Love this office! I've been a patient here for 5 years and there's a reason why I haven't left. Dr. Crane is very kind, thorough, and tends to have the latest and greatest in eyewear. The selection of glasses is great. I picked a men's frame and they bent the frame slightly around the ears to keep them in place better and have done adjustments for free when they get looser with time. The same frames were damaged twice and they gave me an amazing discount to replace the frames. One year I didn't want to replace my frames so they gave me a discount to just get lenses. I was also allowed to order any frame to make into sunglasses. Christy, Charlemagne, and the rest of the office are seriously the best. You can tell they want to help you and that's pretty rare now-a-days. read more

Went in yesterday to try and get my glasses fixed. The lab tech, Howie, was the most unfriendly person I have ever encountered. I usually only write good reviews. I would not tell any of my friends or family to go here. How businesses like this survive is beyond me. They just missed out on a sale too, since I was planing to get prescription sunglasses next week. GO TO PEARLE OPTICAL INSTEAD, at least they are friendly. read more

I'm very pleased with the care I receive from Crane Optical. I've been going there for around seven or eight years. The doctor is pleasant, patient, and thorough. He answers questions well, and helps me relax. The rest of the staff are helpful and polite. In the past I've been able to receive unscheduled eyeglass frame adjustments or a new cleaning cloth for free, and I appreciate the trial contact lenses. This isn't a megastore optical center. They don't have 5,000 frames to try on in the store, but they have a nice selection. I've always found something that works. On my last visit, they suggested I look online for better rates to help me save money. The hours could be considered limited, but I've never had trouble making an appointment. There is only one doctor, but there are some evening hours available. I prefer supporting small, independent businesses. This one has operated in Ferndale for decades. I see no reason to look for another provider. read more

Dr. Crane and his staff were very kind and knowledgeable. I've been having a lot of problems with my eyes over the past few months (redness, dryness, photosensitivity, eye pain), and was feeling like I might have to give up my contact lenses and make a reluctant switch to glasses. I saw an ophthalmologist for these issues previously. He spent only about two minutes with me, prescribed antibiotic drops, and said that I needed to give my eyes a short break from the contacts. That didn't work and he didn't. Luckily, Dr. Crane took the time to listen to my concerns and offered several other suggestions. He also had answers to all of my questions. After having visited Doctor Crane's office with my father, I can honestly say he and his staff really care about their patients. They offer an extensive selection of frames and lenses. Patients are seen and given answers very quickly by a friendly and professional staff. The interior is clean and it's situated in downtown Ferndale so, one has many options for things to do before and after their visit! I am a new patient to Dr. Crane's office in 2013, and I plan to be a patient as long as he and his office staff are there to provide the level of excellent patient and customer care I've received over the last few months. I was referred to Dr. Crane by two unrelated friends in the area, both long-time clients of Dr. Crane's. Since my very positive experience at Crane Optical, I have referred three close friends to his office, two of whom have already gone and are satisfied as well. Dr. Crane''s eye exam was certainly the most thorough I've ever received, and as I have earned my living reading and writing (in the last 30 years much of the time doing both on computer), my eyes are very important to me. Good eye care was my priority in finding a new optometrist. From Dr. Crane, I received the very best contact prescription I've ever gotten (I've been given contact scripts from 3 other optometrists in the past). Wonderful to have the world in such sharp focus! I have also purchased 3 pairs of glasses as well as one pair of readers from Crane Optical, and I couldn't be happier with any one of them! Crane Optical has a great selection of frames! In the past, I've selected frames from SEE, Pearle Vision, and whatever the Pearle Vision office at Woodward and 14 Mile Rd. was before it was Pearle Vision. I'm happier with my choices from Crane's Optical than any of those. Lots of compliments when colleagues catch me in either of my new pairs of computer glasses (I got one to wear w/my contacts--a wonderful suggestion from Dr. Crane--and another pair to wear without contacts, which is what I've done in the past). Dr. Crane's office staff--Sandy and Charmaine--are wonderfully helpful and supportive, efficient and friendly! Both of them also were helpful in evaluating possible frame choices, a real bonus. Over the course of the time between having my eye exam at Crane's Optical and picking up my fourth pair of glasses, I had a contagious skin infection travel to and affect one of my eyes. Dr. Crane referred me to an ophthalmologist, so that my care would be covered by my health insurance, and his office staff was very understanding and helpful in rescheduling my glasses-fitting appointments. At one time I lived in Ferndale and I'd always been curious about the Crane Optical building, which appears wonderfully retro from the outside (according to their website, the business was established in 1949). Just came in today as a new patient and am very happy. The Doctor is very nice and polite and the staff is wonderful as well. He thoroughly explained what he found to be wrong with my eyes and answered all my questions. The eye glass prescription he decided I needed seems like it will be perfect. Even though their frame selection might not be the largest I still think that they have a great deal to choose from and a lady informed me that there are more she can order offline if I like a particular brand (also they frequently get new ones in). I still might get my glasses from a "trendy" looking place I am going to look into in Berkley although they do have some super cute Kate Spade glasses at Cran optical (I also receive 20% since I have no insurance coverage) . I would recommend this eye place to anyone for the staffs friendly personalities and great service! read more

I went to this optometrist because he was on our insurance list. I remember going there when I was little but since then the son has taken over the business. I live in the same area but was about to head off to college about an hour away when I went in for the first appointment. The doctor was very arrogant. He really didn't want to listen to what I had to say about how sensitive my eyes were and how I've had a hard time being fit with contacts because I have astigmatism. For a "specialist in hard-to-fit lenses" he had a hard time finding what was right for me. He also had NO equipment for measuring eyes; he did it all by eye and a ruler... which may have been why he got my contacts wrong three times. The first set of contacts he tried was Air Optics. He had some trial pairs in the office and gave me a pair even though "these are not the right prescription and you will not be able to see out of them." He ordered me a 6month supply (even though he tried to get me to order 12months) and so I opened them to try them because my trials were wrong. Wore them for two weeks and they didn't fit. I couldn't see anything. Took them back and he ridiculed me for opening the boxes. Doesn't make sense to me because he told me the trials were wrong so how would I know if the prescription worked before I opened the boxes? He took the boxes and gave me another trial pair "that was not right" and I asked him to get me a trial of the RIGHT ones before he ordered the whole boxes this time. Now I went up to school and he mailed them to me. I tried these for another two weeks and these were even worse. I called and they told me to come in on a weekend. I don't come home over school term but I did because I wanted my contacts. Went in and got another eye exam (he puts the contacts in your eyes which I don't like other people touching my eyes like that and when he tries 6 different ones it kind of bugs your eyes.) He said the prescription was right but we should try another brand of lens. My mom picked these up for me and brought them to me. Again I tried these for a month and still couldn't see right. The right eye kept slipping down my eyeball every time I blinked which means it didn't fit right. Now I'm into my final exams - three months after the first appointment. So I waited until I got home to go back. Today I went back and said what was wrong. They again complained that I opened the boxes even though I wasn't given any trials for this last brand. The assistant went to talk to the doctor and came back with a refund check for the $150+ lenses I bought. Every time I went there, they would not give me any of the prescriptions for the lens or contacts. When I asked I was given the WRONG contact prescription because it didn't match the boxes and the assistant just huffed and puffed about it. If I don't want to buy my lens from you, I don't have to. I could honestly get them cheaper online! I paid for the eye exam and the contact exam. But I didn't get the right contacts or a refund for that. All of the services were prices so high that I paid more with insurance at this doctor than I have at Costco without insurance. I did get a pair of glasses from them. The glasses work fine but all of his frames were all overpriced. I would suggest going somewhere like Costco. Also, the one assistant lady was rude and always walked away when you were trying to explain anything. I'm calling my insurance company because I don't think its right that this guy is on there. Now I have to pay for another eye exam. read more

I had my daughter find a review page and sign me up for an account so I could say something I've wanted to say for a few years. I just went back to visit last week and it reminded me again about all of you over at Crane. Everyone here is always so pleasant and makes you feel like you are important, regardless of how much money you spend. I haven't had insurance in so many years so I am really behind on my glasses and having any updates. I moved to the area about 5 years ago and have have not been able to afford a new pair of glasses but the repair guy at this place never minds me coming in to have arms replaced or any tweaking that was needed. I also enjoy the pleasant conversations with the other ladies in the office. I've had some really hard times in the past but things are looking better and I can't wait until I can go to Crane and actually buy some new glasses and lenses.
