I decided to stop in while at the bakery nearby because I love my seafood. This place was clean and the seafood smell wasn't potent which let me know they have fresh seafood. I decided to order the fried shrimp platter. This places chooses to butterfly their shrimp and that's okay. The hush puppies are phenomenal please keep it up! The fried were crinkle and hot, yum, the fried shrimp were good, I only recommend some more seasoning and this Will take them out of the park! The guy was nice and friendly to me. I don't know if I should put this review here or if I should start a whole new page because I visited the Dundalk location, on German Hill Road (Al's was there last summer). I suspect Captain Jim runs his ships all the same, no matter where they are located, so I'll put it here - but if the Captain is still in the same spot next year, I'll start the new Yelp page then. My grandfather lived in Dundalk all his life, and he was a tremendously important person in my life. He passed some time ago and is buried at... one of those cemeteries on German Hill, right across the street from Captain Jim's. I like to visit him on his birthday, and Christmas if I have the chance. This year would have been his 99th birthday. I put a box of Butterfinger candies on his headstone because they were his favorite, and decided that I would get some steamed crabs in his honor because they were also one of his favorite things (and I had the money). We were originally going to get the crabs somewhere else, but figured, 'hey, Captain Jim's is right here. Why not give them a try?' We weren't disappointed. It took about 20 minutes for them to freshly steam 3 dozen small males, and a pound of shrimp for us. It wasn't much more than $50 (which is what I had on hand from my grandmother, who has been without my grandfather for at least 15 years now). The scent of the (I'm guessing) J.O2 seasoning filled our van, and the steam from the crabs actually fogged our windows. I spent about 8 hours picking crabs. I find the activity so calming, and could do it all the time if my arthritic elbows and shoulders didn't throw an absolute fit the next day. The crabs were delicious and made me happy, and isn't that the point? We got two different butters to dip the crab in, but that's not really my thing. My boyfriend said that the plain butter tasted woody, and he didn't like that, but the garlic butter was a hit and he has used the leftover butter to make at least one dinner so far. The shrimp were lovely, and came with cocktail sauce, and steamed onions because what's the point of steamed shrimp if not to get some onions as well? I think we did right by my grandfather. My family had never gotten food from here before but on a whim decided since it was on our way home to give it a go. Went mostly for the cream of crab, but also purchased fried shrimp and shrimp salad. The fried shrimp and shrimp salad was good. However the cream of crab was awful. There was no crab meat to be seen and the sherry or wine in the base, overpowered any other flavor. And I mean NO crabmeat in the soup. read more

Giving 2 starts for the taste and size of the crabs. Had been going there for years until I had a horrible experience! The customer service is awful, if you have an issue with your order the younger woman that works there will argue with you instead of trying to help resolve your issue. I was sold crabs that had clearly been recooked. They were as mushy as wet paper! No way we could eat them in this condition! At these prices I want my crabs to be as close to perfect as possible! I had a minor issue prior to my run-in with the woman who works there past but I spoke with Jim and he was more than happy to replace the crabs that we were not happy with. I won't buy crabs here again unless I know Jim is there. read more

Got a dozen of "Medium" males for $48 yesterday. The taste of them were good, however I do not know what criteria they go by to make them "Mediums" The sizes were more more like half "Smalls" Half "Regular Mediums" Felt ripped off for the steep $48 price TBH. read more

I purchased 2 containers of crab meat. One Lump and one Jumbo Lump. Both had increased in price pretty substantially but I purchased them anyway for Mother's Day dinner. They were put on ice for the short ride home. When I arrived home 15 minutes later my wife opened them to check for freshness. The Lump smelled fresh. The Jumbo Lump had an odor when first opened like a fart. I smelled it to see what she meant and was right. I returned back to the store to return it. The young lady was respectful and took it in the back to her manager. She said he offered me a replacement but no refund. As I started to open the replacement to check it she said she couldn't give me another if I touched and opened it. The manager came out at that point and said he was replacing the one I returned as a courtesy but normally wouldn't have done so because the return didn't smell bad to him. I told him I disagree. He went on telling me he got a shipment yesterday (of which the return came from) and another today which the replacement was taken from. It smelled just like the one I returned. I told him they both were right on the edge of spoiling. He disagreed telling me he does this everyday. At $48 for a container I should be satisfied with my purchase and I am not. No refund and a container of very questionable crabmeat I decided to just leave. In today's climate and at this stage in my life $48 is not worth fighting over, especially if the police get involved. Captain Jim's never has to worry about me as a customer ever again. I was kind giving them 1 star. I have bought seafood from them in the past and very pleased. However, today was a deal breaker. When you feel you've done your customer a favor you've just crossed the line to bad customer service. If I had been given a refund all would've ended well. There wasn't any type of apology for the bad product! I will tell all my friends and relatives about this experience. Update May 8, 2021 I had to trash the container of crabmeat the manager said was not bad. I have a large open kitchen. When I took the top off the crabmeat container today it smelt so bad that you could smell it from across the room! I can only imagine if I had waited until tomorrow to cook it for Mother's Day. read more

Decided to try out the crabs since it is fairly close to our house and heard good things. We ordered a dozen medium males and they were very tasty and MOST were a good size. But there were a few that looked very very small. And we were shorted a crab, which left us with only 11. The meat in them were a bit squishy, but other than that, they were pretty good. They also had a special where if you bought a dozen crabs, you get a pound of shrimp and 2 ears of corn free which we thought was awesome. Except the shrimp were also mushy and very hard to peel. My first time coming to this place and let me tell you, the crabs was soooo delicious along with the corn they threw in. Even the corn was delicious. I brought some to my mom in PG MD and she said the were better than the Warf in DC. If anyone familiar with the warf then u know. I will be coming back here soon read more

Went to capt. Jimmy's today 3/31/2020 and i asked the older lady how are crabs if they were heavy and yellow mustard . The lady said yes and they were ALL PAPER SHELLS CRABS and then they showed me nice female crabs and gave me baby females. Don't trust the mother and daughter that work there they lie about there product to sell. read more

I got a dozen of blue point oysters. Four of the twelve were dead, dried up and open. I will not be getting anything from Capt. Jim's again.
