What a journey this has been. I recently moved to TX from PA and was looking for a salon to get my…read morehair cut. Found this page on Yelp and between the reviews and photos, I decided to call Lisa for an appointment. I should have known immediately there was something up when she asked me for a deposit. I have never been to a quality salon where I need to pay a deposit for my services. I shrugged it off and moved forward. When I finally got to her salon, it was like nothing I had ever seen before. Mind you where I come from - This is not a salon, this is like an studio where one person works. I even told her "I feel like I'm at my girl friends getting my hair done." She asked a few questions about my hair goals and took a few pictures of my 'before' look. I showed her a couple inspo-photos - one for cut, one for color. She decided to cut my hair before applying lightener which was another "huh?" moment but decided to just go with it.. after all.. shes supposed to be the professional right? Her first cut is literally where we agreed my length would be. Needless to say when she started cutting, it was A LOT shorter than we agreed on. I'm very easy going and I can totally rock a short 'do BUT this is still not what we discussed. She explained that she wouldn't be able to acheive the color I was looking for in one session, but the color wasn't even what she told me it would be. She advised against my request for highlights and suggested a balayage which I went with buuut... I'm 95% sure I still got highlights. Color, toner, cut. After all was said and done, I paid $400. Got home and my hair was not even, so I text Lisa and set up to come back in to fix my cut. She asked me to straighten my hair before I go for a dry cut.. Why I need to do my hair before a hair appointment is beyond me. I thought that's what all the tools were for in the studio. Silly me. We discussed how unhappy I was with the results and she just offered more services. Why would I want to return for more services if you are unable to execute the first one? Anyway, I guess she tried to fix my hair but ultimately she just made it worse. I reached my limit when she cut my hair without a cape on. How can you charge someone hundreds of dollars per visit then let them walk out with hair all over them???? Oh by the way, don't book your next appointment in advanced unless you're sure you want to trust her with your hair. Apparently that $50 deposit is non-refundable but you wont know that unless you visit her website. Which is conveniently not listed on Yelp.

This is the first location where I've ever seen a guy (Perry) cutting hair. From the locations I've been to and when I've seen the staff at Minute Maid Park - during Astros games, I;'v only ever seen females. At any rate, I decided to have Perry do my son's hair. We were both a bit nervous, because his barber at the Tomball Crossing location always did an amazing job on his hair. To our surprise, Perry did a superb job! My son inherited a "Widow's Peak" from his mom, so some barbers don't really know how to handle the task. He took the time to make sure that it was straight and, unlike some barbers, he didn't cut himself into a bind, by trying to chip away at the edge up. I think that this will work as a backup, if I can continue to get Perry.

This was once known as Star Hair Salon, but per regulars it has been known as Van's Hair Salon for…read moreatleast 10+ years now. It was a trip down memory lane for me going back here this weekend, as this used to be my hair cut joint when I was 13 years of age and money was tight. $2.99 haircuts was the rate back then. The shopping center was quite run down even then, but I would often ride by bike to come here on my own. This place used to be a hustling and bustling salon with a long line of kids and adults (men and women) waiting to have their hair styled by Van Troung. Van Troung had this large personality about her with her hair styled and permed as if she were getting married anytime I would goto see her. She was loud and very welcoming. She was so much in demand that I would often wait for 30-45 minutes before my turn would come. You could browse through variety of style books and tell her which style you preferred. You could also find hair products showcased for sale along with a TV in a corner with some local channel playing one thing or another. There was definitely sound and action. My dad has been going there ever since I left Houston. This is still his joint :) I decided to accompany him since I needed a cut badly. I was a bit nervous going back after 16+ years. All this nostalgia was starting to set in as I pulled up in the parking lot. The shopping center was even more run down than before of what I can remember, but I knew exactly where to go. I opened the door and it was all but empty with one customer in the chair having his hair styled by Van Troung. Van had let her hair drop. She looked shorter as if she had shrunk, or maybe she was wearing heels before, or maybe I was just shorter back then. She was no longer loud but she is still extremely welcoming, nice, and appreciative. She seems to have her regulars down quite well, as she recognized my dad and greeted him and acknowledged that I was his son. Van's salon no longer has products for sale. The showcase was empty. She recommends people to go buy products at Target now. The TV is no longer operational. It is sitting on the reception desk, all dead and inoperable if I had to guess. The place was quite. The current rate is $6 (cash only). My turn came for the cut shortly. As I sat down on the chair, she told me not to worry and to trust her. I was like is she a mind reader? I was slightly worried to be honest. She was done in 15 minutes or so, and she did a great job just like she did all of my childhood. She still has the touch. If you don't mind the run down nature of the shopping center and the hair salon, I would still highly recommend Van's Salon on Boone road in Houston, TX. Atleast once will not hurt :)

I came here with my sister, who has been a loyal customer for over two years, and unfortunately, our most recent visit left a bad impression due to the unprofessional behavior of one of your stylists. As small business owners ourselves, we know how important it is to treat customers with respect--especially loyal ones. This experience did not reflect that standard. To the owners and management: it is important to ensure your staff are properly trained in both communication and customer service. Clear language skills and professionalism are essential in this industry. Also, not every customer is looking for discounts or free services--we are simply looking for quality work and respectful treatment. During this visit, my sister's beautiful hair was shaved in the back with a razor to correct a cut that had been done too short. Using a razor in that way on a woman's hair is highly unprofessional and unacceptable. We understand that mistakes happen. We are all human, and sometimes language barriers or misunderstandings occur. However, what matters most is how those situations are handled--with kindness, accountability, and respect. This is a business that charges premium prices, and with that comes the responsibility to train and guide staff on how to properly interact with customers. We are not asking for refunds or free services. What we expect is acknowledgment, empathy, and clear communication about next steps--instead of being immediately asked to remove a negative review in exchange for a free fix. We hope management takes this feedback seriously and uses it to improve the customer experience moving forward.
