I brought him back to the shelter because I wanted them to treat him. They gave me pills in a small plastic baggie and liquid medication to administer at home. I was already concerned because the medications were not provided with prescription labels or clear medication information. I followed their instructions and gave him the medication, but his diarrhea continued. When I contacted the shelter again, I was made to feel as though the problem was our fault, and I was told that he had never had diarrhea before. I decided to look through his paperwork myself, and his records stated that he had experienced diarrhea previously, including around the time he was neutered. That was extremely upsetting because I felt like I had been given inaccurate information about his medical history. Ultimately, I had to pay out of pocket to take him to another veterinarian. The vet diagnosed him and prescribed the appropriate medication, which was something I should not have had to do after bringing an animal back to the shelter specifically because he was sick. I also later learned that he had a parasite, which was a major concern because I have other animals at home and there was a risk of it spreading to them. Please be very careful and ask for complete medical records and clear information about any medications before adopting an animal from here. Based on my experience, I would not recommend adopting a cat or kitten from this shelter without having them thoroughly examined by your own veterinarian afterward.

She also resold the puppies for much more than what she paid us. We just want people to be aware of this before doing business with her. We live in Livermore, and we made the drive to Lathrop because of the good experience in 2019. Pets & Pals is quiet, not chaotic. It's a good experience going there. The grounds are, as Rica G. noted, well maintained. The dogs get plenty of outdoor playtime and are separated by size. It's the most pleasant shelter we've visited--it's best, again, as Rica G. said, to send in your application for a pet and then make an appointment to see the pet. They bring the pet out to you for you to meet and greet. Both times, the dogs were affectionate and healthy and obviously well cared for. I would like to point out that Pets & Pals is a *no-kill* animal shelter, so all the dogs and cats have a home there if they are not adopted. Pets & Pals does an excellent job in profiling all the animals online on such sites as adoptapet.com, which is where we found both Cleo and Candy. It's well worth the drive, and the fee to adopt is quite reasonable for the area. We are waiting for Candy's spaying stitches to heal so we can remove the "doughnut cone" (she was licking the stitches, a no-no). We are happy with Candy, and she's made a home with us already, figuring out our routines and staking out her chair for "TV dinnertime." We are very glad that we chose both times to "Adopt, Don't Shop." There are wonderful dogs and cats at Pets & Pals and other animal shelters! These dogs will love you just as much and probably even more than a $3,000+ breed or hybrid dog. And you will give a home to a homeless animal companion. Have a heart, heal a pet!

When we first arrived there, we noticed how peaceful the place was - none of the incessant barking that you encounter at the local shelter. Their grounds were well maintained. We were told the dogs are let out to run in the yard for 3 hours a day. Their website has a bio on each pet so you can read a background info on each one. Obviously when it's an owner surrender they have more information on the pet, less so if the pet was a stray. But even then, they observe them while at the shelter to give you an idea what to expect. Their system makes it easy to adopt. I recommend sending an application in to get approved first. Once you've been approved, just call to make an appointment to see a dog or cat that you would like to meet. They will hold the dog or cat for you until your appointment. This is different from local city shelters where you might see a dog or cat listed online but it might be gone by the time you get there. Their adoption fee ($350) is fair as my dog was already microchipped and his shots were updated, except for rabies. I was a bit surprised that he was released without updating his rabies. All in all, I would recommend PetsNPals to anyone looking to adopt. They definitely care about the pets and try to make their shelter stay as pleasant as possible. Please adopt, don't shop for a pet.

We worked with Barbie adopting our American Bully Toby. He has been a wonderful addition to our family and it was a delight working with Barbie. Lastly, the next time you want to add a furry buddy to your family think about an American Bully (aka Pitbull). They're by far the best family dogs you could ever ask for. In November, 2021, we decided to add another fur baby to our family. We already had two senior rescues but we noticed how fast they were aging. One faster than the other, and we didn't want the younger one to be left alone when we lose the older one. We adopted Leo, an energetic poodle, chihuahua mix and he has brought us immeasurable joy! Barbie genuinely cares about her fosters! She vets adopters very thoroughly! We had a meet and greet in a park to allow all of us to be comfortable with the match. We really appreciate that because we know that when Barbie gives a family the thumbs up, she knows that rescue will be going to a loving, forever home! Leo is the sweetest puppy and all he wants to do is play. That has been challenging for us because our senior dogs don't want to play with a puppy who can be a little too strong and a little too rough for aging dogs. We spend hours a day, playing with Leo, taking him on walks and throwing a ball but it just never feels like enough. He goes to doggie day care once a week to play with other younger dogs and is so happy there. That's when we decided that Leo needs a playmate, a younger pack member who can match his energy. We reached out to Barbie and she matched us with our newest family member, Love, a Chihuhua, Shihtzu mix. Barbie assured us that she wants to play and is fearless! We worried that Leo might be too rough for her tiny size, but let me tell you, she is small but mighty! If he gets a little too rough, she tells him off and remarkably, he listens! He is a lot more gentle on Love than he has ever been with his other fur siblings or us! Since adding Love to our pack, we notice the older dogs hanging around us again, when before Love, they spent a lot of time away from wherever we were with Leo. They watch with amusement as Leo and Love play all day. Sometimes one will jump in and play for a minute and then continue to let them wear eachother out. We attended the PAWS AND CLAUS event at the shelter. My family has been adopting our animals from…read morethe Antioch shelter for years. We have always had a wonderful experience. This was our first time attending this event. We absolutely loved that they had each family go in one at a time into the private space so that the animals could feel safe and less distracted. Not only at the shelter take pictures, but they had no problem with me setting up my tripod and camera. Andrea, Santa, and the other amazing worker (sorry I didn't remember your name) not only set up such an amazing backdrop, but also did such an incredible job helping the animals to focus and do their best. My dog Truman is a super picky dog when it comes to treats and they happen to have the one brand that he likes to eat. They really thought of everything!
