Referred by my eye doctor from LensCrafter Sommerset, Clavenna Vision Institute was recommended to double check my eyes and the results will be the basis for a second opinion. Thankful for the referral that will help save my eyes from blindness. Arrived 15 minutes early. The receptionist were friendly. Was given paperwork to sign for new patient. I had to show my driver's license and insurance card. Forgot my previous eye results, the receptionist called LensCrafter to send information to the clinic. After input, my name was called by a technician or optometrist. Showed me to a room where they have the equipment to gauge my vision. Voluntarily had my eyes dilated to check pressure. The eye drops never bothered me. No signs of allergic reaction to the dye. Advised effect last 3-4 hours. After a series of eye test, my referred eye doctor came in the room. Gave a firm handshake and explained briefly the procedures I have to take. Results are too early to confirm so I was advised to come back a few weeks from today. Check out was fast. The cashier told me that the charges will be sent on a later date. It will take some time for them to evaluate how much is the total cost of the procedures. It depends on my insurance coverage. Hopefully, I won't have to spend more than I earn. Same person scheduled my next appointment. Gave me a small card noted with the date and time. Private parking at the back of the building. Clinic is located at the 2nd Floor. Elevator available. The lobby looks inviting. Hundreds of designer frames to choose from. Appointment necessary. Free WiFi. Restroom located outside. New patient. Appointment time 930am. Was out 11am. Based on my experience today, I would prefer to have my annual eye exam here at Clavenna Vision Institute. I have been a patient at Clavenna for a few years now for routine eye exams and updated frames, and I have always liked coming here. However they have really stepped it up and have been doing a great job adhering to guidelines and being flexible with their practice due to COVID. I have been to so many places this year that are struggling to find a way to make guidelines and screenings easy and painless, but Clavenna has really figured it out. I have been here three times in the past month, and check in and protocols were a breeze every time. Upon arriving, you call their number where someone always picks up quickly to screen you for COVID symptoms before being able to come up. The first time I had to wait a few minutes in my car, but the past two times I was allowed up right away. Once getting into the office, someone takes your temperature and directs you where to go. Everyone is masked and every waiting room is spaced out so you are not close to any other patients. For optical you are no longer able to try on frames yourself, instead they choose for you and you can point to ones that look nice from your seat. You can try them on, and then they sanitize them before any other guest can touch them and put them on their face. For something so hands-on, it was a very painless process and I felt comfortable the whole time. read more

I was in Clavenna Vision Institute office for eye exam on March 17, 2023. Dr. Fitzgerald did the eye examination for me and I was so happy with the way he did it and explained to me what's going on and what to expect in the future since I am 68 years old now. However few things went wrong after that made me feel angry and insulted. Let me start with the lady who did the vision test for me. When she was trying the lenses on me I kept telling her that I am not seeing clearly and she kept saying no worries, no worries. When we went out of the room I told my wife I am really concerned about the prescription because the exam was not accurate and the lady was not confident about what she was doing. I went out directly to their eye glasses shop and picked up a new frame that was priced for $200. The young lady there told me that my Medicare and BCBS insurances cover vision, but my copay will still be $479. When I questioned why is my copay that high, she said the cost of the frame with my prescription lenses is around $1100. But she assured me that it's guaranteed and if it didn't fit I can return it and replace it. She told me that she will call me or text me whenever it's ready. I waited two weeks, but when nobody called I went back to Clavenna office to find that the frame is ready and the young lady kept saying that she texted me. Reviewing my phone and text messages I didn't find any text. To make the long story short ,I tried the glasses and wasn't comfortable with it at all, but she convinced me that I need few days to get used to the progressive lenses. I was determined to make it work after all this cost. I kept the glasses on, but didn't dare to drive my car from day one. After a week or two I started wearing them while driving, but very uncomfortably, until the day I hit the side of my garage door. Then I knew something is wrong and decided not to drive wearing the glasses and just use it when I am watching TV or in the theater. We were in the Opera house few days later and when I was going down the stairs I couldn't see the last step and fell on the ground, landing on my left toes and knee. It was very painful and I was very concerned because I had a heart bypass surgery and an artery was removed from my left leg. Next day my toes were bruised together with my left knee. I was certain this time that the glasses were not right and I was only waiting for a disaster to happen. I took them off, called Clavenna office and asked for an appointment. I was given an appointment on Friday May 5 at 9:15 to see Dr. Bianca Bilek. Dr. Bilek was extremely nice and knowledgeable. She did a new vision test for me and realized that her diagnoses is different than the prescription glasses I am wearing, and I confirmed to her that I wasn't very happy with the lady that did the vision test for me to start with, and she told me that the lady is not working there any more. I also told her that I am back to use my old $25 over the counter reading glasses which I am hundred times more comfortable with. Dr Bilek went ahead and explained to me how progressive lenses work, and after my bad experience she recommended that I change the glasses and have only ordinary lens for the far sight, and keep using my over the counter reading glasses. I went out to the glasses counter again and presented the new prescription. The young lady there said that she will replace the $1100 progressive lenses I have with regular ones, but there will be no refund. When I tried to tell her that this is not fair, you charged my Medicare for over one thusand dollars and I personally paid $479 and now I am getting glasses that are less than half the price. She said well, you can talk to my manager. She went and called the manager Michelle who also was not helping, but promised to ask Dr. Fitzgerald and get back to me. I waited until Tuesday May 9 and when she didn't call me back, I called the office asking to talk to Dr. Fitzgerald. The receptionist informed me that he was not present in the office and that she knew about the returning glasses. I left a message with her asking Dr. Fitzgerald to call me back. Five minutes later Michelle, the office manager, called me and said that she talked to the doctor and he refused to refund the copay because they already billed my insurance and they will not refund any copay. When I insisted to talk to the doctor she said Dr. Fitzgerald doesn't own the place and he doesn't want to discuss that. When I asked, but I am his patient and I need to talk to my doctor, she said you are not his patient and you only came once and this is the office policy. I then asked if the office policy states that first time patients are not considered patients even if they were doctors, and they have no right to talk to Dr Fitzgerald? I can't express how amazed I am at this Institute. My husband had gone to Dr Clavenna so I flew back from California to have him remove very bad cataracts ( at my age). The office was professional and courteous. The night before my surgery the Dr called to see if I had an more questions or concerns! I went in for Lasik and they don't have the appropriate equipment to do the job so I was sent to get a checkup at Beaumont. That scan showed I might have a problem but instead of the doctor calling to speak with me about a medical issue they had a scheduler call to tell me the bad news with no answers to give other than I had to go back for another scan. after I asked I finally got to speak with Dr. Fitzgerald who didn't give me much information and just said I was to go to another appointment. When I got to that appointment the doctor didn't need to see me again, it turned out that doctor only needed to look at the scans which had already been done to know whether I was a candidate for the surgery. Now I have taken three afternoons off (for which I don't get paid). once I was approved for the procedure I had to call several times (three messages were left with the scheduler) just to talk with someone about next steps. I have never worked so hard to spend my money. when they finally did call they were not apologetic but tried to put the blame on me for calling after hours. I did leave one of the messages after hours but the others were left during regular hours and I don't think blaming the customer is a great business decision. If they care so little about the customer why would I have them touch my eyes. read more

I went to Dr Clavenna for my LASIK done on 5/4/2012. I went to him because my father had his LASIK done maybe 8 years prior with Dr Clavenna and was happy with the results, and he seemed the most qualified doctor around town after doing research due to their up to date machines and customVue technology. My eyes were one of the worst he had seen and also a high astigmatism, and going into it he told me I probably wouldn't get 20/20 the first time around due to the severity of my correction. The procedure was painless and everyone was very professional, I had the procedure done on Thursday and came back to work on Monday (I work in an office at a computer all day). After a few months it was clear I wouldn't have 20/20. I was closer to 20/40. I needed reading and driving glasses. I decided to get the enhancement done one year later. He did it for free the second time because he does enhancements within a year if you don't get 20/20 the first time and are unsatisfied. Unfortunately he could not get my eye flaps back up when we went to do LASIK again, which happens rarely if they heal over too much. We jointly decided to proceed with LASEK (prk) surface oblation which is another option if this happens. I was pretty upset and worried during the procedure due to the complication, but Dr Clavenna and his OR staff did an amazing job to calm me down and they were again very professional and helpful. The procedure then went along as planned and 5 weeks later after my enhancement I am almost at 20/20 with no discomfort at all. I really feel Dr Clavenna has my best interests at heart and really listens to my concerns. He goes over all possible complications and makes sure you are making the right decision for you. Even with going through the procedure twice (which he told me up front would probably happen) I have absolutely nothing bad to say about him and his entire staff. So, I wasn't blessed with 20/20 vision. I'm pretty sure I didn't even have it as a kid. My first glasses were giant dark blue metal rims...real pretty for a 4th grader! Anyway, I've been to my fair share of lenscrafters and pearl visions and although they served their purpose, there is something different about going into an actual doctor's office for your eyes. Everyone I have encountered at Clavenna have been very, very nice...very thorough and answer any questions you might have without trying to hurry you out. In addtion, the women that help you find the perfect pair of eye glasses are awesome!!! They are so nice and will write styles down for you so you can think about it and come back later. Dr Clavenna is really thorough in his work. He is very friendly and professional. I am lucky because he found a temporary condition with my eyes and was concerned so he ordered further blood work with a hematologist. Because of this I found out that I have a hereditary blood disease, one that most people don't find out about till its too late. This changed my life and I am very lucky. There are many eye doctors but he is one of the best. His office is nice, plenty of parking, and everyone is very friendly. My mother's recent surgeries went well, and the doctors and their assistants were great. No complaints with that set of staff. But the front-office staff behaved unprofessionally. When my mother arrived for her first follow-up appointment and was a bit late, she was unhappy to get a bad attitude via a facial expression from the staff person who checked her in (presumably because she was a little late). Unprofessional! When I took my mother to the second follow-up appointment (and this time we arrived a bit early), we were completely ignored by the front-desk staff. We signed in on the sign-in sheet, but nobody greeted or acknowledged us. The staff person who checks folks in was busy with another patient; that's fine. But she never said boo to us after she finished with that person, and she and her colleagues at the desk were busy snacking and loudly chatting about personal matters. After several minutes, I approached the desk to make sure we were checked in, since for all I knew we'd been overlooked. I got a "yes, all set" through a mouthful of snacks. Why weren't we told that without my having to ask? (E.g., "Mrs. X, you're all set, and the doctor will call you back shortly.") It's unprofessional to ignore patients and snack and chit chat instead. I expect better from such a highly respected practice and hope Dr. Clavenna sees this review and tells his front-desk team to seriously shape up. Again, the surgeries and check-ups with the back-office staff went well; no complaints there. But sheesh, clean up your act, front-desk people! I went to Clavenna after reading prior yelp reviews. I am relatively new to the area and after walking around not being able to see clearly for a year I decided I needed to get my eyes checked. Dr.Fitzgerald was nice, professional, and straightforward and the staff was a pleasure to work with. I have been wearing glasses my whole life, and I hate looking for glasses.I have a high prescription, currently wear a progressive, and am limited in the types of frames I can choose. Although I get the thinnest lens possible, I always had lens coming out from the frame. Nicole and Nancy in the optical dept. are fantastic! They will not let you pick out a frame that is not good for your face, but more importantly they will make sure it will work well with your prescription and sit on your face the proper way for optimal vision. I received my glasses and expected the usual, not being able to see clearly and a thick lens coming out of the frame. I was amazed to say the least! My vision was clear and crisp for the first time in over a year . They did an exquisite job on the lens and no thick lens is protruding from the sides of the frame. Dr Fitzgerald performed cataract surgery on both eyes over the last month. I have worn thick classes for the last 60 years and was very hesitant about anyone touching my eyes. I have been going to Clavenna Vision Institute for years. About 7 years ago, Dr. Clavenna informed me I was a candidate for laser surgery. After my consultation, I decided to go ahead with the surgery and it has literally changed my life. I have 20/15 vision in both eyes and have not had to wear contacts or glasses since the surgery. I have had vision issues since I was 16 years old and wish I would have done it sooner. You see a lot of football prices about laser surgery, but don't be fooled.
