Under most circumstances, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at Crash again. Generally pleasant, clean and full of swagger, it's a boutique, bespoke place in every sense. Perhaps the highest compliment is that the property's marketing actually sets the tone extremely well; the website is worth checking out and reflects the property fairly. Crash doesn't position itself as high luxury, because it's not. It's also not a bare-bones budget house or like most mid-tier, chain properties. Think of it as an experience and check in with the expectation of a party (or at least be open to a little bit of one). Otherwise, you'll be missing out on what's truly on offer.
The hotel's best features (aside from its location close to the arena and mall) are the energy and familiar uniqueness. The vibe is irreverent, casual and youthful, as if the hotel's the brainchild of a trio of bros who missed the frat and decided to go into business together in order to spread the good times. From the lobby onward, the hotel isn't like any that comes to mind, but I wouldn't describe it as quirky or weird either. The design isn't kitschy or cluttered, instead blending art, rich woods, Edison bulbs, old-school video games, posters and subway tiles into a hip, mildly industrial look that felt Instagram-ready. The combination of look and attitude definitely felt like a visit to the coolest of off-campus apartments, but the operations were fairly standard (the quick check-in spiel, check-out time, credit card holds, etc; room amenities cover the expected bases).
A few unexpected touches that made my stay better included the above-average Malin+Goetz toiletries and quick WiFi with a simple password (versus an overly complicated portal). A comfortable-enough king mattress, solid shower pressure and 'hangover cure' coffee from the lobby added up to a nicer visit than I was expecting from a place with mini bars featuring Jager and Red Bull, and dark carpets to hide any party fouls.
Notes:
* There are quite a few different types of room, from hostel-style to suites. (https://crashhotel.com/rooms/).
* The property is available to book directly or via Hotels.com (among other third parties). When I booked, there was a promo code (LOYALTY25) for 25% off of directly booked room rates.
* There's an on-site liquor store, a club and bars (plural). If you didn't know, now you know. read more
