From our hotel room, we could see people walking and biking around the streets, we could hear the clip-clop of the horse hooves on the cobblestones, we could smell the fudge from all of the fudge stores nearby. Chippewa Hotel is located in downtown Mackinac, and you can really get a feel for the island from this hotel. We visited around Halloween, and the hotel was decked out in decorations. It was very cute, and I feel like they might have gone all out because we were there the weekend before the island shuts down to tourists, so they really put their foot in it, so to speak. The hotel itself is very clean and tidy, but it's "vintage," meaning that some of the fixtures and furniture look like they're straight out of the early 1980s. But it all looks intentional. Everything in the hotel is purposefully placed, so you get an antique vibe but without a touch of disarray. One of the things that I appreciated about the rooms here is that the windows open! I love a hotel room that can receive fresh air. Another thing that I love: They service your room without you even having to ask! And they arrange any stuffed animals on the bed just so. Plus, they offer turn-down serve complimentary! You get a little chocolate on your pillow. They go the extra mile here. Outside, they have a gigantic heated hot tub. This thing is like a small pool! It's open all season. My hot-tub-loving youngest child requested that we visit the hot tub multiple times per day. Chippewa Hotel is attached to The Pink Pony, a bar and restaurant. The hotel also has a nice fudge shop as soon as you walk through the entrance, which is a nice touch. There are covered sitting porches in both the front and back of the building, giving guests a nice place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Our room also had a nice window view where we could watch people walking around outside and see the horse-drawn carriages touring the island, which was one of the highlights of our stay. However, there were several things that kept me from rating the hotel higher. Warning to those considering staying at the hotel: The room did not have a phone, microwave, or refrigerator, which was an inconvenience for us. We had some leftover pizza that we had to throw away because we had nowhere to store it. The ironing setup was also not very convenient. The ironing board was located on the first floor in an area that you probably wouldn't know about unless someone told you where it was, and you had to get the iron itself from the front desk. Since you couldn't iron in your room, this was another inconvenience. My biggest concern was the cleanliness of the bathroom. There was hair on some of the towels and in the bathtub. There was also noticeable dust and hair around the toilet area that was especially visible when the toilet seat cover was put down. The room itself was nice and fit the historic character of the hotel, but I feel the cleanliness could have been much better. Overall, the Murray Hotel has a lot of charm, a great location, and some nice features that make it feel like you're stepping back in time. However, the lack of basic room amenities and, most importantly, the cleanliness issues kept the experience from being better for us. I give this hotel 3 out of 5. The location of the hotel is perfect but I wouldn't stay there again because of the ironing situation and the cleanliness.
