I remember searching last summer for pole dancing classes and not being able to find any. This year my search led me to hustle and flow -- tucked in the west end near Reiche elementary, this is a little gem on the third floor where you can try being J. Lo for an hour, and stick around if you really like it. Heather is the primary teacher and Victoria is her teacher aid in training. Both have their own styles and both are mesmerizing to watch. Their pole classes work a bit differently than their others -- you're required to take a few intro pole classes to see if you like it and get to feel your body and how everything works, and then they can recommend you to the level 1 class. I've been wanting to try it out since a friend of mine told me how sexy it made her feel. The intro classes are easy in a sense where you're not huffing and puffing, but hard in the sense where you're using and twisting your body in ways you're probably not used to. They start you off with some warm ups -- a combination of regular stretching with yoga and warming up the joint muscles, then rotate through several pole moves to try out. I don't look good at all, but it's quite fun! The classes are small but you do share a pole with one other person, which gives you time to take a break. Some people like bringing their 10inch heels and trying it out that way, but I like sticking to the bare toes. In the summer it's slightly warm so the feet stick more (making turns have more friction). Definitely try it out, the teachers are great and never make you feel bad about messing up! read more

I chose Hustle and Flow to host my bachelorette party pole dance class and let me just say IT WAS PERFECT!! I had no idea what to expect when walking in, as I had never done a class like this before, but the pole instructor Victoria (Poletoria_Portland on IG) made us all feel so comfortable and welcome! The class was a perfect beginner course that also let us try out some pole tricks and even a sexy dance routine! I love this studio and community!! I moved to Portland and was looking for a way to meet people and get a little more fitness in my life, and oh my goodness did Hustle and Flow deliver!!! Everyone was super friendly from the start and the classes are so physically and creatively fulfilling. I highly recommend the beginner special where you can try all different kinds of classes to decide what you like! I ended up becoming obsessed with the beat drop, hustle heels, and hustle feels classes! Steph and Alyx are incredible choreographers who make learning dance so easy and fun. They also make it super comfortable for any level, because you don't have to be "perfect." As long as you feel good doing it, you are doing it right I also began taking pole classes with Heather and I am obsessed. It is really different from any other dance I've tried, but it's so rewarding. Heather works hard to make it a challenging, but safe and fun experience!!! Truly, the best part of going to HnF is that the whole class is on your side! Get ready for lots of cheering and woo-ing along with the other dancers. I've taken different classes with majority of the instructors over the past two months. Everyone at Hustle and Flow is warm and welcoming. I have enjoyed every class I've taken so far. I would recommend taking Hustlercise with different instructors. They each teach it a little different and that's part of the fun. No workout is the same unless you are doing the classes with a choreographed dance. And that changes monthly. Their pop up classes add a twisted flair to what they offer on a weekly bases. Don't be put off by my 3-star "A-OK" review. I think Hustle and Flow is a great place for people looking to have fun and move their bodies for a bit. I don't think it is for experienced work-out enthusiasts looking for a good workout. I have been to two classes: Hip Hop Aerobics and Buti Yoga. Both taught by Carla, who was great and enthusiastic. There was nothing intimidating about either class besides the names of them! The music is loud and motivating and everyone is super nice. However, I found both classes to be pretty much the same, except with the aerobics being mostly standing up, and the yoga mostly bent over. I did not sweat in either class even though I gave it my all. The next day, my hips did hurt a lot, but not really in a good way.... For $15 a pop (even though they do some package deals), I expect a great work-out. That is not really what I found here, but rather an hour of hanging with my friend listening to good music and swiveling my hips... read more

Booked a private party for 6 on a Sunday morning. Booking process wasn't excellent, but the staff was very kind and helpful. This was my first time trying yoga, others in my party take regular classes in their hometowns. I enjoyed the positions I could do (7 months pregnant) and just relaxed when I needed to take a break. Very friendly instructor, she helped with the snacks and drinks after class, played our music for us to cool down to. Only real negative for me is zero air conditioning (older building, 3rd floor, super hot day in July). read more

This little gem is definitely something you should try if you are looking for a fitness class in the Portland area. I will say, it will not be for everyone and if you are easily intimidated, just give it a try. The owner Stephanie is very nice and runs a nice business here. I took a class called sweet cheeks, which was a lot of fun. The instructor was full of energy and knew her stuff. Music was a lot of hip hop which I liked but if you are offended by bad language, there is no censored versions of the songs. Personally I didn't care but as an instructor, I know people sometimes do. It was a hot day so it was Really hot in the studio. I didn't mind it, but some of the participants seemed to be super uncomfortable. I personally like to sweat when I workout and actually wonders if I would have sweat in this class if it wasn't so hot in there. I've tried out multiple yoga studios in the area and this one definitely has the best variety. The instructors are super friendly and motivating! They offer intense workouts, fun dancing and relaxing yoga all in one places with many different class opportunities. They also offer a small discount for students. read more

I love this place, I go here almost every day. It's one of those places where you either "get it" or you don't, and you'll know after one or two classes. The buti, abs and assana, b-girl yoga and yang bang classes are very athletic and high energy, so it's easy to feel intimidated by them, but the gang of women who teach and attend the classes here are the most chill, jovial bunch so you get over it quickly. The dance classes, slow grind and Hustlercize are incredibly fun, and thematic outfits are encouraged, so that brings a level of silliness and charm to it that is really refreshing. It's really body positive and friendly here so even though when I started I could barely do half the poses and moves in a class, I kept coming back and it's had a huge impact on my fitness and overall wellness. Some tips: you don't need to bring anything, they have mats, water, blocks, towels, etc. for you for no extra charge. Be prepared for loud, bumpin' music. I like rolling into class right before it's about to start, so it pains me to think that when classes get more crowded I'll have to show up earlier, but I also want everyone to know how great this place is.
