I've just started taking classes with Tara and she is WONDERFUL. Her voice projects as she speaks, she is eloquent with her speech, and listening to her instruct is perfect. Her flows are quick, but that is normal for vinyasa flows. She starts with Child's Pose, OM's and breathing, proceeds with her sun salutations, back bends, core strengthening, inversions to slow down the heart, and finishes with Shavasana. Tara teaches every Monday & Wednesday evening, and rotates on Saturday mornings with Peter. read more

Creating Space Yoga - Yoga Near Me - Portland, Maine

What a nice, small class! I connected with Creating Space Yoga after finding them on ClassPass as a virtual yoga partner. While my state's yoga studios are open, I'm not comfortable practicing in-person yet. I've always loved the idea of visiting Maine and was excited to give them a try! Creating Space is a small yoga studio and I immediately sensed their close knit vibes. I didn't see much of the studio, but it felt intimate and no-frills. When I logged on, it was just a handful of people, and Linh was very sweet about greeting me and chatting a bit about Cleveland. Linh's yoga class was gentle and just what I needed on a stressful day. It contained a few poses I don't normally get in my local Yin classes, so that was a nice change! In Yin, we hold poses for several minutes. Yet, sometimes, when I visit Yin classes, they don't hold the poses very long. I liked that Linh was true to Yin and held poses for the appropriate amount of time. I had a nice experience visiting them virtually and would totally come back...give them a try! read more

Unsafe, unwelcoming, and disorganized. I've never written a bad review before, but the owner refused to refund me and this place- as a yoga studio designed for inclusive, holistic well-being- is at higher risk for doing harm, so here's my cautionary tale. TL/DR: poor communication, no welcome, instructor touches students without asking for no good reason, dubious covid protocols, not inclusive of dis/ability or class identities, don't go here. No one was at the reception desk when I came in. Okay, it's a morning class, I could overlook this alone. Then there was no welcome to class or community norms at the beginning of the class, either. There was no place on the online sign-up to write about any accommodations I needed in lieu of talking with the instructor beforehand, either. The instructor did not introduce themselves (name? Pronouns? Nothing) and came over, rather frazzled, thrusting a clipboard at me with a waiver when the class was beginning and I was trying to settle into my practice. Online sign-ups are necessary and this could have been included online. They jumped right into a nice reflective reading and started with lots of props use with no options to skip, something I'm not keen on. All this would be acceptable, but then the instructor started walking around making adjustments by touching people without warning or consent. (Yes, I saw after on the website a note that students are supposed to tell instructors when they don't want to be touched, but there was no opportunity to do so; not everyone can or does read the full website; and opting out rather than opting into getting touched is problematic. This should be part of a new student orientation or a brief welcome to class.) They came over and went to touch me, telling me I didn't transition from downward dog to high plank fast enough! My pose wasn't endangering myself or others so why did this matter? I was incredibly triggered, said sorry, and told them not to touch me. This is not inclusive, safe, or even beginning to approach basic trauma-informed yoga practice, nor does this strictness with pace of pose transition foster an environment of wellness. I wanted to get out of there quickly to re-center myself before discussing any of this, but as I was leaving, the instructor chose to tell me excitedly that I didn't have to wear my mask during class. They said people were all vaccinated. I didn't have to show proof of vaccination when I registered, so I'm skeptical of this. I should be able to make choices about my own mask-wearing without attention being drawn to it. It was a multigenerational class (wonderful!) which gives me all the more reason to wear a mask for the community's wellness. I know this was the instructor's belated effort to orient me to community norms, but I could clearly see I was the only one wearing a mask there, so could have inferred it wasn't required (a sadly common problem across studios that goes against inclusive of disabled and chronically ill folks). It's pretty uncomfortable that, of all the things she chose to share, this is what she called out. I left feeling supremely unsafe and unwelcomed. On top of this, the rates on the main page were a whopping 30% lower than what I paid for (although it seems after I told them twice about this, they've fixed them.) This leap- from $40 for the new student special to $60 on the checkout page- makes a huge difference in accessibility for people like me who are under- or un- employed and using yoga to deal with those stressors. (Note, for comparison, that the Portland Yoga Project has a $30 new student special and is supremely welcoming and safe, even offering a fully masked weekly class! Go there!) There was a very confusing call from the owner when my card didn't go through the first time I registered. The page also said the new student special was only available after a first class low rate- a good policy- but apparently this has changed as well, and I was urged on the phone to pay online when I already got the feeling I should wait to see the studio. It's my fault I didn't check it out first, but I have never, in my dozens of yoga studio visits, had such a disorganized, unwelcoming, and unsafe experience. When I gently explained the stress of the class and offered to pay full for a drop-in class (a generous $16) if I was refunded for the month, via two emails, they refused a refund and told me to try other classes. No curiosity about what my issues were. The class wasn't the problem- the whole studio environment is. It seems the instructor I had is also the owner. I am now unable financially to safely practice yoga at a studio this month without a refund. read more

Both times I've been here have been during events either to support the Animal Refuge League or to finish off the Yelp Fit Club. I really like this yoga studio a lot. The instructors are patient and I like that they walk around and help adjust you into the correct pose. Only if you want them to! It's warm yoga, not hot but I'm assuming the heat could be jacked up so you'd really sweat. I would say I'm an intermediate skill level and I found both visits to include a few things that have challenged me. They definitely offer a variety of classes for all skill levels and at convenient times especially if you work. I want to go back and get the 10 visit pass but I'm trying to save my pennies. I like that the studio is big enough and a bit of a hidden gem so dropping into a class is no big deal. I highly recommend checking this place out. They have their own parking lot which is always a plus in my book, especially in Portland. The only downside is that some of the instructors can be soft-spoken so if you like to hide in the back row (like me), it can be hard to hear. read more

If you are looking for a yoga space where you can practice and learn at your own pace, Creating Space yoga is it! The space is welcoming, clean and calm. The teacher/instructors are kind and great at offering poses for advanced through beginner poses. They offer corrections to poses and adjust to the classes level of practice. The end of class/shavasana is always a calming and restful way to move on to the rest of the day. I was looking for a studio that had practice/class times convenient to my 8:30 to 4:30 work schedule which would allow me to practice in the AM a few times per week and fit in some after work practices as well. My goal is to practice 3 to 5 times a week to help manage the stress and anxiety of daily/work life and move toward a healthier lifestyle. Six weeks have passed now and through the kind assistance of the yoga teachers at Creating Space, I am feeling much better! My anxiety is managed and I am learning new tools to manage the stress of a busy daily life. The Introductory month of 60.00 dollars allowed me to try as many classes and instructors as I could attend. Carol offers workshops with guest instructors to enhance and deepen practice. Last night, I participated in a fantastic workshop on myofascial release through the use of props. So glad I signed up for this event! It was great! Create some space in your life. I've been searching for a heated class and studio that worked for me and I was very happy to enjoy a mid day heated vinyasa flow class taught by Arabella. She was hands on and extremely nice, not to mention a great teacher. The class was extremely small which I loved and I will certainly be returning. Take advantage of the $5 first class! read more

I love this yoga studio! The classes are great! There are relaxing and slow paced classes, nice flow classes and then extreme workout yoga so everyone can find their place here. The environment is very peaceful, calm and relaxing! There are nice, clean bathrooms with showers which is a nice perk. Some of the classes are heated which is so amazing, especially in the winter. Helps you get a good sweat on and feel cozy but its not overwhelmingly hot. The teachers are super nice and supportive. I recommend this yoga studio to everyone 100%. read more

I've been coming to the studio regularly for over a year now. The instructors here are very welcoming and inviting. They hold different events, and theres always an opportunity to learn something new or gain a new experience. There is plenty of parking at this location, which is rare in the portland area. They also hold outdoor yoga during the summer time. The studio is kept warm, but never too hot to where its uncomfortable to move in. The instructors are always willing to assist you in getting a pose just right, but always ask if its okay to help you out. They use essential oils for the practice at times which is great and very beneficial. Bottom line- this is a create studio and I always feel welcome when I walk through the door! read more
