a woman's hand holding a plate of crabs

I'm late posting this review, so I apologize for that. We recently moved to this area and close to Crabland. We decided to give them a try and ordered 3 dozen large males. We had to wait in line for close to 30 minutes to get the crabs (an odd concept, I'm not aware of any other Baltimore crab place that runs this way). Get home and quickly realize these are extra small at best. We could not believe they were selling such small crabs as larges! These crabs were so small I'm certain they were illegal to catch. They were barely the size of my palm. It was so unbelievable I had to package them and go back up there, to show him what he is selling! Also, we wanted to let other patrons know what they are buying isn't even smalls. The owner got very angry and defensive toward us bringing the crabs up and wanted to argue with me saying I didn't get them from Crabland. It was truly unbelievable and I will never return. It's one thing to give a bad service but to act so rude as an owner is just not acceptable.

Crab land is right next to Fruit land ( they sell live crabs) I believe they are owned by the same people. I've only been there about 10 times and each time I've been treated with respect and given a fair price. They have good crab and plenty of other items on the menu. They aren't over seasoned. They use a house blend and although I prefer Old Bay the blend they use is just fine. I've never sat down to eat there but there is a small dining area. When ever I'm there they are always busy but never too busy to stop and help. I've always been greeted with a friendly hello. They also often have $1 Crabs.

From the outside, it looks like a small shack--or more like a house--and the inside carries that same no-frills, classic crab house vibe. Simple tables, open space--exactly what you expect from a traditional spot. It was completely empty when we arrived just after 12 PM, but honestly, that worked in our favor because we were starving. We started with a few appetizers:    *   The cream of crab soup wasn't what I expected, especially for Baltimore, where I've had much better.    *   The crab deviled eggs were underwhelming--very little crab and mostly tasted like regular deviled eggs.    *   The honey Old Bay wings were actually really good.    *   The hush puppies were just okay. Now, the main event--the crabs. We ordered a dozen medium males, and they did not disappoint. They were flavorful, meaty, and exactly what we came for. I did get one bad crab, but our server handled it immediately and replaced it with a fresh, hot one. She also stayed on top of our drinks the entire time, which I appreciated. A few things to note: they don't serve alcohol, but it's BYOB (wine only). Coolers are allowed, and they'll provide ice, which is a nice touch. Overall, I'd definitely come back--but strictly for the crabs. Next time, I'm saving my appetite (and my wallet) for the main attraction.

It was extremely crowded. Reservations are definitely recommended. Our table was ready on time. On this particular visit I was disappointed by a few things. Let's start with what went right. Pros- 1.Our reserved table was ready. 2. Crabs were fat and delicious. 3. Three people ordered the shrimp platter with 3 variations of shrimp and loved it. 4. They have a sink within the restaurant if you just want to wash your hands. 5. A screened in outdoor eating area. Cons 1. It took 20-30 minutes to get apps. When the cream of crab and fries were received they were cold and the waitress had to microwave the soup again. 2. I ordered 1lb of shrimp and onions w/ 2 ears of corn for my app and never received them. The crabs came out an hour later with my corn. The waitress said the shrimp were coming up and she just needed to get them. I cancelled them because I wanted them before the crabs not over an hour later. So until the crabs came I and my daughter watched everyone eating but us. 3. The bathroom had no paper towels and at 1 point no toilet paper. The trash can was overrun and needed to be emptied. There is only 1 stall for women and men. 4. A long wait to get food and even pay for your bill. 5. The waitress had to reminded that mozzarella sticks had been ordered as an appetizer. They came after the crabs and her entree. I'm not sure but I feel they may have been short on staff, but if that's the case they need to compensate the customer in some way and apologize and acknowledge that they're short tonight. I bought my family here to celebrate a birthday and because of the extreme wait they said this was their first and last time coming here. SN: Someone should be checking the bathrooms every hour to make sure they are stocked with the necessary supplies, trash emptied, and clean.

So I called one day recently and ordered a dozen steamed medium males for $39, along with some corn. It should be noted that I don't remember the place being such a dump. It really looks decrepit; I wonder how they even pass inspection? Anyway, I was looking back fondly on my past experience, and just ignored that detail... The staff was very nice, and my order was ready on time as promised. The bag of crabs (and corn) seemed heavy enough. But when I got home and dug into them, I was disappointed! Here are my takeaways. - At least half of the crabs were light as a feather, with mostly water and little meat, so I guess those crabs had recently molted. - Only a few crabs had both of their mature claws. The rest had either one normal and one small claw, or one claw was missing entirely. That's a sign of poor handling and/or poor selection. - There was so little meat that they seemed to be smalls rather than mediums. Only four of the twelve were actually heavy and what I would consider to be medium crabs. - Many claws when cracked squirted out water, and the meat was miniscule relative to the shell size. This is August, so I was expecting much heavier crabs. I wish Maryland would require watermen to *weigh* their crabs as well as *measure* them from point to point. Throw back the lightweight ones in order to let them fatten up. So all in all, not a great experience. I won't be going back. (The corn was good, though.)

Geresbeck's has the best sales in town when it comes to seafood. The shrimp is always cheap & they steam on site. On a recent visit while waiting for my shrimp to be steamed, I took a walk around the market to see what else I could buy. Geresbeck's has a great speciality ice cream section. They had my favorite Taharka Brother's honey graham ice cream and some other tasty choices. I ended up in the bakery department and saw SO MANY delicious looking baked goods from a peanut butter Boston crème cake to banana pudding parfaits to mini cheesecakes. Their doughnuts are huge and made with the love of someone that loves to bake. I took quite a bit of photos showcasing their selections. As I walked through the store, I started to get a little hungry for a snack. I came back around to the deli/hot foods department and saw a mountain of tasty looking western fries. Now, western fries are extremely popular in Baltimore and the surrounding counties. I've had my share of western fries from the center of the city, to Brass Hen in Eastpoint mall, to even Royal Farms. All were delicious, BUT THESE FRIES WERE ABSOLUTE LOVE AT FIRST BITE!!! They were crunchy like a piece of fried chicken and tender inside like a fluffy baked potato. Omg, I can taste them right now. They were so, so amazingly yummy. If you love potatoes, or any variation of fries, you'd LOVE these. I actually may go back very soon for a fix. I didn't need salt, pepper, ketchup, NOTHING. Now, for my only gripe about Geresbeck's is that I wouldn't necessarily buy goods outside of the seafood, bakery or specialty items. I found that other items in the store, unless on sale, are higher priced than other grocery stores. But they have to counterbalance that with the affordable seafood prices, right? Anyways, if you're in the area, stop by and pick you up some delicious doughnuts and western fries while you're there. Geresbeck's is a piece of nostalgia that will make you feel like you were back in a time when everything was simpler and easy. They will always be solid with me.

I suspect Captain Jim runs his ships all the same, no matter where they are located, so I'll put it here - but if the Captain is still in the same spot next year, I'll start the new Yelp page then. My grandfather lived in Dundalk all his life, and he was a tremendously important person in my life. He passed some time ago and is buried at... one of those cemeteries on German Hill, right across the street from Captain Jim's. I like to visit him on his birthday, and Christmas if I have the chance. This year would have been his 99th birthday. I put a box of Butterfinger candies on his headstone because they were his favorite, and decided that I would get some steamed crabs in his honor because they were also one of his favorite things (and I had the money). We were originally going to get the crabs somewhere else, but figured, 'hey, Captain Jim's is right here. Why not give them a try?' We weren't disappointed. It took about 20 minutes for them to freshly steam 3 dozen small males, and a pound of shrimp for us. It wasn't much more than $50 (which is what I had on hand from my grandmother, who has been without my grandfather for at least 15 years now). The scent of the (I'm guessing) J.O2 seasoning filled our van, and the steam from the crabs actually fogged our windows. I spent about 8 hours picking crabs. I find the activity so calming, and could do it all the time if my arthritic elbows and shoulders didn't throw an absolute fit the next day. The crabs were delicious and made me happy, and isn't that the point? We got two different butters to dip the crab in, but that's not really my thing. My boyfriend said that the plain butter tasted woody, and he didn't like that, but the garlic butter was a hit and he has used the leftover butter to make at least one dinner so far. The shrimp were lovely, and came with cocktail sauce, and steamed onions because what's the point of steamed shrimp if not to get some onions as well? I think we did right by my grandfather. Would recommend
