We divided a 3-day road trip by mileage and decided to stay where the mileage led us. On the second night, this was the Cozy Mountain Motel in Austin, NV (called "a living ghost town") on Highway 50, "America's loneliest Highway." This is an iconic roadside motel, with coffee in the office. The rooms are small without a lot of bells and whistles, but immaculate and very comfortable. They were equipped with everything we needed for a good night's sleep. We were greeted by a deer in the parking lot in the evening and a beautiful gray cat and a red chicken welcomed us when we opened the door in the morning! The Cozy Mountain Motel seems to be owned by the same people who own Grandma's restaurant down the street*--great pizza, excellent service, and another 5-star rating from me. We would be delighted to stay at the Cozy Mountain Motel again should the opportunity present itself--and I really hope it does! *I say this because the motel's coffee mugs also have Grandma's logo on them. P.S.--if you are traveling the "Loneliest Highway," be sure you keep your gas tank as full as possible. You don't want to run out of gas out there. I agree with all the 5-star ratings. I have stayed at the Cozy Mountain eight different times over the past dozen or so years. Whenever I ride my motorcycle across central Nevada, I stop in Austin at the Cozy Mountain. The rooms have been super clean and the beds very comfy without exception. While virtually everything in town is next to US 50, highway noise is not a problem. If your heart is set on a microwaved "free" breakfast at a chain motel, you'll have to drive 110 miles west to Fallon or 150 miles east to Ely. Don't do it. The Cozy recently opened "Grandma's Restaurant" just a five minute walk down the street. The menu is surprisingly varied and the food delicious. The Cozy Mountain is a treasure. Stay in a unique motel in a small town with a ton of history going back to the 1860s. The owner, Sarah, is a jewel. She's a friendly and savvy motel owner who aims to make sure every visitor enjoys their stay and will want to come back to the Cozy Mountain Motel. read more

Both rooms we rented were not very clean and had at least 25 feral cats roaming the parking lot. My brother left his window halfway down while we walked to the local bar&grille. When we returned a cat had got into the truck and sprayed his front seat. He had to have a detailing company clean the seats when he returned back home. read more

We loved our stay here. We had the large suite in the corner and it was just what we needed. It was two rooms, each with a queen bed. The extra space was exactly what we needed after so much time in the car together. The motel was very clean and comfortable. It's right in the thick of the historic downtown area and walking distance from anything that was open. We'll definitely be back. read more

Though I never got to stay here due to a snow storm, they were SUPER nice in helping me cancel my reservation and updated me a couple days later on the refund process. I tried changing my existing Expedia reservation to a day early over 2 months before my trip. I called the hotel and got a full voicemail with major attitude stating that "I shouldn't hang up and just call again", Huh? It is impossible to change the reservation on Expedia , & her phone number is your only recourse. I did manage to contact her before her voice mailbox was full, and got a bothered & rushed answer that she wasn't at the motel now, and couldn't change my reservation right now, and that I should text her my contact info so she could follow up when she could get to it. 2 days later, no confirmation, no answer.... I decided not to take the risk as this is the first night of a 7 day cross country motorcycle ride. Her attituded, lack of time and attention to the business of the hotel reflects a "take it or leave it attitude" I cant abide by. I cancelled my reservation. UPDATE: After owner responded to my Google review she has the gaul to text me on the reservation contact info that I will be placed on a "Do Not Rent" list in Austin. read more

Despite outward appearances (the motel appears to be housed in converted single-wide mobile homes), I found the Cozy Mountain to be a welcome surprise. Clean, quiet, and comfortable. No frills, but the room was equipped with a fridge and microwave. A Keurig is available for use in the office in the morning. Overall, I would absolutely stay here again. Of note - the motel is run by the same people that run Grandma's Restaurant up the road, and check-in is run out of there sometimes. read more

Microwave and refrigerator in room. Tiny lobby always open during business providing coffee, tea, & hot chocolate. Vladimir, one of the hosts kitty cats was a wonderful perk! Such a sweetheart and SO loving. As I was enjoying my coffee on a lovely morning after a wonderful nights sleep, what do I see but chickens! Yes! Not only did I get a great night's sleep, but I was provided morning entertainment. Those chickens were hilarious!! I neglected to get the names of hosts, but it seems they do it ALL! They were cleaning the rooms when we checked out! We will DEFINITELY stay there again, we'll ALWAYS stay there if in the area. read more

I loved this motel! Spent one night in Austin on the way to Arizona from Portland, OR. Everything was clean, the bed was comfortable (always a plus after spending all day in the car), and the internet worked great! There was also a cat hanging around, which I'm assuming "belongs" to the motel, and he was the sweetest little guy ever :) If I am ever passing through Austin again, this is definitely where I will be staying. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE!!! We booked to stay here on a road trip from Southern Utah to Northern California along historic Highway 50 in Nevada. A snowstorm prevented us from making it to Austin safely, and seeing the weather forecast, we contacted the manager Cassidy who, it turned out, was offsite over two hours away in Reno. She reassured us she would contact the owner of the motel and take care of our cancellation, which it turns out she never did. Nor would she give us the contact information of anyone onsite at the motel. Despite giving adequate heads up about our need to cancel, they did not honor this request, and we were charged anyway. When I when we arrived the next day at the motel, the owner Sarah was very rude, and again flatly refused to offer a refund. I could post more about what the motel actually looks like, but will refrain here. There appear to be alternative places to stay in Austin, or in the next town over to the east Ely. read more

Seriously, a five-star experience!! While traveling through central Nevada on a road trip with my sister, we hit a spell of shitty, freezing weather that prevented us from continuing with our camping plans. We're both broke, so price was an issue -- and consequently, we ended up staying in some SUPER-SH*TTY places! This joint, however, was AMAZING! Especially after our previous night's stay at a crack-ish motel in Hawthorne, the CMM was like PARADISE! Very cozy, very clean -- like staying at Grandma's house. I loved everything about this motel. Even the provided toiletries are upscale and fun. Water was hot and the shower pressure was great. But the price was the same -- if not slightly lower than -- the unnamed crack-ish place we stayed in Hawthorne! Go figure. The lady at the desk was super cool, as well. I would DEFINITELY, 100% stay here again. My only quibble was, there was no coffee maker in the room. They may have had coffee in the office, but I just went across the street to the International to get some, which was fabulous. So, no harm, no foul. Again, 100% endorsement here. Woops. I never submitted this review from January 2019. Oh well, better late than never. This place is like no other I have ever been and I've been around the block a time or two. It's as cozy as can be and edgy too, clean original, funky . . kind of artsy kitsch. It has a sense of humor! In early January, my daughter and I were driving our 22 year old Subaru from Denver to Davis. The weather was dry, clear, cold and glorious - every basin was dusted with snow, like a black and white photo, but roads were dry - so we decided to go Highway 50 - something everyone should do at least once. Austin was our planned stopping point. Never having been there, we picked Cozy Mountain because of other Yelpers reviews. We pulled in well after dark and were greeted by a fat gray cat as we got out of the car and then by a skeleton with a tipped jug of wine and a wine glass on a bench near the office. Sarah, the owner, who seems to know everyone in town in spite of being a relative newcomer from Oregon, was really welcoming and helpful. She told us where to go (and where not to) for a late - 9:00pm - well late by Austin standards on a way off season Friday night. The room was cozy - cozy like being a child in your grandma's impeccably clean guest room, twin beds with soft sheets and warm, well washed quilts and eclectic paint by number-ish vintage prints on the walls. My daughter and I both LOVED it! Sarah also told us how to get to the hot spring outside of town the next frigid morning and let us check out late. Every time we make this drive, we will stay in Austin for sure and hope that Sarah has an available room for us. read more

We stayed here in June 2018 and again in June 2019. The place looks a little rustic but inside is more modern, and very neat and clean. We've been in room 7 twice and the bed is super comfortable. The price is great too. We're staying here every year on our annual drive from Orange County, CA to Idaho. We again stayed here in June 2020, our third time in three years. It's a gem in the middle of no where. The rooms are modern and always have been very clean and neat. The bed is comfortable and the towels are better than at home! All this for a very good price too. We'll stay here every summer on our trip from southern CA to Idaho. read more

I was headed to Eureka, but they were full up. I've passed through Austin a million times, but never stayed there. Honestly, none of the hotels looked worth spending money on. I would rather just drive out into the forest and sleep in the car. But I thought I would check out the Yelp hive mind, and the (Cozy) Mountain Motel looked like a pretty good place. I called and Cindy quoted me $55+tax ($60 total) and saved me a room. I wasn't going to get to Austin until 10 or 11pm, which is past her bedtime. She said she would leave the key in an envelope with my name on it, and tape it to the front window. And she did! It was kind of bizarre to drive in in the dark and see your name in big letters on the window! The rooms are small, but the bed is super comfortable. The box spring and mattress are each about 10-12" thick, so the top of the bed is higher than normal. I liked it. There's a flat screen TV suspended overhead with hundreds of satellite channels. I tihink it was DirecTV. Didn't watch it much, but it worked fine. There's a laptop tray - "don't put your luggage on it!" Bathroom is functional and very clean. Windows have very nice wooden horizontal blinds. The porch/sidewalk area is decorated with interesting stuff. Looks like smokers do their business there, since there's no smoking inside. I didn't smell any smoke inside or outside. Rooms have definitely been remodeled since the '50s or whenever the motel was built. Nice baseboards and wall decorations. The door was nicely painted too, but underneath it seemed kind of like a styrofoam cooler door. Maybe like a cruise ship, or a train sleeper door. Very clean everywhere. The owner attends to the details. I definitely would stay here again if I had the need. I'm even looking at other "retro" hotels in my travels, since now I know they /can/ be updated on the inside. Everyone should mention Yelp when they visit. I told Cindy that Yelp is why I decided to stay there, and she kind of acted like she didn't know what it was, even though I mentioned the owner's comments on the review page. The one downside is parking. The parking lot has plenty of room for bicycles or even motorcycles. Not for working trucks and family SUVs and minivans. Fortunately, there's some curb space in front of the hotel and there's no worries about parking in Austin overnight. Hit this! read more

There are only a few choices for lodging in Austin and of those few choices, only one motel sells out all of their rooms every night consistently: The Cozy Mountain Motel. There is a reason for this: it is very, very clean. Spotlessly clean. The pillow-top mattresses are nearly new and very comfortable. And there is free WiFi. The rooms are cozy, very cozy. That means small. No worries! Smokers and those traveling with their pets will need to bunk elsewhere, but if that is not a deal-breaker, this is the best choice for Austin. This is indeed a cozy little oasis in that vast, beautiful emptiness that is much of Nevada. Clean, comfortable room with people happily hanging around outside their rooms at the cute tables and chairs everywhere. Nice. Like every traveler nowadays though we were all about the WiFi. Self employed people taking a working vacation NEED that Internet and unfortunately it was lacking here. Not only were there prohibitions against any sort of entertainment streaming but the connection was so weak and spotty that email was about all there was. If WiFi's not important to you then forget that and enjoy. But if it is important, you may just find yourself sitting on one of those big rocks sucking off the WiFi next door. ;-) read more

Just checked in and I'm pleasantly surprised and pleased with my room. While my room is small, it's clean, comfortable and the heater works great. It has a good sized flat screen TV and DirecTV. Short version: Clean, cozy, very nice folks. Hot water is very hot. Longer version: The room was cute and nicely decorated. Everything was clean, and checking in/out was a breeze. There was a nice pod coffee maker in the office that had a range of coffees you could choose from -- that was very nice in the morning when we left. Only thing of note -- When I turned up the hot water in the sink, it legit scalded me. Was great for tea, but potentially bad for kids or anyone who isn't quite as quick. It's definitely better than not enough hot water, so it's hard for me to say this is really a bad thing, but be careful. Would recommend, will look to book again if in the area. read more
