It is SO hard to find upscale vegetarian restaurants anywhere so when I find one - I HAVE to try it…read moreand I am so glad we went here. It was the perfect way to end our trip. the restaurant does not have a menu. Instead they just serve you a 'surprise' which is basically some recipes that they may have planned for the week. I believe the meals change frequently. If you have any allergies you should tell them ahead of time. They served us a 3 course meal with wine and it was pricey but not unreasonable. I think it was around $130 total for both of us. I will say that you need to come hungry because three courses is a lot of food! You can box it up if you would like - you just have to ask. The service here was a little slow. Our reservations were at 7:30 and we left a little after 9. Maybe it's because they want their guests to really relax and enjoy their food? Idk, we were not in a hurry so we were fine. The food here is really good. When we went it was a mix of multiple areas (they had some tastes of Europe, some asia, some south america ect). It is also run by a husband and wife team which I love. Small businesses truly make the best food because it will always taste homemade. The ambiance here is also very intimate and is great for a romantic date. I loved eating here. If you are a vegetarian (im sure they also accommodate vegans too) foodie, you have to stop by here if you get a chance!

Lucky for us, we found Betty's Not only were they open on a Sunday ( which, here in Amsterdam, is harder to find than you might think.....& especially difficult during the summer / vacation months ) PLUS they're a full-on vegetarian restaurant! Welcomed with the loveliest glass of wine - we ended up getting a bottle it was so delish. Advised they were celebrating their 26th Anniversary & were offering a set menu for the evening - sounded perfect for us Started w/ a tomato & sweet potato soup w fried kale - loved the flavor combination & the crispy kale was a wonderful texture layer Paired w/ the soup was a bread-basket & plate with: Coconut & cashew nut chutney w/ chickpeas w chili, roasted tomatoes & sweet peppers, potato & eggplant. My favorite was the coconut & the Mr loved the potato & eggplant. We both devoured the chickpea & chilis 2nd course. More small tastes that packed a lot of flavor - split pea polenta; ratatouille; goat cheese w onion jam; beets with maple syrup & balsamic caviar; pumpkin & coconut; artichokes & tomatoes 3rd course dessert.......we were walked over to this huge dessert cooler & given a brief description of their cake selection. The Mr chose a Maple Walnut Pie & I chose the Chocolate & Caramel Torte. Ended up preferring each other's desserts so happily shared both - which I never do! Waddled out of there happy & full & thankful for the long walk back to the hotel

Fast forward a few years and now I'm delighted to accompany them to vegan restaurants such as Meatless District in Amsterdam, NL. The food was exquisite as was the service. I'm now obsessed with watermelon sashimi. I prefer this vegan bitterballen to the traditional because I didn't like the texture of the meat inside. I feel the dutch really like pureed meat. The mushroom bitterballen was so delicious as was everything else. The braised artichoke was just ok. Nothing to write home about but nothing wrong with it. It's just that everything else was so unique including the desserts. Lovely ambiance in the restaurant. I give my experience a 4 overall for the artichoke and I must mention the bathroom. This is more of a Dutch thing than anything else. Gender neutral bathrooms are cool. We Americans don't see that a lot. The problem is the individual stall was up a flight of stairs and so small that I couldn't even sit on the toilet and then there was nothing to pull myself up to get out the position I had gotten myself into. It was awkward. This stall needs a bar or something to help those of us who are not as able as we used to be. I'd go eat here again to try more of their dishes.

A friend recommended Yerba and I made a reservation. As a lactose intolerant person, if the restaurant is vegan then I know for sure that I can have dessert! The vibe is simple, cozy, minimalist, and peaceful. My server had a lovely, positive attitude and she was very knowledgeable about the menu. The main issue is narrowing down what to order, because *everything* looks stellar. Chef Walter is very involved in the dining experience from start to finish. Not only is he behind the pass at times, but he also makes sure to come out and explain dishes personally to customers. As a newcomer to the Netherlands, I was thrilled to have him talk to me about where the tomatoes are grown, for example. I can taste the care that Chef puts into the texture and creativity of each dish. I chose to have a 5 course tasting with one wine pairing. But the course that blew my mind was dessert- I am normally a chocolate fiend, but my server convinced me that the blueberry ice cream would be mind-blowing. And, yes, she was right- the blueberry ice cream dessert was unthinkably good, and I couldn't believe that he was able to coax aubergine into a dessert with such finesse. One tip for visitors who may not be used to this difference- make sure to ask for tap water (not still water). I wasn't aware that I'd be charged 6 euros for water, I told my server that it was a misunderstanding and I just wanted tap water but she didn't correct it. Thank you, Chef- I'll be back.

Absolutely spectacular meal from start to finish at Bolenius…read more As part of our vacations, we like to dine at a michelin star restaurant for at least one meal. I am a little bit restricted by my vegetarian diet which is what ultimately directed us to Bolenius as they have a plant-based option. If you're visiting Amsterdam as a tourist, it's a bit of a trek from the city center but pretty quick and easy to get there by the metro, which was our mode of transportation. Our reservation was at 7pm but it was such an incredible experience, we literally did not leave the place until, I want to say like 10:30pm. The interior decor is unique and vibes with the brand pretty well. The service was excellent from start to finish. It is definitely a team effort as we interacted with many different servers who were all kind, wonderful, and welcoming. Everything was thoroughly explained to us. I went the vegetarian tasting menu route and GF did the standard tasting menu. We also accepted most of the additional add ons like wine pairing, their recommended beet dish, and cheese selection at the end of the meal. I was grateful to see a variety of ingredients used for the vegetarian menu instead of just the standard mushrooms 100 times over and over again that is common at other establishments. They also employed many different textures and innovative presentations to the dishes including the foam, which I'm pretty sure is required for a restaurant to get a star, but also things like a shaved and latticed ASPARAGUS dish. The dishes were, as you would probably expect, like works of art. Like I said above, I have somewhat of a history dining at Michelin starred restaurants but I think it's safe to say that this was the best experience I have ever had and cannot recommend it enough.

There was no attempt made by the staff to rectify this in any way, whatsoever. I understand that these things happen. Any attempt at a genuine apology would have prevented me from writing this review. There wasn't an offer of a beverage, or any discount to the meal. They could have chosen not to charge us for the two bottles of water. There was an optional course ordered which I attempted to cancel (naturally, I lost my appetite after seeing a live insect crawling in the second course), which they informed me that they could not cancel without charging me. They could have offered the extra course for free. There was the option to add a spoon of caviar to another dish for extra charge. I explicitly asked whether that could be on the house, you know, given the aforementioned insect on a previous course. Not only was this denied, the server did not even bother to acknowledge the comment. Lastly, when the check arrived, I informed them that there was zero attempt made to rectify the mistake of the insect. All we got was an apology that the staff was not able to pick up on the signals of our dissatisfaction- as if the bug, the request to cancel the optional dish free of charge, the willful ignorance over the caviar, and my complaint after getting the bill were not enough. Even without the insect incident, the food was phenomenally subpar for this city. My recommendation would be to never visit this restaurant. The food is terrible, the conditions are unsanitary, and the service is appalling.
