The food took some time, even though we were the only party at the time that we ordered, but you can tell that it is made of fresh and with love. As someone who enjoys eating flavorful meals, but is also very conscious of healthy choices, I was very grateful that they had grilled chicken curry option since it normally comes fried only, and that you could opt for brown rice instead of white rice. My chicken curry dish was so hearty and flavorful, the curry is housemade and the chicken was very tender We also ordered a chicken Katsu Bento, which was both juicy yet perfectly crisp. It comes with a little bite of soba noodles and a bite of macaroni and that small salad . Order at the counter , and there's a handful of indoor tables The tonkotsu ramen was also delicious - came with two super huge slabs of juicy pork belly and the broth was scrumptiously rich . Glad we ended up here for lunch !

The first couple of times was great and then it started to fall off later on. Including the texture and flavor not hitting as hard and the fact that it's closed on weekends now. Impossible for non wagies to go there, meaning I can't have any when I'm there on weekend vacation I guess, but with how everything closes early and is dying in Bay Area, I'm somehow not surprised. Very tiny spot and not much seating, so you're either taking it to go or you're praying there's a chair and a counter that's free. No big deal since I've been to other Japanese curry places like this. I've had a mix bag where the katsu was deliciously crispy and moist on the inside and days where the meat inside is dry, even drenched in curry. Hot curry sauce is Japanese hot, so it has spices in it but not spicy at all. The workers do their best for the lunch rush, so that's a plus at least. Overall, it was okay, but man the times sure have changed.

I have to…read moresay after walking up the winding and hilly streets of SF, this warming and comforting curry really hit the spot! I want to preface that this restaurant is simple, no frills, and looks a little outdated when you walk in. However, the service was very friendly and the menu is pretty extensive! This location offers Japanese-style curry dishes from chicken katsu curry to fried fish curry and even offers vegetarian curry dishes as well. I also love that you can pick from a list of toppings to add to your curry. Not to mention, you can choose the spice level of your curry. Volcano offers a spice level of 1 (mild) - 4 (volcano). I ordered the fried shrimp curry with the addition of a potato croquette, spice level 2 (medium). I was STARVING and was tempted to add more toppings but didn't want to go too crazy so I could enjoy the curry itself! I also ordered a cup of miso soup on the side. I'm going to be totally honest, I was just expecting an average bowl of curry but boy was I wrong... 5/5! The food came out piping hot, to-go style, in white plastic containers. The shrimp was golden, light, crispy, and tender. The potato croquette was super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I was amazed that none of the fried items were greasy whatsoever. The curry was thick, hearty, comforting and had a slight kick of spice. Accompanied with a mound of steamy, white rice, this dish was delicious and the portions very generous! The miso soup was light, umami, and broth-y. It really helped to cut the richness of the curry and fried items. I'm so happy I got to try this place and will be back to try their katsu sandos next time!

Parked easily on the side street, walked in around 3:30 in the afternoon, no hassle. The place has an authentic Japanese cafe feel, the kind where the menu has things you don't typically find at your average sushi spot. I had my eye on the sandos, specifically the Chicken Katsu Sando, but landed on the Spicy Tuna Don instead. Good call. Spicy yellowfin tuna tartare over well-seasoned sushi rice, topped with sesame, furikake, green onions, with a little radish and cucumber on the side. The tuna was very fresh, the rice was on point. Service was quick and polite - they even have an outside window for takeout. One nice detail: a neat dollop of wasabi is pasted along the inside wall of the bowl, which is a clean way of letting you control exactly how much heat you want to mix in. Tasteful presentation, but don't let that fool you. It has a legitimate kick, so calibrate accordingly. Paired it with their Honjozo dry sake cup, which was a nice complement to the meal and exactly the right call for a mid-afternoon bite. The sandos looked great on other tables and I fully intend to go back for the Chicken Katsu Sando - and then go try the wine bar next door to it. which was pretty tempting.

The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy inside, with a nice light seasoning that didn't overpower the dish. The vibe felt cozy and laid-back--nothing fancy, but definitely the kind of place you'd come back to when you're craving something reliable and filling. It has almost a thick gravy like texture and often is dark brown in color. I've had Japanese curry in Japan as well as around the SF bay area and I would say the japanese curry here is average at best. The texture is a little lumpy to be honest and there isn't a tremendous amount of curry flavor. Today, we ordered a couple of items off the special menu - Kaki Curry (oysters) and Shiso Mentaiko Cream Spaghetti. The Kaki Curry came with six fried oysters, some rice, potato salad, and a dab of sauce for the fried oysters. The fried oysters were fresh and crunchy. Overall, it was satisfying but nothing spectacular. The Shiso Mentaiko Cream Spaghetti is a cream sauce based pasta dish with roe, shiso leaves, and nori seaweed. It's an interesting twist to your popular spaghetti dish so the flavor profiles were interesting. The dish was creamy and the nori and roe brought some unami flavor. Between the two dishes, I enjoyed this one slightly more even those this place is a "curry" spot. Dish comes with a japanese cabbage salad and miso soup which tasted pretty standard.
