definitely a better experience than the delivery of my first with the on call doctor I didn't even know at another hospital! He just helped me feel at ease and awesome bedside manner. The whole delivery process in general makes me very anxious but this feeling was eased by knowing I was in good hands of an exceptional doctor. Pregnancy is a crazy experience, it's great to have a doctor that knows you and spends time addressing your concerns. I would recommend this office to anyone without a doubt, Carrie and Emily are awesome too. The nurses in the hospital kept saying he's the best and I think that says a lot too. I love love love Dr. Phelan! He's very personable and easy to talk to. He always made me feel comfortable during my first pregnancy. Besides Dr. Phelan being a great provider, Emily, Dao and Carrie are great. They're always on top of things, super friendly and easy to talk to. No matter how busy or chaotic the office is they're always calm, cool, and collected. Why 4 stars instead of 5? Well I noticed that there's a new medical assistant and it's very hard to hear her, especially when she is calling a patient to bring them to the back office. Not only that she provided me with the wrong lab slip to the incorrect lab. Thankfully the error was caught by Carrie on the way out, because I would've been very unhappy to receive a big bill. Overall, I love the office, it's just the small things that caused the 4 stars. Even though they're just small errors it gets a little annoying when the same mistake keeps occurring. Dr Phelan and staff are AMAZING! I will never, ever change my OB because of each of them, from front desk to medical assistants, they are wonderful. He delivered my two youngest daughters, he is so cool and calm and professional, and he was supposed to be on vacation for my most recent one, but came in just to deliver her himself! Even with my middle one, he scheduled my induction so that he would be there to deliver her as well. Such dedication and personal interest to his patients is invaluable. I trust Dr. Phelan!! I had an IUD put in by another doctor about a year and half ago when I lived in the Bay Area and had a horrible experience. I was in tears the whole night and I had it taken out the next day. When I moved up to Folsom, I decided to try out a new OBGYN and asked my PCP about Dr. Phelan and he had great things to say about him. I went in for my pap-smear and felt totally comfortable so I decided to give an IUD another go. Needless to say, I was totally nervous. I was expecting to be in pain all night and maybe not even be able to work the next day. Instead he took me through the whole process and explained everything to me. The procedure only took a few minutes and he told me everything that he was doing. I felt fine walking out of the office and I even went for a run the next morning because I didn't cramp at all! I definitely think my horrible experience before had to do with the doctor, not the actual procedure. I would recommend Dr. Phelan to ANYONE! THANKS! read more

Dr. Phelan is absolutely amazing, I couldn't say enough about him. He delivered my first child she was in the posterior position he did what he had to do without a peep about having a C section which was my greatest fear. I was relieved when I could have her naturally. He was calm through the delivery never once freaked me out about what was going on. He really got to know me for me through the pregnancy which was nice. His staff is just as wonderful. Dr. Phelan is an awesome doctor and person and his staff are all so wonderful too! I just had my first baby and I already miss going to all my prenatal appointments. He took the time to answer any questions my husband and I had and allay our concerns; we never felt rushed. This was especially nice as I am a first time mom. When it came time for me to deliver I was pushing for a long time. Dr. Phelan checked and confirmed the baby was in the posterior position. He then turned the baby around so she was facing the right way. My husband said it was amazing to watch. He saved me from a c-section! He was so calm, collected, and confidence inspiring. Dr Phelan delivered my daughter via C-section in December 2013. Although I was happy with my prenatal care and the way he treated me, in the end I was a little disappointed.. His staff still didn't know my name even though I was coming in weekly! Stephanie his NP was amazing and helped me through my labor. My wife was a patient. Going with her to the appointments, we had to alot over an hour for the appointments because they would over book so we switched to morning appointments. Dr Tim seems more of a business man than a doctor meeting with pharmaceutical reps and dressing like a CEO. My wife gave birth in the early morning. During her time in the hospital, he never stopped by. He only gave her a phone call. Dr Ruth Haskins actually delivered our baby. She gets to know her patients and cares for them. read more
