You know how big-city yarn stores are often so jam-packed you can barely see the yarn? Well, the great joy of visiting a smaller-town yarn store, like Apple Yarns, is that they can actually set up shop in a space big enough to do all that yarn justice! Here you'll find a solid, well-organized selection of yarns, most of which (all of which?) are made from natural fibers. There's a small sale section with some real treasures. There are some lovely, locally dyed yarns. And there is a really nice assortment of knitting accessories -- including a jar full of handi-tools (one pointy end, one hook end) that I found myself examining at the register, where the sales clerk recommended this as a must-have, super useful addition. Am I ever glad I listened to her, because it has indeed proven indispensable! As this story suggests, the real strength of Apple Yarns is the amazingly friendly, helpful staff. I really love it when people throw themselves into my quest, and the salesperson who helped me picked out the PERFECT yarn for the pattern I had in mind. When I returned a month later (thanks to their clever $10 off coupon, good for a month!) I made another great find, and had just as pleasant a visit. The staff are perfectly polite. Not particularly friendly, but not rude either. I forgot my card there and the lady was super nice about getting it back to me. Their selection is just okay. They have their own brand of yarn which runs $30 a skein at a minimum (which is a bit spendy for a store brand.) They also have some adorable kits, but my god are they expensive. They have a decent selection, but nothing particularly decadent or eye catching. Another review on here mentioned a general sterile feeling and I kind of get that too. It's just kind of bland. If you live in the Bellingham area, I think they may be worth looking at, you might vibe with it more than I did. I live about 90 minutes away though (I was just checking out as many craft stores as possible in the area) it's not worth the trek back in my case. read more

Caveat: I don't knit. That's my wife's thing. So I'm writing this review with her input, and my vantage point. My wife says this is a very nice store with very nice people. It apparently carries yarn types that she cannot find normally, and this is a plus. They wound her yarn for her, and had patterns she hadn't seen before. She says their prices were good. Male perspective: Could have used a chair for me to sit in while waiting. Had a restroom, so that's a plus. Went and sat in the car for a while. The ladies working here were pleasant, and didn't give me the weird pitying looks I've gotten in some yarn stores while waiting for my wife. read more

Not my favorite. They have some nice yarn, but on the whole a majority is overpriced. It's also kind of a sterile space. I felt like I was in a tutoring center rather than a yarn shop. Props for them having a Notorious RBG shirt, but... Meh. Located in a weird place (in a big strip mall), but the store is pretty awesome once you're inside. I went looking for Souvenir Yarn, which means something from a local creator. They were able to find me a couple different Washington dyers they stocked, and I picked up a lovely skein of Huckleberry Knits in a "pacific forest" type of colourway (think greens and a bit of blue). The space was a little oddly shaped, but there were great big windows and lovely staff members. I also loved the big knitting-related quotes on the walls. read more

I went in today on the way back from a trip to Blaine. I knew there had to be at least one good yarn store in Bellingham and sure enough, there is! The store is just east of I-5 in a fairly generic area of strip malls and low-rise office buildings. So not the historic downtown setting. But in return for that, you get a space with LOTS of windows and a nice open feeling. The store is divided roughly 2/3 inventory/store and 1/3 open knitting/gathering area. I really wished I lived in Bellingham and could hang out in that open space for a knit night (or afternoon). A previous reviewer (from 2009) mentioned all the needles were on a wall behind the register. NOT SO! That may have been true back then, but now all the needles are out on a wall readily accessible to customers. In fact I handed some needles to the cashier when a customer was asking about them. Yarn selection was nice, though I couldn't quite figure out the organizational pattern. It felt more like brands were grouped together than weights or types of fiber. It wasn't an issue though - I found some nice yarn and a great little book. Staff was super helpful and friendly and got over their shock that I was a knitter with admirable speed. They led me to the book I wound up getting and were winding my skeins even as I was finishing paying for them. I definitely plan on coming back with my daughter who loves exploring new yarn stores. read more

Really lovely little store with a huge selection of yarns. We're visiting our family and I stopped in. We had the 18 month old twin granddaughters and they were so sweet to them! They have a little area to keep children busy so I could shop so everyone had fun. Staff is around if you need them but stay back if you don't, I bought some beautiful hand dyed yarn that was done for the store - since I'm a long time knitter you really have to go the extra mile to impress me - and they certainly did. Wonderful WONDERFUL yarn store. The store is nice (with an out of the way place to sit and knit - or drop a bored husband), selection is about average (leaning toward above with local products), but the staff is amazing! We stopped at this store after seeing the sign on the interstate and it was well worth the visit. The owner chatted with me throughout my time there and made suggestions/comments as I shopped. When she discovered we were on our honeymoon she went above and beyond to make sure I'd had a good experience. We stop at multiple yarn stores every trip and this is the first review I've written. I moved from Seattle to Bellingham and needed to find a reliable yarn store in town. FOUND IT. Love the staff. Love the selection. The staff are always very helpful plus knowledgeable. I appreciate a yarn shop where the staff are always present and always willing to help answer any questions you have. They have a huge selection of bamboo crochet hooks and Seahawks colored yarns. Why, oh why, Apple yarns, do you feel the need to keep your needles on the wall behind the register? Are you scared the middle-aged yuppie ladies of the Barkley and Silver Beach neighborhoods are going to shove them into their bras, ala Perry Ferrell in the "Been Caught Stealin" video? I honestly doubt it. And that's a bummer, because I NEED to touch the needles prior to purchase, as I am ever so fussy about yarn slippage and slidage and proper grip for gauging needs. The sales people are a tad bit pushy and perky for my likes, but it makes sense given the yuppster haven the store is situated in. The yarn selection is pretty decent, but there has never been a scrap in there that has made me want to dive head-long into the cubby on the shelf and revel in it's plush / alpacy-y / sinfully luxuriousness or salivate over its dyelot hues. Plus, no diva yarn? My little fat donut of super soft technicolor is no where to be seen here, que bummer. I suppose they'd special order it, but what would the point be when the other yarn store carries it? So. Good store for beginners and middle aged folk, not so good for yarn-fondling skein harlots, but the basics are there. read more

I have only purchased via the internet, however I must say my experience with their customer support and pricing was outstanding. I received everything very quickly. All the items were well represented and I received a personal phone call and follow-up email because one of the items was out-of-stock and they wanted to know if I would accept a replacement. I noticed after I received the shipment, that the replacement was slightly higher priced, but I was only charged the original price item. That I call excellent service and I very gladly recommend this company. I live nowhere near, but if I'm ever in the area, I'm definitely going to stop in! read more

As an avid knitter, I frequent all yarn shops in Whatcom and Skagit counties. Last month, my knitting buddy and I bought over $150 worth of yarn (on sale, even!) for a large project. The man who helped us was very knowledgeable and most gracious. After using 2 skeins of the 4 I bought and disliking the way it was turning out, I went back to return the two UNUSED skeins of yarn and buy something else for the project. The woman who helped me was brusque and unfriendly, and refused to return one of the unused skeins because the label was torn. Not torn off, but an edge was ripped along the seamline of the label. The label had not been removed and replaced, nor had the end of the yarn been unearthed. I cannot tell you the number of times I have purchased yarn or notions from other establishments that have been stapled back together, or taped. It does not affect the quality of the product, and she could clearly see that this yarn was in its original packaged state, save the tear on the label. I will not be doing business with a place that has such a ridiculous policy. read more

They have local yarns and they have a great little group of knitters who gather to chat and knit. I was new to the area and felt very welcome here. I am so tickled that I found Apple Yarns - lovely, well-lit, nicely organized mid-small local yarn store! The selection of yarns is delightful, with a good variety of both what I call basic, "go-to" yarns, in every weight and color selections, to some wonderfully fresh new yarns with texture, dyed in many styles. Also, I was looking for a specific pattern, that Apple Yarns didn't carry, and the sales person looked on Ravelry and searched the internet, so that they could order it for me, or I could for myself. I found a good variety of notions, including lace and sock needles in several brands. I like the fact the their knitting needles are right next to the sales counter - I knock the durn things down every store I go to, but the sales lady deals with that here. They also can go directly to the one I'm looking for. The store is in a delightful location, easy to get to from the freeway, with some lovely little shops in the same mall. It is so terrific to have this store in Bellingham, and it complements and works beautifully with the other local yarn stores in our area. In addition, they have a nice area for fiber artists to sit and visit, or sit and knit, or sit and read magazines and books ~ pretty cool. The sales people actually knit and/or crochet, so can help with the odd pesky pattern interpretation! YAY! A grand place to get perked up, even if I'm not out buying yarn for my yarn bordello! read more

I was visiting from Canada, actually not that far and came to check out Apple Yarns, they were wonderful with getting me started on my first pair of socks. While knitting my second pair on a plane, I had tucked the pattern I purchased from them in the seat pocket in front of me as it was at eye level, and I left it on the plane! Argh! I contacted them and they were more than fantastic about replacing it by sending me a link to it from the originator (and i do believe it cost them to do this). Absolutely fantastic customer service! I have to note that this is one of the few LYS that I don't get clostraphobic in, it is bright and has a beautiful layout, they also wound my yarns for me .... I'll def be back! read more

Apple Yarns is the best. I don't agree with the "diva's" comment here. Apple Yarns has absolutely no problem with anyone stepping up to their needle rack and digging in. They are there because (have you noticed?) most of the store is WINDOW, so that is where they have to be located. The store is beautiful, well-lit. Andrea, the owner, rocks. She recently put on a bake sale to benefit Whatcom Middle School and donated lots of money from her store to help the teachers who lost all their materials in that fire. Plus, the store is great. She's got everything you need and her staff is so helpful. I have witnessed with my own two eyes people with no shame whatsoever walking into Apple Yarns with yarn they obviously did not purchase there and asking the staff for help in knitting with it. The staff assumes a friendly smile as they help them anyway. This store is a great example of why we should all be supporting local businesses. They offer a service we will not find if we all decide that the garbage you can purchase at Wal Mart or JoAnn is a better deal than the good stuff you can buy when someone actually cares about their customers. read more

This store has a great look, and carries a nice selection of yarns. But BUYER and CLASS -TAKER BEWARE. If your working a project, the owner will promise they'll have no issue getting the yarn from the supplier to finish your project. (They just want to make the sale) When they fail to get the yarn or at times fail to try. They won't answer or return your calls, and when you finely go in to talk face to face they treat you as if they're hearing about the request for the first time. In the last 3 years, they've done this to me twice. One of the owners mother (Francine) teaches knitting, works the floor and cash register. I took a painful, poorly organized class from her, the final class turned into a group class with new numerous people I'd never met, and she sat us in the entry way around a tiny end table, I felt ripped off and I couldn't believe when I asked, if I got stuck on the project we hadn't finish during the class, "could I stop in with a question"; They said "If you' bought the yarn from us, you can." I thought , "I just bought yarn and paid 90 dollars for a class, I'm not even out the door and that's your answer?!" When ever I'm in the shop, Francine (who I took the class from) acts like she's never seen me before, and she tries to sell me old yarn; she interrupts my shopping and acts put out when I'm not interest in what she wants me to look at. One day I spent 150 dollars and Francine stuck my yarn in a plastic bag they'd received a yarn order in. "Thanks Francine, have a nice day." read more

I really enjoy this yarn store. Instead of encouraging people to buy just one or two skeins of super-priced novelty yarn that will probably never get knit up into a project, this is a store for people who actually make things! Large selection of sock yarn, and plenty of Cascade 220 in stock, in many colors, to buy enough for an adult cardigan. Decent selection of needles, and knowledgeable staff. The layout is conducive to shopping for yarn combinations, and I got good advice about that too. When I bought a skein of yarn here, I was told they would help me with my pattern if I needed it. Well, I went back today with a question about how to interpret the instructions. The woman who was asked to help me stated right off the bat that she would look at my pattern, but "if you want me to sit down and show you how to do it, I advise you to sign up for a private lesson." She spoke down to me in a loud and impatient tone of voice. In the end, she told me to "just knit it and if it doesn't work out, you've wasted, what, 20 minutes?" I left feeling an inch tall. I will never go back to that shop again. read more

Ordered some yarn via email and asked to have it mailed to me as I am in Canada and don't get down to Bellingham that often. Several weeks passed and no yarn, but I got my Visa bill. I was charged $18.99 shipping for something that should go for $4.56 (1st class international). I queried the charge and Andrea apologized and said she would refund it straight away. A week later and nothing, I emailed again. She said she would do it within the hour. Another week goes by and no refund. No yarn either. Several emails go unanswered until I sent a rude one. She apologized again and said she would send more yarn free of charge. More? She only had three and I bought them all. I finally filed a dispute with my credit card company and got my money back. Never did get my yarn or the promised freebie. I wasn't a frequent shopper, but spent quite a bit there when I did go in. Not anymore. I'll take my business to a shop that is honest with their customers. read more
