It pains me to write this review of what used to be one of my favorite stores. And I was a sad as…read moreanyone when I saw they had to close over a year ago due to a fire. And just as happy when they announced they'd found a new space and were planning to reopen. I have to say, having visited there a few times now, I'm pretty disappointed. The new space is still downtown, but a few blocks west of their previous location. Where parking was free at that spot, it's metered at this one. When I think of all the vacant retail spaces in town, many with parking lots or at least free street parking, it leaves me perplexed. And the new space itself is so incredibly small and disjointed. It's separated into multiple, small rooms. Their inventory is but a shadow of its former self. And the prices have gone up. Wayyyy up. Perhaps most perplexing is the complete lack of classroom space, which they'd gone to so much trouble to add in their own space. Combined all of this with semi-surly, N95'd employees and well... to put it simply...I don't see the appeal in returning here anytime soon. For now, I miss the old Ragfinery and hope they turn things around.

I also found an adorable sewing basket, and some needle minders by the cutting counter. I found a scissor minder there too - never seen one of those before. So, even though it's a bit off the beaten path, Calico Creations has become a place I can rely on to grab the perfect fabric for my latest project. So I try to stop there when I'm passing near (or through) MV. They carry all of the major designers and latest lines. From modern prints by Tula Pink and Kaffe Fassett to more traditional calicos and Civil War style fabrics, you will find it here. Not to mention they have an extensive collection of solids and blender fabrics, baby fabrics, pattern books and even some pre-cuts (not many, but I'll take it). Not in a sewing mood? Find inspo from their ever-rotating samples adorning their windows and walls. On a budget? They have an impressive (and huge) sale area in the back, where fabric is $10/yard (or lower). My only criticism is their small space. They could easily fill a shop twice the size, and as a result many MANY of their bolts are sitting on the floor. They try to keep it organized, and do a pretty good job, but it bears mentioning you'll need to "file" through bolts on the floor that aren't as easy to view as the ones on the shelves.

Bobi is such a lovely lady. One time years ago, she tried to discourage me from "spending so much money" but I had found so many wonderful out of print fabrics as well as some gorgeous Japanese florals, so I was happy to spend. The selection of fabric is a little lacking for me and while they have the biggest selection of…read moresashiko items I've seen, it's very expensive. The whole store is pretty expensive really. Also, the front desk doubles as the fabric cutting station, so that can jam things up. There was one woman in front of me and she was already part way through her transaction when I got in line. It took 20 minutes for them to finish. It didn't appear to be an issue of anything other than that there was fabric to cut and the two were chatting. However, quite frankly, were it not for the fact that I drove a hour to this store specifically for the sashiko items, I would have left. By the time they were done, five more people were in line. I don't think they were used to that level of traffic, so I didn't want to put lower than three stars, especially since I accidentally left my card there and the staff emailed me and got it back to me. The staff are really very nice, I just think they aren't used to more than a few customers at a time. That being said, I'm not in a rush to get back here because my overall experience was poor. I guess the best way to put this is, look at the 3 stars as this place has potential. Hopefully they can learn to juggle customers better. Because they have some unique offerings. I think if they can widen their selection of fabric and work on getting through customers faster during high traffic times, they could really be a delightful store.

Once I saw the pictures of the store on their website I KNEW i had to go. I was happily overwhelmed at first then just a tiny bit disappointed later. Due to the volume of fabrics they carry, I was hoping to find more Rayon fabric that then one small shelf. When I'm in the area again, I will definitely stop in. We had so much fun just walking around and looking and touching all the fabrics. The owner of the shop was so pleasant to talk to and you could tell she enjoyed what she did. Look no further than Cresswell Boggs, which is practically across the street from Mallard Ice Cream, so after you are done dropping your hard earned cash at the ice cream store, take a walk over here! The stuff in the store has a lot of my favorite items by Fred, Lip Shit, Accoutrements, Douglas toys and other gag items. They've managed to assemble all the gag gifts (and some really nice ones too) under one roof. Be prepared to spend a lot of money here. The inflatable cat unicorn horn was $9.99 here and $6.99 at Archie McPhee in Seattle. But still, take into consideration that you are in a historical town and you don't have to look further than a few steps for everything zany (and not so zany). Parking is on the street and metered parking is free on weekends and holidays. I didn't know this and fed the parking meter money on a Saturday (3/25/17) until I saw the sticker on the meter. Doh!
