As I reflect on my first pregnancy and my first delivery I think I have things to add to my previous review. Dr. Chu has a great bedside manner, calm cool and collected. Makes you feel at ease and comfortable. I did not see any other doctors in the office while in prenatal care with dr chu. What I want to add is a few things centered around my delivery itself. Firstly, I had one (maybe 2?) appointments where my blood pressure was higher than normal and this caused for concern and Dr chu suggested that if I had the high blood pressure again he would recommend inducing my labor on or near my due date. What ended up happening was my blood pressure leveled out and he said we wouldn't need to induce. I ended up going into spontaneous labor with no intervention or swabs/sweeps a week early. As mentioned in my previous review, Dr chu was not on call or working that day but he came in and delivered my baby anyway. He was encouraging and present for my 4 hours of pushing. We ended up having to do pitocin because my baby was showing signs of distress and wasn't progressing as expected. Eventually i ran out of steam and didn't have much left in my tank even with the epidural. We needed an intervention. C section was briefly brought up but luckily we didn't go that route. Some Doctors will bring up c sections with much less reason to do so. I'm glad Dr chu didn't push that Onto me. What we did do was a vacuum birth. It was a little scary for me but it's what was needed to get my baby out safely. Now that I'm almost due to have my second and no longer can see Dr chu due to insurance i appreciate his care and service more than ever. I do not know the doctors at my current facility and will not meet anyone prior to giving birth. It worries me not knowing what my Dr will be like this time around. Ladies, I do not have a bikini body, but if I did have one, I barely have a C-section scare! He is an excellent surgeon. Dr. Chu is by far the best OBGYN doctor I've ever been to. Between growing up in my hometown, moving to a new city for college, then moving to Sacramento 5 years ago and having to change docs 3 times just in Sac, I have seen my fair share. It's been remarkable how hard it is to find a doctor with professional bedside manner, someone who listens without judgment and puts your worries at ease rather than amplifying your concerns. I especially appreciate that Dr. Chu is very up on research and seems very in tune with the latest recommendations, rather than simply relying on his gut or 'years of experience' as some doctors do, which isn't always bad but always seems concerning to me when a doc seems to be referencing research from decades ago. Most impressively, Dr. Chu never seems in a rush to listen or talk during the visit, some docs are clearly overbooked or behind or just in a hurry, and I can't tell you how nice it feels to go to a doctor who wants to listen and how stunningly different it feels compared to most medical professionals today. I have never had a gynecologist who has been as informative and thorough as Dr. Chu. He took the time to really answer all of my questions and provide me with as much education as he could. I have always had female gynecologists, so I was weary to meet with Dr. Chu, but he made me feel very comfortable and I could tell how much respect he has for women and how genuinely he wants to help us. If you are looking for an OB/GYN, you can save a lot of time by stopping now and going with Dr. Chu. Over the last four years, we have struggled with fertility issues, so finding a good OB/GYN was important. Before my wife became Dr. Chu's patient, we bounced between a few OB/GYNs that either lacked in the knowledge or bedside manner department. In 2013, my wife found Dr. Chu and has been thrilled ever since. Long story short, after two years of his support and knowledge, Dr. Chu delivered our son just a few weeks ago. Throughout our journey to start our family, Dr. Chu has been honest, knowledgeable, open, and supportive. When we eventually got pregnant, Dr. Chu really shined. His dedication to patient care was amazing. Every question we had, no matter how small, was answered quickly and respectfully. I don't remember having to wait even a day to hear back from him if my wife had a question or concern. When we went over our birth plan and we encountered something that he thought was unnecessary or didn't agree with, he would voice his opinion but was open to it as long as it didn't put his patient or the baby at risk. At every appointment, we were never rushed out and asked twice if we had any more questions before he left the room. As the husband of the patient, I appreciated Dr. Chu. His always calm demeanor and accessibility went a long way in making my wife's pregnancy go smoothly for me. There is a lot of opportunity to worry during pregnancy, and Dr. Chu kept all of that in line. Luckily, our pregnancy was pretty smooth, and there were only things that we had to stay aware of, but nothing that we had to REALLY worry about. I imagine without Dr. Chu, we would have many unnecessary freak outs. I'll also add that Dr. Chu does have a sense of humor and interacting with him is entertaining. When my wife went into labor, it progressed much faster than expected and the hospital hadn't paged Dr. Chu until after my wife was ready to push. Because he was such a big part of our pregnancy experience, my wife put in the effort and waited for Dr. Chu to arrive. When he got there, he kept her calm and focused, and our son was delivered quickly and easily. After he finished all of the post-delivery stuff and was able to chit chat, Dr. Chu mentioned that on the drive to the delivery room, he couldn't help but reflect on how far we had come since my wife came in for her first appointment in 2013. Before he left the room, he took a few seconds to admire our son and you could tell that he gets a deep sense of satisfaction out his job, which is pretty neat. Again, if he is covered by your health plan, look no further than Dr. Chu. From my wife: I cannot sing Dr. Chu's praises much more than my husband already has. In a nutshell, his calm and empathetic nature made our stressful infertility journey easier, he's very gentle during exams, and he helped me focus less on the what-if's of pregnancy and more on taking care of myself-physically and emotionally. Towards the end of my pregnancy, he was attentive and reassuring, but sent me to the hospital for monitoring when necessary. His calm, but thorough, way of treating patients is one of the reasons I changed insurance companies to continue as his patient. Dr. Chu is the best OB/GYN in Sacramento. He was my doctor for the past five or so years when I was a patient at UC Davis. He was an excellent resource for family planning and women's health, generally. When I got pregnant last November, I knew I was in good hands. Throughout my pregnancy, my husband and I felt extremely confident in Dr. Chu's care. He is thorough, patient, and calm. He was straightforward, and answered all of my questions without judgment. I'd like to think I'm sort of hippie, and Dr. Chu was very open to my less traditional plans, while always informing me of risks in an understandable and non-threatening manner. During my third trimester, Dr. Chu left UCD and went into private practice. I was given the option of seeing a different OB at UCD, or switching insurance to continue to see Dr. Chu. If you've ever tried to get a new doctor during pregnancy, you know it's like pulling teeth. I had to deal with UCD, Blue Shield, and the Department of Managed Healthcare, but in the end, I got to keep seeing Dr. Chu. I say confidently that continuing to see him was totally worth the hours I put into it, and I'd do it again. I had a tough labor, induced twelve days after my due date. Between my due date and the day I was induced (and even before then), Dr. Chu was available. He answered my calls and texts, and made me feel like I was his only patient. My nurses were shocked that I had my doctor's cell phone number, and kept telling me how lucky I was. Although the delivery was pretty standard, I had some post-delivery complications that were pretty scary. Dr. Chu is such a pro, and made sure that I and my husband knew what was going on, that we were safe, and that I had the best medical care. I literally trust him with my life. I have gotten to know a few of Dr. Chu's other patients, and everyone has feelings similar to mine. We all feel like we are his only patients, or at least his most important patients. Very unprofessional. I had an appointment set and they made it very clear 330 check in time with a 3:45 appointment. I live in Roseville so it took me 45 minutes to even get here and parking was a nightmare. I walk in at 305, nobody greets me a woman behind the counter with red curly hair looks at me and rudely says, you have an appointment? I respond and tell her yes and she says, she'll help you right now talking about another receptionist. The other receptionist informs me Dr. Chu had to go deliver a baby and that I was early, as if she was going to call me and let me know my appointment is cancelled 15 minutes before. She said he opened up his lunch on Tuesday, I told her that wouldn't work and I basically saw my way out. I understand things happen, doctors deliver babies and have medical emergencies to tend to. It would've probably felt a lot better knowing I wasted an hour and a half of my time had the staff been better. I hope Dr. Chu requests better standards from his staff in the future. read more

And it took two weeks for the billing department to call me back well to finally answer me. We found Dr. Chu through our Natural Birthing Class at Sutter. Two of the couples in our class raved about him and the instructor confirmed that she had heard great things about him. She said that he was known to be very supportive of patients who want a more natural birthing experience. When we met Dr. Chu and decided to have him deliver our baby, we were at 35 weeks. I had gestational diabetes and I was concerned about making a change so late in my pregnancy. But, Dr. Chu immediately put my concerns to rest as he was incredibly knowledgeable and he communicated with me constantly around my blood sugars. We were able to control the GD with exercise and diet with the help of Dr. Chu's closely monitoring my blood sugars. With each appointment, we became more and more pleased with our decision to choose Dr. Chu- he never rushed us and let us ask every question on our list. It was clear that he cared about us and our experience. His calm and patient demeanor became even more reassuring when we delivered. Because of my advanced maternal age + gestational diabetes, we had to be induced. Over the 36 hours of induction and labor, the birth plan that we had developed was no longer viable. But, Dr. Chu and the entire nursing staff worked to honor our wishes every step of the way. Dr. Chu was on call the day we were induced and he came in and sat down and spoke with us several times throughout the day- which was incredibly comforting. When the time came to have a c-section, Dr. Chu came back to the hospital within 30 minutes, had his entire team sit down with me for 15 minutes to explain what we could expect, and then once in the OR, he had my baby boy out, safely, within 5, minutes. I was very sad that my body wasn't responding and a c-section was the ultimate outcome. However, Dr. Chu and his team did everything possible to honor my wishes for a gentler c-section experience- they dimmed the lights, kept the talking to a minimum, allowed for delayed cord clamping and had my sweet baby on my chest within 2 minutes. Dr. Chu is a perfect mix of professional and empathetic. He is simply good at what he does- my incision is healing really well and I was up and about shortly after a major surgery. MOST IMPORTANTLY: we have a healthy baby and mom! I was originally scheduled to have a hysterectomy with a different OBGYN, but at my pre op appt. she told me she was no longer comfortable doing the surgery laparoscopic due to the size of my uterus and fibroid tumor. She suggested I find a doctor who had access to a robotic arm during the surgery, something she didn't have access to. So, I researched and found Dr. Chu who specializes in using the robotic arm. I just had my hysterectomy a little over a week ago with Dr. Chu. I couldn't be any happier with Dr. Chu and the surgery. He did a fantastic job (pre op appts., surgery and post op appt.). Dr. Michael Chu is wonderful! I had seen him initially when I got pregnant and I love his calm, patience demeanor. He never rushed me through my visits and answered all my questions. Unfortunately I have Western Health Advantage (WHA) and wanted to deliver at UC Davis instead of Mercy. So when I changed my insurance to be able to deliver at UC Davis it wouldn't allow me to continue seeing him. FYI, he also delivers at Sutter. So there are other options depending on your health insurance plan. I was so sad to transfer to another doctor half way through, but I wanted to acknowledge what a great doctor he is and will continue to recommend him to family and friends. Update: I had gone to UC Davis to deliver my baby and to my surprise, Dr. Chu was there! He only happens to be a UC Davis rarely and I landed on a day that he was present. I was beyond excited and so relieved to know there may be a chance he may deliver my baby. When the time came, Dr. Chu was called in and able to deliver my sweet boy. I had an amazing birthing experience and a big part of that was because of this doctor. He put me at ease and encouraged me to push. My son was born before I knew it. Dr Chu is one of best and smartest doctor I've met. Highly recommended by my peers at work and he did not fail me. He just did my surgery two weeks ago that was complicated by several adhesions around my uterus but he was able to save me and my ovaries, so thankful and blessed to have him as my OB-GYN doctor. I went back to remove my IUD protection to prepare for my pregnancy and i was so nervous because I was traumatized by my previous experience but Dr chu answered all the questions I had for 15 minutes and made me feel comfortable!! I first met Dr. Chu while pregnant with my first child (and actually being seen by a different OB/GYN) seven years ago. Dr. Chu is the most caring, attentive and hardworking doctor that I have ever met. Prior to having my baby I was very impressed with how well he listens and how thoughtful his responses are. I know OBGYN doctors are very busy and he makes you feel like you're real priority. He responds quickly and thoroughly to emails and doesn't rush during your appointments. My baby was born csection at 37 weeks and the week prior we were in the hospital. Dr. Chu checked on us regularly, answered all our questions (sometimes the same question multiple times without being annoyed) and I always felt like my baby and I were in good hands. I am so grateful he was and is my doctor. There were moments when I felt really anxious and it helped a great deal to have a doctor that I really trusted and was so compassionate and clear when explaining things to my husband and me. Dr. Chu was my third opinion doctor after being told twice before my only option was hysterectomy (at age 33). He is very engaged and thorough while seeing you. He weighed every option and took all tests until we decided together a robotic myomectomy surgery was my best option. I had an open myomectomy less than two years prior (with another doctor). My recovery from robotic surgery with Dr. Chu was night and day from my previous surgery. I went back to work a week later and my pain was extremely low. I am so lucky to have had Dr.Chu as my OB. He guided me through a complicated first pregnancy and c section and I am so grateful to have been under his care. I am a physician myself and have very high expectations when it comes to bedside manner and patient care and Dr. Chu exceeded them. Dr. Chu always took extra care to patiently answer all of my questions and address any of my or my husbands concerns. When my water broke 3 weeks early and I needed a c section Dr. Chu came in to the hospital to perform my procedure even though he was not on call or even working that day. He is also one of the most skilled OB's I have seen when it comes to surgical technique (I am an anesthesiologist and have seen many OB's operate). I cannot believe how invisible my incision is and am so grateful that Dr. Chu took the care to make it look beautiful. This update is late, my daughter is now 19 months old and Dr.Chu delivered her and also treated me throughout my pregnancy. He has easily been the best dr ive ever met. Im moving to Georgia and im so sad he won't be my dr anymore. I had a csection with my first born(different dr)dr.chu knew how bad i wanted to have a natural birth with my second baby and he did everything in his power to make that work. It did, i had my beautiful baby girl naturally. We succeeded in our vbac. He literally slept at the hospital to keep an eye on me even though he had been there for a day already. I reccomend him to everyone i meet because every woman deserves a doctor that cares like he does. Not to mention his staff is awesome. Love all those girls! read more

LAZY. The office is disorganized and extremely slow. You can't get them to tell you what day of the week it is if you put a calendar in front of them. The Dr. acts as busy as the only doc in town. You have to keep chasing them for appointments, tests and results. You are better off with a better more professional dr. AVOID. read more

During the morning appointments my total wait time to see Dr Chu, once seated in the exam room, were never more than 15 mins and waited no more than 30 mins during the afternoon appointments. Which is understandable given the time he spends with me. The receptionists and MAs are lovely to interact with. As expected, Dr Chu is knowledgeable, patient and unassuming person. Dr Chu never rushed me during my appointments, he always ensured he had answered all of my questions and even waited if it seemed like I had some hesitation about asking a question. He had also provided my family with great referrals to our current pediatrician and general practitioner. Although he never guaranteed to be present at my delivery, in the end the stars aligned and Dr Chu was on call the weekend I delivered. I cannot be more grateful that it was someone whom I was familiar with to welcome my son into the world. During my delivery he was fully aware of the possibilities that my newborn may have had a nuchal cord (triple), he has a calming affect and never left any doubt in my mind that there were any major concerns, I understand now that the outcome could have differ.
