We had a beautifully scenic ride here. Once we arrived we found parking to be easy since it's summer and not the busy season of the area. Then once we walked up a flight of stairs we found the coffee shop and all the stores and other restaurants nearby too. Despite the name Upper Standard Coffee don't be fooled they looked as though they do a whole lot more than that. They had a case of some baked goods, waffle breakfast sandwiches and also advertised both ice cream and pizzas. Also besides coffee they had lotus energy drinks and I saw mentions of espresso martinis and other alcoholic beverages. Truly lots of options. The space inside is quite small so if it gets busy I assume the line would be outside quite quickly. They did have some chairs outside to enjoy the summer weather with your food or drink of choice. My wife and I both wanted to try one of their flavored coffee/latte drinks. Some of them being Campfire (s'mores), White Mountain (white mocha and lavender), Lavender Matcha. All of the options plus more sounded tempting. We did settle on White Mountain for my wife while I chose the French Toast. The majority of our group was ordering drinks inside but some stayed outside but the cozy firepit to warm up which was just perfect! I returned the next day on a mission for a yummy pick me up before our drive home and ordered a Nutty Vermonter Matcha Latte. The "nutty vermonter" add on includes pistachio and maple syrup. I balked a bit that the price tag was over $10 (before tip) but in a happy accident, the barista got my drink wrong (gave me a Nutty Vermonter latte sans matcha), so after she remade mine, she asked if I wanted the other one too. It worked out that I got a creamy, delicious drink (exactly what I wanted) and our driver taking us back home got a sweet pistachio latte too. 10/10 from both him and me!

Which, looking at her wedding photo on the wall leads me to believe she is one of the owners. The woman behind the counter seriously deserves an Olympic medal for somehow making a bakery feel hostile. I asked a couple of simple questions about the products and was met with so much visible annoyance that I started wondering if I was accidentally asking for state secrets instead of information about cinnamon rolls and coffee. How can you have a bakery and just visibly hate the people in your establishment?? When I got back to the car, I looked up the reviews because I genuinely thought, "Surely this can't be normal." Reader... it was and it seems to be happening at an alarming rate. Clearly she reads these reviews....clearly SHE is the problem. Apparently a bearded guy is also a total jerk but thankfully we didn't have the displeasure of dealing with him ...we saw some tall guy sans beard behind her but he kept to himself. Review after review described the exact same experience, which was oddly validating and equally disappointing. I'm just happy we parked in an actual parking spot bc apparently that's something else that's very triggering to them. It's a shame because the baked goods are genuinely tasty. But a cozy roadside bakery isn't just about great pastries. People come expecting warmth, friendliness, and a little Vermont charm. Right now, the cinnamon rolls are doing all the heavy lifting and honestly when it's served alongside that kind of coldness and attitude, they just simply aren't worth it. Hopefully one day the hospitality catches up to the baking.

They have a nice wine selection, and we saw that they're known for wood fired pizza so we ordered a margarita. Our server also suggested the seasonal app of simple heirloom tomatoes dressed with olive oil and vinegar. Those tomatoes were insanely fresh/delicious and tasted like they were picked off the vine upon us ordering. The pizza was equally as impressive and we annihilated it. We even got ice cream for dessert. Our server was super kind and attentive. We will not hesitate to come back next time we're in the area.

It's truly a pleasant little store. The lady seemed a little weirded out when my brother and I first walked in. We were in Manchester for the night, on our way back to NY from a week in Maine. She looked at us like....hmm I dunno, don't wanna say anything mean bc she wasn't mean lol, she just looked at us ... weirdly lol. Not sure how else to put it. As our visit went on she ended up being very nice. I just hope she didn't think we were in there to like...steal a couple pieces of candy hahaha. I mean, we aren't 10 years old anymore lol. She then went on to tell us about the store and how all the candy is made there (pretty sure that's what she said). I just remember thinking....how wonderful that this stuff isn't imported from places like...ugh China! They have everything! Every possible kind of candy you can imagine...she has it. She gave us a free sample and it was amazing! There are few great candy shoppes in Manchester. This one is definitely one of them. Prices are a little...high. Just a heads up if you go here. Couple things to consider as to why tho... 1) it's Manchester VT. It's a very bougie little town. Only makes sense most things are pricey there 2) privately owned 3) candy is made on site 4) it's Manchester Vermont lol Should this stop you from going? Absolutely not. The brownie is good, chocolatey and dense. They have samples of buttercrunch behind the counter and they're basically an Almond Roca. Also delicious. They are very expensive, which is to be expected from this location and the type of establishment it is. Plenty of parking out front as well. The employees aren't unfriendly, they're just not really interested in having a conversation.

This is probably the hardest review I've done, and I've taken some time to think about it before…read moredoing so. We came here for my husband's birthday dinner, as we were in the area for a getaway. We were both stationed in Germany back in the day, and he has a particular adoration for German food. And that German food MUST COME WITH SPAETZLE, which is the German version of noodles. Of course he also needs the breaded cutlet, but it all goes together for him: cutlet, gravy, spaetzle. As a vegetarian, German food is often harder for me, and so I really only had one entree choice: the potato pancake, although I believe that wasn't the official name for it. My husband's entree didn't come with spaetzle, but there was a kids meal with it and perhaps it came with other entrees, I can't remember, but we assumed he could switch his side to spaetzle and everyone would go home happy. Au contraire. We went for the appetizer, entree, desert pricing since everything was on the more expensive side and this way we'd just choose from each selection without thinking about the cost. The first problem occurred when we asked if the German pretzel, our favorite share starter, could take the place of one of our appetizers. After all it was the same price or cheaper, AND it's a gd appetizer, after all. Isn't it? No. We were not allowed to do that. So we skipped the pretzel, trying to keep our birthday cheer afloat. Tis but a fleshwound, right? Next he was told he could not substitute spaetzle for the side that came with his entree. Why not? We got a shrug. Then we asked if he could just buy a side of it. We were told it wasn't on the side list so no, he couldn't get a side of it. Imagine! You are told at a German restaurant you can't even BUY THE GERMAN FOOD YOU WANT AS A SIDE. Even though they have it there. At this point we were irritated. But it's his birthday dinner. So we just ordered from the menu and attempted to move on and enjoy the experience. Then the food comes out. It's absolutely delicious! The asparagus appetizer I'd selected was incredible, and my potato entree superb. Hub's portion of cutlet was generous, and he said his whole meal was on point. (With the exception of the missing spaetzle, of course.) We both had the apple streudel for desert, and the flavor was there, but it was super cold, unlike many we've gotten warm and delicious. We weren't a fan of it cold. The atmosphere was nice, and the waitress did a decent job of filling our orders, but seemed to have no empathy for our needs or desires. This all left me torn as to what rating to give the restaurant. The food we got was mostly amazing, except for the temperature of the dessert. I'd give it five stars in a heartbeat. The inflexibility to make the most basic efforts to keep your guests happy: allowing the pretzel to be included in the appetizer choices, and allowing a guest to swap a side for spaetzle or even allowing them to buy it as an extra side seemed to the point of insanity. Isn't the point of having a restaurant to serve people good food in a nice atmosphere so everyone is happy? Someone there has lost the plot. I'd give them a zero if I could for ruining my husband's birthday dinner with this ridiculous behavior. So I settled for a three. This three neither addresses the excellence of the food we ate or the basic failure to keep their guests happy. I hope they stay in business but learn to be flexible. It's not becoming.
