One of my all-time favorite chains, we had another great visit today at a Cracker Barrel, this time in Madison, WI. Our server, Tamika, was fantastic. She was funny, kind, and attentive. The place is bustling with very hard-working staff, and she really made our experience great. As for the food, we had the fried pickles, and they were amazing. TIP: Watch out, because they're very hot when they come out of the fryer. I had the fried chicken dinner with a baked potato and turnip greens. Phenomenal! TIP2: if you like a little spice, order the turnip greens with the pepper vinegar. Amazing! read more

Order to go 3 piece catfish dinner and was charged for 3 piece catfish dinner and when we got it home there was only 2 pieces. When I placed the order, the waiter ask my name and I said Jim. When asked me how to spell it, I knew something might go wrong. We like the food there, but the service is really lacking. The ambiance is good, could have padded seats or at least offer a cushion. Sometimes it is a little chilly there. I can't understand why a southern style restaurant wouldn't offer some form of whole hog fresh pork sausage with their wonderful pancakes. Smoked sausage or turkey sausage just doesn't do it. I would like to see you consider these changes. read more

We asked for a basic substitution. Our waitress said she would check, then never came back. I then flagged her down and she "forgot" to check. Then our food came and that was at least good. We never saw her reenter the dining area and had to flag down a different waitress to get our biscuits that never were brought out. We finally got the biscuits but we were at the end of our meal by the time we saw her come back out and requested refills. I've eaten at a few Cracker Barrel's in a few different states.. but it's been awhile. It's never really been a fantastic experience but this location changed that for me. It's charming country decor with that memorable retail store when you first walk in. We're traveling in our van and it's widely known that Crack Barrels will usually let you stay overnight in the parking lot. We asked the manager upon arriving and he was super nice and said that we could most definitely stay the night. We got a table and ordered some dinner. Grilled chicken tenders with veggies. The food came out hot and in a timely manner and tasted great. Our service experience was amazing from the hostess to our server to the manager coming by and checking on us. The service was amazing! The food was really bad. We hadn't been to a Cracker Barrel in over 20 yrs and decided to try it again. It was really without flavor in the gravy, the hash browns were cold when brought out. My husband's ham was all fat! I ordered the Grandpas Country Fried Breakfast and only ate some of the chicken ( it was so dry) and the apples. It was supposed to also come with biscuits and gravy which the waitress forgot to bring out. I told her I didn't need it anyway and it was okay. Came in for the first time over the weekend a bit later in the day however even then it wasn't too busy. We were seated right away and got lucky to sit by the fireplace. The whole restaurant was super cozy, very country and I absolutely loved it. My son loved all the decor and was mesmerized. The portions for the food was just perfect! Not too much and not too little. The casseroles were both very delicious and the egg was cooked perfectly that the yolk was still runny. I had the Green Apple sweet tea, a bit on the sweeter side but you can taste both the green apple and the sweet tea. The total for a family of four was very reasonable and honestly a lot cheaper than other places. This may be our new go to when it comes to breakfast. read more

Hostess ignored us for 10 minutes - even though they weren't that busy. Then, We waited 10 minutes for waitress to acknowledge us - they all seemed more interested in cleaning up than serving customers (perhaps we were there during a shift change). Had to ask the waitress twice for napkins and lemons - when it was clear we were upset and waiting for these items to eat our dinner, she still continued to clear a vacant table vs getting us what we needed. The service was truly unacceptable. The food was not up to standards of what I remembered 3+ years ago. Green beans and turnip greens were poorly seasoned, strait from the can. This staff & manager was great. We stayed the night in our RV the night before Thanksgiving. We didn't realize that to-go Thanksgiving meals are one of their busiest times, and they sell/deliver them from the back. So we were sort of in their way lol. However, the manager came over and was very nice and respectful- didn't order us to leave or pressure us. Oh, also, their food & service was excellent. This is my 1st visit to a Cracker Barrel despite seeing the name for many times in the past. I was excited to try it but my husband has reminded to set a realistic expectation. We walked past the store where there were a lot of nostalgic items as well as Christmas things. The store smelled nice and we proceeded to the hostess area where a gentleman sat us immediately. Our server was a young man and took our orders of chicken dumplings and meatloaf. It was around 10 minutes when our food was delivered. My first impression looking at my dish was is this for human consumption? I get it, chicken dumpling is a hearty country cooking. Presentation matters. It was so gross looking as the sauce/gravy were super thick and looked dry. Then chunks of dumplings were just piling underneath the thick white gravy. There were few pieces of chicken breasts under the dumplings. I was hesitant to try but my husband said the taste was acceptable. I ended up trying a bite and had to ask the server to heat it up since it was just room temperature. The server's mask was under his chin and I didn't feel comfortable eating after the plate was reheated. So I just left it. Both side dishes were ok! I have never been to a Cracker Barrel prior to this, I read the reviews and was hesitant but still decided to give this restaurant a try. I am so glad I did! When we walked in it was a little overwhelming as the entrance opens up into the store and it was hard to find the hostess stand. Once we go to the hostess stand, The hostess was very frazzled and did not greet us. She started yelling at a gentleman that worked there to seat us. He looked confused as to why? He greeted us and had to figure out how to work the iPad to put us at a table. I had let them know we needed 3+ A high chair, they sat us next to a big party and said a high chair couldn't fit there so we have to hold our child. our waiter was prompt and very nice. When he came over I let him know we needed a highchair and he let me know that it can be put at the end of the table and that he would work around it. I thanked him repeatedly (not sure why we couldn't just be moved to a different table?) He took our drink order and came back with the high chair. He took our food order but as others stated in their reviews it takes forever!!! So make sure you are not that hungry and don't have hungry children as we did! You get a lot of food!! read more

The staff here are very nice, I place a last minute order, it doesn't make it in. That's fine, I wasn't in a hurry and I have been in that position. I ask about it and they have my order out very fast and even threw in some extra for the inconvenience. It's always really clean and their food is pretty good and is not over priced. I don't know how to rate the food here, I ordered a chicken pot pie one day for delivery grub hub and it was delicious the following week I ordered it from Grub hub and it was horrible. It was not the delivery driver's fault at all. The chicken pot pie was upside down in the container, it looked like the person that put the chicken pot pie in the container dropped it on the floor. The turnip greens were decent, macaroni was mediocre compared to other Cracker Barrel's I've been to and the hash brown casserole was old where it was literally hard in some places. Fish was salty. Hush puppies were amazing, meatloaf was good, fried shrimp was superb but for the amount of food we ordered that small of a portion being good is unacceptable. Growing up we used to Cracker Barrel a lot. Even as I got older I remember traveling through Indiana and going to a Cracker Barrel. Moving to Minnesota there used to be a Cracker Barrel not too far from our house that we had visited before they closed. If I remember correctly all of their locations in Minnesota closed. The one location that we have known over the years that was still open was the Cracker Barrel in Madison. We drive by several times a year when we are traveling south. This evening we were staying in Madison and we all decided to go to Cracker Barrel for dinner. One of the memories that we all shared from Cracker Barrel is the shop full of goodies inside and that you can order breakfast all day. Our family loves, loves breakfast so we were pretty excited to check this out. My nephew ordered the sunrise sampler, I ordered the country boy breakfast, my brother had biscuits and gravy, my wife is weird because she orders chicken fingers EVERYWHERE but we still love her anyways, and my sister in law ordered eggs and bacon. I ordered ham with my country boy and received a couple of very large pieces with my order. We all had grits and biscuits with our meals as well as their famous hash brown casserole. Well our taste buds and memories must have changed. We all felt that our meals were ok. My ham while I had plenty of it was a bit dry and salty. The grits were lacking in flavor and really needed salt and butter. The hash brown casserole was not hot and also just ok. It was just warm. They actually forgot the sausage for my nephew. When we asked about it they did cook it and bring it out right away. Unfortunately it was cooked so much he couldn't even cut it. We were all hungry and did eat our meals, this was just not what we remembered or expected. The meal was good and Cracker Barrel is affordable. Cracker Barrel has always been one of my favorite places to eat and shop but yesterday's visit was absolutely horrible! My sister and I stopped in to eat and found the service to be horrendous. Our waitress never smiled once and came across as indifferent, verging on rude. When she took our order, I asked if an appetizer could please come out before our meal. She said yes. I ordered a loaded bake sweet potato which came out cooked on the very outsides but basically the whole potato was hard. We hadn't received the appetizer yet, so I told her she could take that off of our bill. Her reply was, "Oh, I didn't write that down anyway so you weren't charged for it." When I attempted to eat my sweet potato and found it to be hard, I couldn't get her attention to send it back because she never came back to ask how things were. I ended up flagging down the host who seated us and he took it back to the kitchen where I waited about 15 minutes for it to be brought back out. The host was friendly and kept letting me know it should be coming out soon, so I have no complaint with him. My sister's food was good but we both noticed that the food was practically thrown or dropped on our table when served. She just wasn't friendly or professional, at all and I kept thinking that she shouldn't be in the profession of working with the public. Normally enjoy visiting this location while traveling, but it has gone extremely downhill recently. Visited on 10/22/2022 and it was horrible. The host sat us, no server ever came to take orders. The host eventually came to take our order and the cook brought us the food. All while 2-3 workers were walking around ignoring people. Couldn't even get refills or napkins. We were given our check before the food even arrived. The food was not good. You could tell the food had been sitting under warmers. Biscuits and cornbread were hard as rocks. The worst part was when we checked out the cashier asked how our server was and we stated they never came by. Then asked how the food was and we said not good. Visited Madison for Christmas coming from California. We don't have a Cracker Barrel but been wanting to try it. Ambience/Interior: So cute and quaint inside. Like your entering grandmal's house. For new people, you didn't enter the wrong door, you have to walk through the store and look for the hostess booth. The restaurant is pretty large considering how small I feel Madison is. Service: We had an elderly lady seat us. She was a bit slow but so cute and sweet. Our waitress was a sweet lady who knew her menu well. She checked on us often. Food: I ordered the pot roast special which comes with mashed potatoes. Added a side of broccoli and Mac & cheese. Sides were small, but all had plenty of flavor. Daughter ordered the chicken biscuits with double side of hash brown casserole. She didn't like the cranberry sauce it came with it. But I think it made it taste better since the chicken didn't have much flavor. Hash brown casserole had plenty of onions which she loved. Husband ordered the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and a side salad. He loved it all. Especially the gravy. Most meals come with biscuits or corn muffins. They were ok. Not great. Parking/area: Plenty of parking. I feel like everywhere in Madison has adequate parking compared to California. Lol. No complaints. Sometimes my gent and I just don't have the patience to wait an hour for a brunch place and want something quick, cheap, and reliable. Enter the Cracker Barrel. CB is a place I saw on every road trip as a kid but not a place we ever stopped. A Cracker Barrel-obsessed pal and I went a few years ago and I was actually really impressed with the quality and quantity of food I got for about $8. Last year I returned to Cracker Barrel in a hangry fit for breakfast and it's been a semi-regular stop since. On my last visit I got biscuits and gravy, deliciously crispy bacon, and a slice of hashbrown casserole for $7.69. Most certainly not a healthy start to the day but it kept me full for about eight hours. My lunch/dinner pick is usually the chicken tenders and a rotation of sides - always amounting to enough for two meals. At this location service has always been invariably friendly - some of the older ladies seem to genuinely love their job and the younger servers, while not as passionate, are good. The store is an entertaining way to pass the time while you wait for a table - there's mini air hockey and so many things to smell (candles, lotions, sprays, and more). Bathrooms have been clean enough. Minor issues: due to how massive the restaurant is it's sometimes a while before you can find your server if you need something. The cashiers can sometimes be aloof; for example, on my last visit there were three people behind the checkout counter and only one person running a register. The other two were chatting and oblivious to the line building up. Someone skipped the line and walked straight up to the next open register and that snapped the chit-chatters out of their convo, but that meant those of us that had been waiting still had to wait. Cracker Barrel feels very "middle of the road." The food isn't bad at all, but everything sort of has the same taste. I ordered biscuits, eggs and the hash brown casserole. The biscuits are McDonald's-esque (which isn't bad, just expected something different). The hash brown casserole was again, fine. The biggest flavor I got was the pepper in the casserole. Stopped in on a Tuesday morning for breakfast in recognition of hubby making it to another birthday. On special this morning was the stuffed lemon blueberry French toast which hubby didn't hesitate to order. It also comes with eggs and a meat and overall he enjoyed it with the exception he felt the French toast could have been hotter. He suspected that it comes prepared and the cook just has to heat it up. However, our server, Lori, did a great job for us on a weekday when we were both rushed to get to work. Although we don't go out for breakfast often on a weekday, we remembered her and were pleased she was serving this morning. She kept our coffee cups full, made sure we were happy with our order and dropped off our bill with the food so we could pay at our convenience. Service like this easily makes up for French toast that isn't piping hot. My birthday is still several months away, but we'll probably plan on a weekday breakfast on that day as well! read more
