And her brown bread was the best we had in Ireland. I wish I could have some right now. The location is perfect for Galway, just a two minute walk over the bridge to the center of town. It has all the benefits of being right in the city, like walking to the pubs and shops and easy access to all the city's sights, but since it's just over the bridge, it's quiet too... and we were there on Friday and Saturday nights. Our room was very comfortable and the bathroom clean. We ate breakfast looking out on Mary's beautiful garden with Galway just beyond. It couldn't have been a better experience. From the small back deck you can look over this town all the way to the high cliffs that drop into the ocean, creating picturesque views of the orange, red and pink sunset. We arrived to a small sign personally welcoming us. Niall and Darra treated us like family while we stayed at their house and even dined at their table. They were personally acquainted with the entire area and gave us honest recommendations for spending our days there. We were able to see the Cliffs without crowds because of their directions. We then had the perfect dinner of local food at Roadford House where we walked along stonewalls past cows, horses, and sheep to the intimate dining room overlooking pastures. We ended the night by enjoying local music at O'Connor's Pub just a minute walk from the Sea View. We would highly recommend staying at the Sea View for at least a few nights on your trip to Ireland. All the rooms come with their own ensuite bathroom and everything in the room itself is quite updated with little modern conveniences (she even included an outlet converter in case we needed another or if someone forgot theirs which was especially handy). She welcomed us with drinks (fantastic bailey's coffee for me, and a beer for my beau) and breakfast the next day was just fantastic -- I would recommend the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, but the omelette looks very delicious as well. Well, when we arrived I was told to just park on the sidewalk across the street from the hotel. Not exactly, my idea of a safe, secure parking situation. Once we got inside, the room was nice and clean, no problems with the property. But the issues continued the next morning. Around 11am I went out to put some bags in my car before check-out. I walked back to the entrance and the front door was locked. So now I'm standing there locked out of the entrance of the hotel I'm staying in at 11am on a Saturday morning. So I knock on the door and no answer. Finally, another guest leaves and I sneak in to my own hotel, but my waiting didn't end there. I went to the desk to check out and there was nobody. So I stood there and waited again until finally a staff member happened to notice me. When I was finally given the consideration of checking out, I asked the staff member why the entrance to the hotel would be locked at 11am. I was told they keep the door locked for security, which was kinda weird since we were in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere in Ireland. Anyway, the staff member then seemed upset at the question and responded "Why, is there a problem?" Not exactly what I would classify as cordial customer service. It felt more like I was going to get beat up if I opened my mouth again. So at that point, I just cut my losses and let them figure out why it would be weird for the entrance of a hotel/restaurant business to be locked at 11am on a Saturday morning when they're serving brunch. I wouldn't recommend staying here, unless you have no other option.

This is about a 20-minute walk into Ennis proper if you like to walk, it's easy terrain. You can get a cab if you prefer. There is a grocery at the nearby roundabout that will make sandwiches. It's also very convenient for driving out the the Cliffs of Moher or the surrounding areas.

If I made a list of my favorite home-away-from-home comforts, Heron's Rest would cater to just…read moreabout every one. First, this charming boutique B&B is steps away from Quay Street--no need for a car or taxi. There are too many great restaurants and bars so close by that it's a shame I couldn't visit them all. It's also in walking distance to the bus stop that takes you to the Aran Island ferries. Sorcha Malloy, the owner and hostess has an eye for creating clean, cozy, minimalist spaces in the historic buildings that make up the Heron's Rest. Rooms are outfitted with down pillows, crisp sheets, and comfy white duvets with splashes of color from a vintage table cloth or Indian silk throw. Coffee and tea are provided, as is a rockin' crystal decanter of port for a pre-bedtime nip. The view from every room is gorgeous--swans, fishing boats, and the B&B's namesake (Arthur the Heron) float in the Galway Bay just a few feet away from your window. Rooms are stocked with robes, slippers, hair dryers, and a TV (I didn't watch the tube but noticed it was small--if TV is important to you when you travel, this place might not be for you). The bathrooms are stocked with natural bath products. Bathrooms have been renovated and are modern; showers have plenty of hot water. The two single rooms share a bath but Sorcha had plans to renovate that floor making one large room with private bath. All other rooms have their own bath. I saved the best for last--breakfast. Sorcha is a trained chef and the breakfasts were some of the best meals we had in Ireland. We started with a cheese tray featuring local cheeses, honey, and spreads. There were homemade savory scones and red currant & lemon muffins to die for. Each guest received a pot of freshly-made espresso (or tea) and a pitcher of steamed milk. Then Sorcha brought out freshly-squeezed OJ and an incredible fruit bowl with seasonal fruit (ours had kiwi, watermelon, blackberries, red currants, pomegranate seeds, strawberries--I could go on...). Local yogurt and flax were offered, too. And those were just our starters--next we chose between breakfast burritos with avocado and homemade salsa, local salmon-topped eggs Benedict, banana pancakes with creme fraiche, and a few other creatively inspired breakfast treats. Needless to say, breakfast carried us through each day until cocktail hour around 4:00. Prices were reasonable, especially given the gourmet food we were treated to. My friend and I paid $90 USD a night for private single rooms and we shared a bath. Our other friend splurged, wanting a double room with private bath, and paid around $180 (it would have been $100 a person for two people sharing). There was also free wireless throughout the inn. Finally, there are a few things I should note that didn't bother me but might bother some. Like I mentioned, don't expect high-def TV with cable; the inn is in the heart of Galway so some might find the streets a little loud (my white noise app blocked it all); and the rooms I saw were small based on what Americans are used to. Do yourself a favor and skip Galway chains like Jury's Inn or the Radisson and experience the charming Heron's Rest Inn!

Sorcha was the perfect hostess and prepares the most incredible meals anyone could ever want. Her training as a chef was witnessed, as she prepared breakfast for us each morning, and we were never dissappointed. I tried a different breakfast each morning and they were each outstanding.
