My husband and I found Craig on the web and wandered into his store in an office building on west 38th street one rainy friday afternoon. Craig spent a lot of time with us and gave us the opportunity to try out different beds. We found a bed we liked and told him that we were going to go comparison shopping before making a decision. He advised us to go to Macy's which has the best selection. He never pressured us to buy. We did go to Macy's plus one other store but ultimately decided that Craig had the best bed for the best price. We appreciated the time he took and the no-pressure approach. Woke up with worsening aches and pains after trying out the mattress (Summer field Ariel) for a 4 month period to REALLY BREAK it in, just didn't work for me. You talk price range, then try out several options, a fresh sheet of plastic separates you from the beds, but you get to lay down and feel the flavor. da Service: We were hopeful for a quick delivery while we were in town and they were able to accommodate, EXCELLENT!! The 3rd party delivery service was on time and placed the bed in the 3rd floor walk-up with no issues. Shopping at Craig's is an experience. A very New York City experience. Having previously purchased a mattress online and having to return it because I hated it, I didn't want to go through that experience again. I stopped by a few mattress shops in the city, but they were very small and many just carried the major online brands that were non-traditional mattresses (memory foam, no coils). A google search brought me to Craig's: a lot of glowing Yelp reviews, Google reviews, and a New Yorker article describing this "speakeasy" mattress shop. Given that Craig's is located right by my office, I made an appointment online. As others have mentioned, be prepared that Craig's is located on the second floor of an office building and that your appointment will be 1:1. Craig will ask you what kind of mattress you like, cut a piece of cloth for you, and place it on various mattresses as you try them. You never feel rushed or pressured. He IS chatty, so be prepared for that too. I tried many mattresses and ultimately found a mattress that I liked and placed an order (the first one that he showed me!). Fast forward to the day before delivery. I had told Craig I was moving in the morning and would need the mattress to come after noon, but when I got my delivery window it was the first one in the morning. He called the delivery company and they wanted to schedule it for the evening, but he correctly pointed out that because I was in a doorman building they might not let the delivery people up in the evening. He gave me two options: he would go meet them at my building in the morning and let them in OR he would come in the evening and help bring it up to my apartment if they wouldn't let the delivery people up. What? This is a crazy level of service. He also must have spent an hour on the phone between talking to me and the delivery company trying to figure this all out. It turned out my building was able to let them in without Craig being present, but his wilingness to go so far and beyond will not be forgotten by me! read more

I've had my mattress from Craig's Beds for two months now so figured it's time to leave him the review he deserves! Prior to my new mattress, I had a cheap memory foam one from Wayfair for about nine years, it was at the end of its life, and I was starting to get back and shoulder pain. (Also I was breaking up with my ex and told him he could take the mattress. Selfless, I know.) Earlier in the year I slept on a firm mattress at my mom's house when I was visiting, which hurt for the first couple nights, then something magical happened: not only did it stop hurting, it started to feel...good. Great. Amazing. I was falling asleep with ease, feeling refreshed in the morning, and I wasn't waking up with aches and pains. I realized that despite being attracted to words like "soft" and "foam," a firm mattress was what I needed. I looked into getting the same mattress at my mom's, but it was discontinued, and I was getting frustrated looking for something similar enough online. After doing a ton of research on mattresses, I concluded that most of the trendy online brands weren't worth it, but I also really didn't want to go to a big store where I'd be pressured by sales reps. That's how I stumbled onto discovering Craig's through Yelp, and the reviews here speak for themselves. I was intrigued by how local and unique it sounded, so I made an appointment. What a cool experience! Craig is super kind and chill, he doesn't pressure you AT ALL, and he's a really interesting guy to spend an hour or two with. I love how he mixes his photography passion into the setup of the showroom. We talked about all kinds of stuff (photography, music, my breakup lol, the kinds of characters who come in and out of the showroom) while he showed me different options. One might think a one-on-one appointment might be awkward or amp up the sense of pressure to buy, but it's the total opposite, and you can tell how much he cares about creating that kind of experience. He was really patient even when I asked to give mattresses I'd already laid down on another whirl. He cuts a piece of fabric for you and is continually moving it from mattress to mattress for you. I had trouble deciding between two mattresses but ended up choosing the one that was a little firmer, even though the other one felt more comfortable in the store. Delivery was really fast and Craig scheduled it for a couple days after I ordered at my request. The guys who brought it up my walkup apartment were professional, fast, and efficient. Zippy, easy experience. For the first couple weeks I was a little unsure. Craig told me he generally advises people to choose the option that's most comfortable in the showroom despite preconceptions about what they THINK they should get, and I didn't exactly follow that advice. So I was nervous I'd made the wrong choice and would have had to exchange it. But the fact is, I freaking love this mattress. It just required a break-in/adjustment period, and now I am in love. I look forward to cozying up in bed every night, and it's so nice to have this bit of luxury in my life. (Though I should mention that his mattresses are very reasonably priced for the quality!) I will recommend this place to friends. Totally unique buying experience and it feels like a little secret to bypassing both the overhyped online brands and completely stressful big brand stores. I received the mattress literally 24 hours after my appointment. The delivery people were professional with an app to track their whereabouts. This entire process was excellent from beginning to end. Now that we've had out bed for about 6 months it's definitely time to write about the experience that is Craig's Beds. We came on a recommendation from good friends of ours who found Craig years ago on Yelp and saw the amazing reviews and gave it a try. I'm so glad we did! We went to Craig's Beds last fall (yes during the pandemic) and not only felt safe about the way Craig was hosting appointments but also really appreciated his non pushy ways of mattress shopping. He encourages you to try beds of all types and all price points and is genuine in that he wants you to find a bed that suits your real sleeping needs. We had stopped in a competitor (one of the big ones that advertises with podcasts) the night prior and while we had a perfectly fine experience with the competitor it really was nothing compared to Craig's variety of mattresses and service. We ended up with a Summerfield Lexi and are very happy with the price and the delivery was easy and seamless especially for pandemic times. I actually made a mistake and purchased from a different company a high end bed in a box for our upstate house and my back has been killing me so had to get rid of it and hence decided to call him up again to get something similar to what we bought 8 years ago. Update to my review! I just got my king sized summerfield mattress (the Noelle) this weekend, and everything went swimmingly. The delivery service called me the day before to confirm the delivery window (9-11am on a Saturday). The delivery people actually came to my house around 9am and the entire move took less than 15 min up two flights of stairs. FYI I love in Southern brooklyn so it's probably closer since they're traveling from NJ. I've been sleeping on the bed for a few nights already and I'm so glad to not be constantly elbowing my husband. The memory foam is great for not disturbing each other when one of us (me) needs to get up in the middle of the night. The bed is firm to my liking (i tried it out in the showroom) and I sleep on my back and sometimes on my side. Even though I've always loved Simmons mattresses, this summerfield is half the price and comfortable. I have to echo the sentiment shared by others here about the excellent service they provide at this little, unassuming place. First off, don't be surprised when you walk in. This place is SMALL. The sample mattresses are lined almost directly next to each other. But don't let appearances fool you. The folks here are experts in their field, and as others have said, they don't pull the salesman bullshit on you. The place is appointment only and I can see why - as they really take the time to figure out what your sleep preference are and do a great job of explaining the differences and nuances of various mattress types. They also don't rush you, which is great. That means if you really need to lay down on each mattress for awhile to get the real "feel" feel of each, they totally understand. Often times, many people make the mistake of plopping down on a mattress briefly (sometimes just to get pesky salespeople off their backs) and make a rash decision on something that will have a big impact on your well-being, given how much time we all spend on our beds. After getting a lot of insight on the different types of mattresses they have, I feel pretty good about making an educated decision once I make my choice. I rocked up at their "store" in midtown only to find it was a showroom tucked away on the 5th floor of an office/factory building. Headed up without an appointment and called the office number just as Craig was coming back. An unrushed experience trying out beds and no pushy sales - Craig would rather tell you about his photography passion than sell you a bed! Finally settled on a King Size Summerfield Tiffany Fusion - a real coil mattress with an added gel layer. fabulous! Order processed (after a slight hiccup in store that was professionally resolved) and confirmation email received with promised delivery date and a process which was followed to the letter - logistics team phoned me the day before to confirm 2 hour delivery window, then called on the morning of the delivery to confirm they were 20 minutes away, bang in the middle of the promised time slot. We purchased a mattress from Craig's a few weeks before the pandemic, with delivery scheduled for some time in April (mid-quarantine). As our delivery requests changed daily, Craig was super accommodating and helpful. He was still able to deliver the mattresses, and the messengers were very safe and took all necessary precautions (gloves, masks, etc). We ordered the Jennifer, which we've had for a week now, and it's safe to say that it's the most comfortable mattress we've ever had. We've been sleeping like babies! I recently moved to NYC and wanted a mattress to be delivered on the day that I arrived. I shopped around online for quite a while and eventually stumbled on craigsbeds.com, and found a Simmons mattress described to be the equivalent of the W Hotel mattress - a mattress to die for. And the price was very reasonable. I called Craig's Beds and spoke to Craig and he told me that if I placed my order by a certain date, he would have the mattress delivered by the day I moved in. A few days before I am to move in, I get an email from Craig saying the mattress won't be delivered until a few days later. I was not pleased by this news. Luckily, Craig is someone who understands the importance of customer service. Instead of just telling me to figure something out, he personally brought over a brand new Aerobed the day I moved in that I could use until my mattress arrived. I highly doubt Sleepys or any other major mattress dealer would have done that for me. When my mattress did come, it did not disappoint. It is really, really comfortable and I am thrilled with my purchase. Craig's Beds showed me that customer service is not dead and that it is possible to have a pleasant mattress purchase experience. Amazing mattress, amazing price, amazing guy. Craig really IS passionate about beds. By comparison, these Sleepy's salespeople are like used car salesmen; Craig could not care more about getting me in the perfect bed for ME. After years of spending a grand on mattresses which ended up denting, bubbling and killing my back, I was determined to buy a nice memory foam bed, at any price. I spent a month going to awful Sleepy's every day during lunch and took a 20 minute nap on a different bed every day. Finally I decided Comforpedic was better than Tempurpedic due to how much more breathable it was (Tempurpedic was just too hot to my skin). Also the build quality seemed superb. By the miracle of miracles, after calling ten different mattress retailers in the country, I managed to stumble upon Craig's bed. Craig told me he had the entire new line of Comforpedic's in a midtown showroom and i could stop by and try them all, and I did. He walked/talked me through the different firmness and quality levels in all the beds and offered me a price WAY better than anyone else in the country could match. I was slightly skeptical at first but everything seemed above board and Craig is one of the most genuine people I've ever met. A couple weeks later, my bed arrived and my life has been pure bliss ever since. It is perfect, I sleep perfectly. It's a beautiful mattress as well and you can just feel how substantial it is the moment you lay down. Several months later I sent my cousin to Craig and he got exactly the same service and results. I accompanied my boyfriend on his search for a mattress store one day, and this was the first and only stop we made. We went on a sunday and I must say, I was pretty skeptical about finding anything at somewhere other than a generic Sleepy's. It didnt look like a typical mattress store and you had to call his number (since we didnt go during showroom times) so he could come down and open the door. Luckily there were two other people who made the call, so we piggy backed on their appointment. Although I envisioned a bad experience, it was all uphill from there. Craig is quite the character and meeting him was enjoyable from the moment he came down to open the door up until when we had to leave. I dont know what kind of sorcery he used but he managed to fit all those mattresses in the room! How he doesn't have the urge to constantly belly flop on these beds is beyond me. He asked alot of questions such as our budget and how we normally sleep as we were to help us find the perfect match. We spent about two hours taking an afternoon siesta there...clearly for testing purposes - I swear! The whole time, he wasnt pushy about us buying the mattresses - in fact he insisted that we check other locations if we wanted. Unlike most business owners, Craig was actually very honest and has a great sense of humor. He managed to help us and several other customers who came to visit, as well as the phone calls he kept receiving from new customers. Not once did I feel neglected while there. My boyfriend ended up deciding on a mattress after two days of thinking, and went back on Tuesday to place the order. Craig said he'd tried to get it delivered on that Saturday and he definitely pulled through. True to his word! I'm so impressed that I will definitely be buying my next mattress from him and referring others as well. My boyfriend actually said that he wants all business people to be like Craig. My wife and I purchased a mattress set from Craig earlier this week after looking around at other stores like Macy's and Sleepy's. The whole experience was fantastic. Craig takes the time to personally help you find the perfect mattress, unlike Macy's where the salesmen are helping multiple people at once and they just try to sell you a bed to collect the commission. Craig went out of his way to make sure we were happy. Our apartment building is very strict on when they will accept a delivery and since we were going to be out of town a few days after getting the bed, Craig made several calls to the shipping company he works with to ensure that we could get the bed delivered the very next day (and for free). It arrived the next day at 11am in perfect condition. The delivery people were super nice as well. You will need to call him to make an appointment before visiting the showroom because he wants to make sure everyone that comes in gets his full attention (we called at 2pm and got an appointment the same day at 3pm). Craig called us the day after we purchased the bed to make sure that it was delivered on-time and we were happy; good luck getting Macy's to do that. Something else you won't get at a chain store, Craig will give you his cell phone number so you can call him personally if you ever experience any issues with the bed or ever have any questions. His prices are better then or equivalent to any chain mattress store and why would you give your money to a chain when you could support a local small business. I don't want to write a long review because you won't read it all. But seriously go visit Craig's. Call for an appointment. He's got people coming in and out all the time. The place is small but has everything you need. Craig won't sell you on anything. He prefers to sell his own line but he stands behind the product. The mattress I got was solid. Prices are reasonable. Could I have gotten a better price from him? I don't know. Wasn't worth the hassle. I was happy paying more because he made sure I was happy. I had a little problem with my mattress because of the delivery guys messing it up. I emailed Craig and although I didn't catch it when it was delivered, Craig swapped out the mattress for me. 100% customer satisfaction. Great customer service. Craig knows beds. He's like an entrepreneur that just wants to help people sleep better. He treats every customer the same. He didn't have to exchange my mattress for me but he did with no hesitation. My friend recommended this mattress dealer to me, and I am so glad I took him up on his praises of Craig. I went last night and was surprised at how simple and easy the mattress buying process could be with the right place. Just like the other reviews state, Craig was courteous, personable, and laid back and didn't haggle me for a bed. He kept a nice, light conversation, and let me try out the beds I was interested in. He answered my questions, but didn't push me to making a decision, which was so nice compared to my experiences at other showrooms. The bed was a GREAT price, too, which surprised me. I had tried similar beds and was looking at twice the price that Craig offered me with the mattress AND delivery. He was wonderful at being conscious of my budget limitations, and guided me through to help me pick a bed I could have passed out on in the room happily. He's even going to help me see if I can get my bed early so I can move it into my apartment the day I move in. I also liked Craig's quirkiness, and we finished my appointment with throwing a football around. Talk about customer service! There was a hiccup with my mattress delivery on the day they told me, but Craig was sure to find out what happened, and how to make sure I got it the next day. Love my mattress from Craig's beds. Craig is no-frills mattress shopping at it's best. They've cut every corner and passed on the savings to customers: it's not a ground floor retail space, it's not a spacious super fancy decorated showroom..it's just a bunch of mattresses in a large room in an office building room. For someone like me that hates dealing with slimy salesmen and negotiating prices, Craig's is a breath of fresh air. Craig sells all the name brand mattresses that you'll find at department stores. He also sells his own line (summerfield) which is made by the same manufacturers. You really can't go too wrong because every mattress he sells is one he picked out specifically. Just do yourself a favor and go here rather than one of the big mattress stores like Sleepy's or Serta. I've been to Craig's twice. It's a unique experience -- you definitely won't get a salesperson following you around asking unctuous questions. The showroom is small and filled with a number of different types of mattresses, some designed by Craig himself (the Summerfield line). Based on your preferences, Craig will direct you to this or that mattress, and give you as much time as you want to roll around on it and try it out. Craig is talkative and friendly but doesn't try to sell you bullshit when you ask questions about mattresses. He also won't follow you around the entire store, which I really like. He'll give you space to try stuff out, but let you ask whatever questions you want. Also -- if you like a medium firm mattress, BUY THE CRAIG'S MATTRESS. It's a mattress Craig designed himself. It's also the most comfortable thing I have ever slept on in my entire life. It has a 90 day money back guarantee, but there's no way I want my money back on it. Craig is awesome! He worked tirelessly to get me happy. We had a couple of hiccups that were uncontrollable, he was solutions oriented and never skipped a beat. He checked in with me frequently, was incredibly communicative and made sure I had the perfect mattress. I just moved to the city after graduating from college and I could not be thankful enough to have shopped with Craig.
