This is an old time motor hotel (motel) located on the main drag, just up the hill from Shepler's Ferry. It transported me back to family vacations in the 1960s, before interstates and box hotels were pervasive. On first sight, one might understandably move on. Rust on the outside of the motel room doors might have suggested poor upkeep. But we already had reservations and the rust was a false flag. Check-in was quick. The owner called us as we approached the Mackinac bridge to confirm our arrival. As has been reported by others, staff was both friendly and helpful. We were offered discounted ferry tickets and an offer that we could leave our car at the hotel during our day visit to the island. This saved us parking fees. The Shepler's shuttle was called to collect us the next day and dropped us off when we returned. As many have written, this family operated motel is impeccably clean and well appointed inside. Internet was fast, heat in the evenings kept us comfortable. (Many hotels turn off heat until October). This motel has obviously gone through a recent renovation. Entering the room, the smell of freshly laid carpet was apparent. The two queen beds were comfortable and provided a good night sleep for our family of 3. Despite the location on a busy street, insulation and sound proofed windows muffled any noise from passing traffic. All important hot water had good pressure and volume in a very clean bathroom. (The only negative would be the towels which were rather thin). We normally stay in brand name box hotels when we are on the road because there is usually a free breakfast. Wayside offers coffee but no breakfast. But that was not a problem. A pancake house was a short walk down the street. All in all, we enjoyed our time at Wayside Motel. It was a good value. We will look to stay here again on our next visit to Mackinac Island.

Friendly owners, perfect amenities, rock-bottom rates. The rooms are modest, traditional roadside-motel style, and are kept spotlessly clean. The cleaning girl's child will torment you. If he's not trying to get in your room, he's standing on the chairs screeching like a vulture. The morning we checked out he was standing in a puddle of water kicking it at guests as they walked by. When asked to please stop doing it, he put on a grin and kicked water at me even harder. We had came across Waterway Inn which also had mobile homes. We decided it was a better idea with all of us to stop and see if they had availability and they did (around 11:30pm) , the co owner showed us where the mobile home was went in before us and turned on the lights in the mobile home also turned on the heat... I thought was a little strange.. We had settled in, I was looking for an extra blanket. I opened the drawers in the first bedroom, the bottom drawer had what I thought was a bedbug. I called my husband over to check. It was a cockroach. Needless to say we threw all of our clothes into the back of our truck to wash at a later time. My husband went in and showed the imagine, the guy said it was a "JuneBug"..... we are supposed to receive a refund. I attached the photo. We realized he went in before us to more than likely to scatter the cockroaches.... Also my daughter is allergic to certain breeds of dogs. So we preferred not to have a dog room. But owner said due to insurance reasons.

The lighting in the room was a little bit older, but it served its purpose. The furnishings were also a little bit worn in. I suspect the people that typically stay here don't have an issue with such things, but you could tell the items in the room were all a little bit long in the tooth. Check-in went more or less OK, although the staff seemed a bit bewildered and disorganized. It was cute when we were handed actual keys. Such a novelty to have actual keys instead of key cards in this day and age. We had to use their little dropbox to turn the keys in when we left early the following morning. This was fine of course but I would've appreciated being told about it in advance. On balance I don't think this would be my first choice for a stay again in the future.

Other guests at that hotel made for a miserable night, smoking and drinking into the wee hours outside their room directly below us. Complete with a drunken brawl at one point. I also had an issue getting a hold of staff in the morning when I accidentally left something behind when we left. We'd left the key in the room, as instructed. Fortunately, I was able to retrieve it because we forgot to close the door all the way; there no one in the office until 9 am and calls to both numbers posted for help before then weren't answered. I would have told the owners myself if I could have.
