I am fairly new to the Contra Costa area and so happy to have discovered the Ark Pet Hospital. When I relocated to Martínez, I could not find any veterinary clinics east of the Caldecott Tunnel in this post-pandemic environment. Everyone told me that they were not taking any new patients or there was a six-months waitlist. That was ridiculous because my cat developed crystals and needed to be seen immediately after he was cleared by the emergency hospital. So, I discovered Ark thanks to a very kind person and they squeezed me in that week of September 2022. Dr. Schlange took care of George and prescribed medicated food. He has not had a flare-up since. I adopted another cat in November 2023, who has had chronic diarrhea/soft stools since he arrived at my house. Dr. Hageman was honest and did not try to upsell me on any unnecessary services unlike my former veterinarian in Oakland (Claremont) or Sage in Concord (Sage recommended nearly $2000 worth of testing including blood work, x-rays, and ultrasound). It turns out that Syd's issues are most likely behavioral in nature and subsequently did not require additional testing since he did not demonstrate additional clinical symptoms. It's rare to find such honesty these days. Overall, everyone is super nice at Ark and there is plenty of free parking in the lot. They also have everything on site including testing of blood and stool, ultrasounds, and x-rays. The Ark is a little bit out of my way from my house, but it's worth it and the prices are incredibly reasonable

Snoopy will be missed but he was in good hands.

I had a last minute emergency need to put down a suffering pet. The compassion Dr. Hageman conveyed to me eased the grief I was under and made a horrible situation easier. This place's staff was so warm and welcoming and the facility clean and inviting. What a wonderful place to bring a loved one for anything.

Back to snuggling and fully recovered!

*THE vet to get your bunnies to get fixed.* I adopted two, two-month-old bunnies from my sister's bunnies' accidental litter. I intended to get them spayed as soon as they were old enough but when they were too young, vets I called in the East Bay all quoted about $700 per bunny, and were booked months out. (My sister said her bunnies were less than $500 each.) Before I knew it, my litter-boxed trained snuggle buns were several months old, getting aggressive with each other, and spraying all over the house. I was desperate to find somewhere to get both of them fixed together during a couple weeks I had off. I called around again, widening my search to vets all around the Bay Area. Those that took rabbits couldn't do an initial examination and surgery on the same day (two appointments = two separate fees), and the only appointments were months out, and none had availability for both girls on the same day. When I called Ark Pet Hospital, the person who answered breezily quoted about $350/bunny for both the initial appointment AND surgery, AND they had availability for both girls the following Friday! I couldn't believe it. I thought it might be too good to be true, but it wasn't! The staff and vet were as kind and capable as I could have hoped. They were so caring with my fluffs and super clear about the post-surgery pain medication and what recovery might look like. They told me they used internal, dissolving stitches, and surgical glue on the exterior- which was great because I'd read that bunnies could rip out stitches and was worried about that. Days later I had some concerns about one of the girls and Andi was very quick to respond when I emailed in photos and questions. I'm planning to bring my girls back for their next vaccinations.

My poor baby after her appointment with ARK... the cone of shame!! Lol

I have taken my pets to Oakley veterinarian center for years until last week when I had one of my pugs poke her eye and OVC couldn't accommodate a fast appointment. I was lucky I had some medicine to get me through the weekend, but Monday came and her eye was worse. I was going to take her to the ER vet, but was told to try ARK. I am so glad I did! They were able to get me a appointment next day and Dr. Hageman is just wonderful. She's a big Disney geek too! Very attentive and friendly staff. Reasonable prices and cheaper than my previous vet but higher quality care!!

Today was my first visit to this facility. I AM THRILLED with the care, attention to detail that my Australian Kelpie received. I called yesterday in hopes of getting in by the first part of the week and was told they could see her today, in the morning. She needed a complete diagnostic work up and got it in record time. From the moment we walked in, the desk staff, and the technicians were incredibly inviting, warm, and I was immediately at ease. Dr. Schlange is fabulous, gave me immediate confidence that I had made the right choice. Definitely my "go to" from this point forward! And their pricing for all that was done was very reasonable...that was a bonus I had not expected.

    My disabled animal

I have a disabled animal who they refused to see for no apparent reason today besides possibly the review I left them the last time we were seen. My dog is paralyzed from the waist down & currently is in pain & cannot move at all now. I went to this hospital to schedule an appointment as a last resort since it's down the street from my house just to get turned away for telling the truth about their establishment overpricing their clients.

Updated review: if I could give zero stars I would. the only person qualified to handle rabbit care is Andi who I believe is unfortunately just a tech. DO NOT BRING YOUR RABBITS HERE. The doctor should have no business handling rabbits. I brought my bun in for what I believed to be a respiratory infection or possibly something wrong with his heart/lungs. Dr. Lori Hagemen was dismissed and I was offered pain meds before he was even examined. Not only were my concerns dismissed but she was also extremely rough and did not take into consideration that this was a terrified rabbit as his first vet appointment. If for some reason you have to bring your rabbit here make sure Andi is in the room the entire time as she is the only person there who has enough knowledge about rabbits to be seeing them. Took him to the emergency vet and guess what? Upper respiratory infection.

they CANCELED my appt bc I was 9 minutes late and said I had to resched. luckily I found a vet who took us in. thats a bag off teeth.

i was 9 minutes late for my appt and these Heartless and incompassionate TEAM canceled my appt. I understand ppl have schedules BUT 9 MINUTES - life happens. Nurse rechecked with vet and they said I need to reschedule. my dog had absess teeth and they said NO! lucky I found a good vet at Abbey Vet Hospital who took us immediately and removed the teeth. never will I go here again. see,my pic of my dog and the absess on his face. just amazing! go somewhere else these are not serious animal lovers.

Simon was very concerned about my cat, Simon and stood at the door while he had his visit.

A God send from heaven for my pet! Great visit from start to finish. I have a nervous elderly cat who yowled all the way there and when we got into the waiting room, which puts us all on edge. Suddenly, this petite and beautiful kitty emerged from behind the check-in desk, and came right over to him. He proceeded to snuggle on his carrier as if to calm him down. You could tell he was very concerned about my cat Simon. This amazing greeter/healer cat put us all at ease. The waiting room is warm, comfortable, clean, good music not too loud, stunning live fish tank along the wall, tons of warmth, comfort, tact and LOVE. The nice-looking vet tech wore cool, purple scrubs and was extremely personable, respectful and gentle. The greeter/healer cat waited outside the glass door while Simon was in there still very concerned. I consider the vet, Dr. Schlange, to be an impressive and gifted animal whisperer who is also a pro whiz with nail clippers. They had treats in the room for Simon. As Dr. Schlange exited the other door, the mystery greeter cat came back in the room and Dr. Schlange picked him up and said, "This is our cat, Simon". I was FLOORED! They shared the same name! I asked if he always greeted every animal that came in. He said, "No, sometimes he hisses at them." DOUBLE FLOORED! When we left, Simon came back out to cuddle Simon's carrier (!!) to give him some last comfort and love. These were all very special and clear signs from God that this is the right place to brig my cat from treatment. God bless the Ark!

He ran a blood test and found that her blood glucose level was low, which was the reason for her seizures. He ensured she was hydrated and kept her there for the entire day. Dr. Sandhu explained everything he would be doing and was always professional; he truly cared about Harley's well-being. When it was time to pick her up, Harley looked better, but by that time, Dr. Sandhu had already left for the day. Dr. Navreen was the one who released Harley, and she seemed unaware of what was happening. I asked her what I should do if Harley has another seizure, and she appeared surprised, as if she didn't know what to advise. Eventually, she told me to take Harley to the emergency clinic. I explained that I had already paid this vet $1,190, so I wouldn't be able to afford the emergency care. She paused, seemingly uncertain about what I should do next. I then asked if I could have some medication in case of an emergency, and she gave me some meds. A month later, I brought my other puppy, Chip, to this vet when he was almost a month old. He was constipated, which led to dehydration and a drop in his blood glucose level. Dr. Navreen was the doctor who attended to Chip. I explained the situation to her, but she didn't seem to care about what I was saying. I asked if she would give Chip medication because I was aware his blood glucose levels were low. She waited at least 7 to 10 minutes before taking him to the back to administer the medication. Six minutes later, she came out and told me that my puppy had passed away before they could do anything. I asked her what had happened, and she mentioned that she was going to take a blood sample from the vein in his neck. When she returned Chip to me, I noticed he smelled like rubbing alcohol, which the vet tech later said they applied to his neck. However, it also smelled like it was in his mouth. I questioned how she was going to perform the blood test since the area on his neck hadn't been shaved. I cannot recommend Dr. Navreen; she is unprofessional and does not care about pets. However, I do highly recommend Dr. Sandhu for his dedication and care. Dr. Navreen does not need to work with any pets her energy is negative. She killed my puppy. I pray she sees my review.

He's an indoor and outdoor cat however since raccoons have been around my area, I've started bringing my cat indoors at night. He managed to get out and ended up being in a fight with a stray cat. Once he was inside, my family and I noticed feces on him so my son washed him. Perhaps a drop of water got into his nasal cavity and he started having trouble breathing while gagging and retching. We thought he had something obstructing his throat. When we arrived to VCA, there were NO customers in the lobby which was a relief. The receptionist moved quickly, took our cat to the back and we were brought to a exam room to wait. Soon, we were told another pet was being seen before ours because the other pet needed care immediately. That's odd as a cat in breathing distress seems to be very urgent but apparently not at VCA hospital. The receptionist kept us abreast of what was happening until she came to tell us that she was closing our exam door because an aggressive dog was coming to the hospital. I appreciated that attention but once the door was closed, it seemed like we were forgotten. After a hour and twenty five minutes, I left the exam room to inquire from the receptionist desk at which point Dr. Haley Collins FINALLY came to our exam room. Her tone was crude and unfriendly. She was curt, unapologetic and relatively rude. She wasn't forthright with information to the point that I needed to ask questions about the costs. I asked her if she could detect if there was something in my cats throat to which she replied that my cat hissed at her. Hmm, that's what cats do. After she left my exam room, I overheard her exchange with the next customers (Caucasians) in the next room and she was very different with them as her attitude was pleasant, bubbly and energetic. She was gracious and friendly unlike what she presented us. I decided not to get the care from VCA hospital and paid the exam fee which Dr Collins didn't do. I basically paid for Dr Collins to be rude to me. It always preplexes and baffles me when other marginalized people like Asians are prejudice, intolerant, and rude to other marginalized people. I have been to VCA once before and I've never experienced this conduct from a vet. It was extremely disappointing and drastically contrary to what I experienced at SAGE hospital in Concord. Thank goodness for Yelp as people need to know how disrespected customers feel at some businesses with rude and prejudice "professionals". I sent this email to them on 1/3, and I haven't received a response yet. Even when this incident occurred, the staff was attentive and went above and beyond to try to resolve the situation. I'm posting this for education to anyone who has a cat. This is a copy of my email on 1/3: Good morning, I wanted to personally write instead of posting a review on Yelp, about our experience when we brought Maple in on Sunday, December 28th. Our family has a long history of pets that we have brought in over the years, and we have never had a negative experience in any way, in fact, I have always spoke highly of the entire staff there when recommending to friends and family. I want to start off by staying that our experience on 12/28 was not a negative one with regards to the staff, but I am writing this email to bring something to your attention in hopes of educating staff to prevent this from happening in the future (and yes, it's not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" when cats are involved!). Maple has been very sick and multiple visits to her regular vet and your emergency, have happened the past month. We brought her to emergency on 12/28 in hopes of finding out what was wrong and finding a solution. Maple is a very nervous cat and doesn't like strangers, and she really did not like having anything shoved up her butt when she has been in a lot of discomfort due to the diarrhea. Maple was examined, then taken to the room for further testing. I wish I would have objected, but I trusted that staff would do their very best with regard to safety. Unfortunately, Maple escaped their hold and tried to find a place to hide, which was inside an open cabinet where there was an opening to the underside of the steel exam table. I'm sure I don't need to state how dangerous this is and could have been if the outcome was different. Cats are very unpredictable creatures, and after we were invited to go back to the room to try to coax her out, I was surprised at the lack of secure spaces for cats. I want to add that this ordeal ended up being just short of 9 hours at. We tried everything to get her out. This was an extremely stressful and upsetting time for my daughter and I and resulted in my being awake for 24 hours. My daughter ended up calling in sick for work since we left the vet around 6am. I was doing my best not to be upset at staff, but I feel like looking back, there is a bit of negligence on their part. My request is that staff is educated, more careful, and that there is some type of plan in place to mitigate any future occurrences. Maple was lucky. We were lucky that she didn't have a serious health condition and that she was healthy enough to be in that hole for that length of time. My ask is that you also find out from the manufacturer if there is a cover for the inside of that exam table, so that in the off-chance staff leaves that door open, that another cat will not have the same experience as Maple did. I look forward to your response.

I got to the appointment and I checked in . It took 20 mins for the doctor to come . The female doctor named Meaghan Duck D.V.didn't know how old my kitten was or she didn't know his breed . The only thing she did was listens to his lungs , no blood work or no x ray of chest. The antibiotics was $63.43 and the appointment was $80 . The appointment only lasted for 5-10 mins . Getting the medication took 20 mins also so it was a lot of waiting around . Also the doctor seemed to not know nothing .

Dr. Jenelle Pinon has been caring for my baby boy, Bubba, for the last couple of months, and I'm so…read moregrateful for her care and support. When Bubba was recently diagnosed with diabetes, I felt overwhelmed and unsure of what to expect. Dr. Pinon took the time to explain everything clearly and gave me treatment options, including insulin or medication, so I could make the best decision for Bubba. I really appreciated that she respected my choice and helped me feel confident moving forward with the medication route. She has been patient, compassionate, and thorough every step of the way. She answers questions without making me feel rushed and genuinely cares about both her patients and their owners. Managing a new diagnosis can be stressful, but her guidance has made it feel much more manageable. I truly appreciate the care Bubba has received and feel lucky to have Dr. Pinon helping us through this journey.

A routine dental cleaning for my two dogs turned into a traumatic, expensive nightmare due to sheer…read moreincompetence and a disgusting lack of transparency. They "only" charged $3400 for the cleanings, and failed to ask us if we are OK for them to remove all teeth from what used to be one of our dog's cute overbite. We also had to pay another $1500 for a follow-up emergency visit because they injured the other dog (and failed to tell us about it). Doctor must have a twisted sense of reality, because they told me the dogs did "fantastic" when I was called after the procedure. Dog 1: Permanent Disfigurement without Consent They extracted all six lower incisors from one of my dogs without a single phone call to discuss the necessity or get my consent. They effectively destroyed his signature look and "overbite" forever. We dropped off our cute dog and picked up a "small beast" with only two visible lower canines, all because they couldn't be bothered to pick up the phone. And I will be requesting the x-rays and get a second opinion in the necessity of the extractions, because the other incident described below shattered my confidence in their competence. Dog 2: Injury and Cover-Up While my other dog was under anesthesia, the staff managed to lacerate both of his ears while trimming his face. Let that sink in: they cut a dog that was chemically immobilized and not moving. Even worse, the doctor called me afterward and emphatically stated both dogs did "fantastic," choosing to deliberately hide the injuries. They didn't mention a word of it during the face-to-face pickup, either. Dog 2: Late night emergency follow-up visit We only discovered the injured ears after getting home. When we called, they downplayed the cuts as "no big deal" and admitted they had used skin glue to fix one cut. They didn't even provide an e-collar. A few hours later, my dog was bleeding profusely--blood was literally pooling on the floor. We had to rush him to an emergency vet where we discovered the cuts were so deep they required actual sutures. Because of this clinic's "minor" mistake, my small dog had to be put under anesthesia twice in less than 12 hours. And we had to foot a $1500 emergency bill, after an incident that traumatized our family.
