I started taking my Chameleon and Jack Russel here just towards the end of last year and so far I have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Lori and her staff. I suffer from a lot of major anxiety regarding most of everything in my life - but it's especially bad with my pets. The staff are always responsive to my concerns - and they can always squeeze me in for an appointment. Dr. Lori is honestly the best Vet I've ever had the pleasure to meet and work with. She's to the point, always offers solutions and stops me from my spiraling. Not a place for compassionate service at all! Dr Hageman literally killed our cat! After seeing her in the morning for an annual check up, she found injection site sarcoma and told us without regards to our feelings that she can fix that by amputation! Then she manipulated the apparent sarcoma with the cat screaming in pain. After getting home, the cat was foaming in the mouth ,eyes dilated and stumbling all over. They told us that the condition should pass within an hour. Within an hour the cat was dead! Unfortunately, pets are considered property in the State of California and not much you can do for bad veterinary practice! My advise: make sure your vet is a compassionate person and has good bedside manners. read more

I found this place on Yelp because they are one of the few who work with bunnies. I called and they took me in very fast . The place is in a shopping center so there was a ton of parking. The waiting room was huge and clean. The people who checked me in were friendly and very nice. The room was clean. The vet came in right away I wasn't waiting around forever. She took her time explained the shot I was getting everything went by fast. I got a vaccine for my bunny that almost no one stocks. They also had medicine if my bunny went into gi staces. They were amazing from beginning to end and the have great prices. Highly recommend this vet. read more

Terrible caused permanent damage to my baby by lack of communication or antibiotics. A very minor incident with an unnecessary treatment that caused more harm than good. Treatment caused horrible life threatening permanent damage and harm to my dog by either negligence or ego. I have filed a complaint with the VMB. Please be wary of bringing your pets here reach out to other vets in the area about their reputation don't just take my word for it. Lori Hageman should not be allowed near any animal. Please, please, please, do not subjugate your pets to the subpar treatment offered here. My dog was brought in for a hurt paw small wound around the nail and non load bearing, we took X-rays to rule out any major damage and a small spiral fracture of a load bearing toe was determined we were offered a splint and soft cast to ease his pain and allow the healing process to be smoother. We opted to splint his paw because we do not want to cause our boy any pain. When asked about antibiotics we were told that none were needed everything looks ok (the small wound around the toe). We left the office with some pain meds and a promise of a call to schedule a follow up. (Call never came) Our baby is kennel trained and we kept him kenneled while we weren't home to limit his use and his rambunctious brothers. After a few days we noticed quite a stink from our poor babies foot we immediately called and brought up the smell and the idea of antibiotics again. Again we were told not to worry about it. After another day we called again and asked to bring our boy in to be seen and change the soft cast (the smell is still there and not getting better plus we never received a call to set up a follow up visit). His soft cast is changed and the vet tech brings our boy out I ask again about antibiotics or infection or if there's a wound beyond what was visible from his toes. Was told no need for antibiotics and looks like it's "self induced trauma from licking" here comes the cone of shame! (remember only the very tip less than 1/2" of his toes are exposed. Soft cast from toes to shoulder with a hard plastic splint. Smell is still present we think ok Dalmatians can be stinky (if you know you know). We decide to trust them and return home. When my wife got home she was not convinced so once again called to inquire about any possible wound or need for antibiotics again were told no need he's fine just keep him relaxed and don't let him lick (the 1/2" or less toes that are sticking out) we oblige fast forward a few days. Smell is worse than ever we decide to remove the soft cast ourselves. I will save you having to smell the smell we smelled and unfortunately the pictures are too graphic to upload to yelp but imagine a baseball size chunk of bloody hamburger and green goo. Emergency vet on Labor Day weekend here we come. Turns out he has an infection (crazy right? Maybe 30 years in the Veterinary field isn't enough to know signs or smells of infection of course that would require Lori Hageman to admit the need to for antibiotics you know the ones we asked for no less than 3 times.) back to our poor boy, he now has emergency surgery to remove the necrotic flesh around the wound located 6" above his toes ( you know the area that's been wrapped for the last 1.5 weeks under the hard plastic splint) no possible way of "self induced trauma" there on the bottom of his leg through layers of gauze and the cone of shame. Our poor dog is now having daily wet to dry wound treatment. Requiring the old dried bandage to be ripped from the baseball sized open wound to be backed with a new one rinse and repeat for the next god knows how long so we can hopefully save his leg. All for a minor fracture of a toe that would have healed without a splint. You know what else would have helped $0.30 antibiotics. Don't worry Lori's reasoning is probably "antibiotics are over prescribed I know better". Well Lori now my dog is suffering daily torture because "you know better". We trusted you with our family member and you and your ego permanently hurt, disfigured, and nearly killed them because of your ego, negligence, or lack of give a damn. May you get everything you deserve. I know my animals will never be seen by you again because they deserve better. read more

I am fairly new to the Contra Costa area and so happy to have discovered the Ark Pet Hospital. When I relocated to Martínez, I could not find any veterinary clinics east of the Caldecott Tunnel in this post-pandemic environment. Everyone told me that they were not taking any new patients or there was a six-months waitlist. That was ridiculous because my cat developed crystals and needed to be seen immediately after he was cleared by the emergency hospital. So, I discovered Ark thanks to a very kind person and they squeezed me in that week of September 2022. Dr. Schlange took care of George and prescribed medicated food. He has not had a flare-up since. I adopted another cat in November 2023, who has had chronic diarrhea/soft stools since he arrived at my house. Dr. Hageman was honest and did not try to upsell me on any unnecessary services unlike my former veterinarian in Oakland (Claremont) or Sage in Concord (Sage recommended nearly $2000 worth of testing including blood work, x-rays, and ultrasound). It turns out that Syd's issues are most likely behavioral in nature and subsequently did not require additional testing since he did not demonstrate additional clinical symptoms. It's rare to find such honesty these days. Overall, everyone is super nice at Ark and there is plenty of free parking in the lot. They also have everything on site including testing of blood and stool, ultrasounds, and x-rays. The Ark is a little bit out of my way from my house, but it's worth it and the prices are incredibly reasonable read more

*THE vet to get your bunnies to get fixed.* I adopted two, two-month-old bunnies from my sister's bunnies' accidental litter. I intended to get them spayed as soon as they were old enough but when they were too young, vets I called in the East Bay all quoted about $700 per bunny, and were booked months out. (My sister said her bunnies were less than $500 each.) Before I knew it, my litter-boxed trained snuggle buns were several months old, getting aggressive with each other, and spraying all over the house. I was desperate to find somewhere to get both of them fixed together during a couple weeks I had off. I called around again, widening my search to vets all around the Bay Area. Those that took rabbits couldn't do an initial examination and surgery on the same day (two appointments = two separate fees), and the only appointments were months out, and none had availability for both girls on the same day. When I called Ark Pet Hospital, the person who answered breezily quoted about $350/bunny for both the initial appointment AND surgery, AND they had availability for both girls the following Friday! I couldn't believe it. I thought it might be too good to be true, but it wasn't! The staff and vet were as kind and capable as I could have hoped. They were so caring with my fluffs and super clear about the post-surgery pain medication and what recovery might look like. They told me they used internal, dissolving stitches, and surgical glue on the exterior- which was great because I'd read that bunnies could rip out stitches and was worried about that. Days later I had some concerns about one of the girls and Andi was very quick to respond when I emailed in photos and questions. Updated review: if I could give zero stars I would. the only person qualified to handle rabbit care is Andi who I believe is unfortunately just a tech. DO NOT BRING YOUR RABBITS HERE. The doctor should have no business handling rabbits. I brought my bun in for what I believed to be a respiratory infection or possibly something wrong with his heart/lungs. Dr. Lori Hagemen was dismissed and I was offered pain meds before he was even examined. Not only were my concerns dismissed but she was also extremely rough and did not take into consideration that this was a terrified rabbit as his first vet appointment. If for some reason you have to bring your rabbit here make sure Andi is in the room the entire time as she is the only person there who has enough knowledge about rabbits to be seeing them. NEVER NEVER EVER will I come here again! I was bringing all dogs here since 2005. Dr Laurie and staff were the best, always on top it! Fast forward to 2020. Brought my dog In because of a large mass in his ear and a ear infection. Was assigned to a new doctor. He took at look at my dog and started him on meds for anti inflammatory for his hips but the ear infection was never addressed. My dogs ear was oozing pus and he was in so much pain. I was told to bring my dog in for blood tests to see how his kidneys were responding to the meds...$200 each time this doctor wanted to run tests. "Hey Doctor...what about this ear infection?" He prescribes a ointment at $25 a tube and an ear wash. Really??? Should there be some sort of antibiotic for a INFECTION??? Never prescribed it but kept wanting me to bring my dog in for those $200 blood tests. Meanwhile my dog is in so much pain and the oozing pus is all over his ear. I took my dog to the emergency vet and she noticed it right away (how could you not) and immediately put him on probiotics, antibiotics and ear drops. 2-3 days later my 15 year old dog is looking SO MUCH better!! He no longer looks like he is at death's door. Like I said....I have always trusted Dr Laurie but this new one has got to go. Maybe he is used to treating stuffed animals. A God send from heaven for my pet! Great visit from start to finish. I have a nervous elderly cat who yowled all the way there and when we got into the waiting room, which puts us all on edge. Suddenly, this petite and beautiful kitty emerged from behind the check-in desk, and came right over to him. He proceeded to snuggle on his carrier as if to calm him down. You could tell he was very concerned about my cat Simon. This amazing greeter/healer cat put us all at ease. The waiting room is warm, comfortable, clean, good music not too loud, stunning live fish tank along the wall, tons of warmth, comfort, tact and LOVE. The nice-looking vet tech wore cool, purple scrubs and was extremely personable, respectful and gentle. The greeter/healer cat waited outside the glass door while Simon was in there still very concerned. I consider the vet, Dr. Schlange, to be an impressive and gifted animal whisperer who is also a pro whiz with nail clippers. They had treats in the room for Simon. As Dr. Schlange exited the other door, the mystery greeter cat came back in the room and Dr. Schlange picked him up and said, "This is our cat, Simon". I was FLOORED! They shared the same name! I asked if he always greeted every animal that came in. He said, "No, sometimes he hisses at them." DOUBLE FLOORED! When we left, Simon came back out to cuddle Simon's carrier (!!) to give him some last comfort and love. I brought my dog in 6 weeks ago for excessive ear scratching. I ask for bravecto. The Dr never looked at her ears. Gave me the bravecto and did not even look at her ears. No she has a hematoma in her right ear. They want $500 to fix her ear. I said that I was not happy because of the last visit. The Dr came in and looked in her eyes. The took an ear sample. Which I said her assistant already has one and she said she needed one. She left the room and left the ear sample The assistant came in and said it could be upto 500 or as low as 425 . I explained that I was not happy that the last visit the ears were not looked at. She asked it I wanted to proceed. I asked to wait for the report on the ears. Again I mentioned that I was not happy that the Dr took another ear sample and then left it in the room. I said I guess my only recourse is to leave a bad review. The assistant left. The Dr Hagerman storms in like a bull in a China shop and rambling that she didn't need to look at her ear. She has 30 year experience. I said congratulations but you still did not look at her ear the last time. Then she start hammering me that she doesn't like to be be threatened. I never did. She said that I was going to leave a bad review and that is a threat and she can no longer help me and to get out of her office. She said to never come back ever and get out. I took my 9 month bunny Sweetcheeks to get spayed here at Ark Vet. This is the only rabbit savy vet in the area that i can trust!! i took her here for a check up when she was about 4 months and they were so sweet and the owner seems very happy to meet new clients which is so sweet and she does all the surgeries so its so refreshing to get to know that the person who opened this facility also does the surgeries and knows about the animals and so she knows the standard she has to show for her business! anyways, after calling around for different prices for a rabbit spay (not that many places near here), Ark vet was the most affordable and even though there was one $20 cheaper, i declined because they would not send me home with medication which is a big red flag. if you do your research, medication is important for the next few days in order for them to recover comfortably. Ark vet answered everytime i called and answered my every question and constantly reassured me that "shes in good hands". and you know what? they were completely right !!! i dropped her off at 8:45 am and picked her up and 4:30 and were so good at reassuring that she was okay because i was so nervous since its so dangerous for rabbits to go under anesthesia. but the stitches looked great and though she was really lethargic she was still aware. i called twice to ask questions and they happily answered them. the next day they called me to check up how she was doing which made me feel so good that they care about her even if it was to document for the owner. I recommend all rabbit owners to Ark Vet because not only are they affordable but theyre so sweet and sympathetic that even the sound of their voice when they answer sounds so nice and enthusiastic unlike most vets. Only place i trust with my little fur baby (they love calling the animals "your baby") ! Side note : rabbit owners please do your research and have things prepared for your rabbit such as having critical care on hand which they also sell! Know your rabbit and be prepared. My sweetie wouldnt eat no matter what AS I SUSPECTED SHE WOULD BC SHES A BRAT (a cute one) but when i learned the hang of how to give her the medication in a way where it wont stress her out , i gave her water through the syringe, crushed up half a oxbow digestive support and mixed it with water and sucked it into the syringe and i later also mixed oxbow critical care with warm water and syringe fed her it (she absolutely loved it !!!). Knowing how my baby is, i knew she wouldnt eat even after given the pain medication so i knew to have these things on hand and what to do. Since she wasnt eating hay or her veggies it made me really worried since she hadnt eaten since before her surgery (dont withold hay or food before spay). unfortunately ark vet isnt 24 hr and i called so many other 24 hr "rabbit savy" vets in the east bay, south bay, you name it and no one could give me advice but also said they didnt see rabbits even tho it says they do so like i said have things prepared because rabbits need to eat fiber to not go into GI Stasis which is deadly. I wish I could give waaaay more stars then what's available. All of the ladies and gents that work in this office are amazing being who care about every animal like as if they are theirs. I have a trouble child and Nikki(a tech there), just loves him to pieces and I love seeing her face light up when she sees him! They helped us with our fight against parvo with our puppy, Dr.Schlang is an amazing vet who listens to your concerns and looks at every avenue for a treatment or solution. He even answers emails after hours when he doesn't need to. This whole staff is literally worth the drive from Rio Vista because they are the only vet I trust with my fur babies and they are pretty thankful for it! Our puppy was a little scared today and they gave her tons of loves and coos at her to make her happy and excited again and remember she is okay. I seriously couldn't ask for a better vet. I really liked this place the first couple times I've brought our cat here, but now I have a new perspective on the Ark pet hospital. The front staff are friendly, but we're basically implying I'm lying. The lady did not believe me that I was told one price of 600, for my total. I was shown a price of around 571.00, for my kitties thinking wow that's a lot maybe I can get a deal to spay them both, but, they don't have any discounts. so I still decided to spay them, thinking okay my male was about 300, so I guess that's right... 600. while checking out it was around 1,200.00 The price was for each kitten individually and I wasn't told that. I signed away... all the paperwork that was jumbled on the table. I never even saw two number's... just the 571.00. Unfortunately the papers weren't separated and I wasn't told about 600 EACH. I even asked okay so the total will be around 600, at that point The tech could have told me no around, 1,200. Of course I paid the amount. I did ask to talk to the Vet she is the owner of the place and I was told no. She's not Available and doesn't do that(speak to us about these issues). To me she was so unprofessional, from the moment she walked in to examine the kitties. I didn't know she was the vet, she didn't introduce herself, like the male Dr we had prior. She has no manners, is disrespectful, handles the kitties roughly and frankly I'm disappointed in her behavior as a dr. Being the owner, she must think she can treat her customers like crap and they'll still bring their pets. That will not be the case and she will lose clients, conducting a business like this. I will bring my kitten bk to get their stitches out and never come again. I'm an honest person who doesn't like to be treated otherwise. I don't mind paying like I did, but I know what I was told, I'm sure it was a accident, but no one apologized, they just tried to "ACT" like I was told the amount"S". This is bad practice and could have been handle differently. The tech did not deny the fact that I mentioned to her "okay so I can plan on paying around 600 total". She just said we never give a total, but I'm sure she's aware of what happened and she knows I wasn't shown the papers separately, she knows she had them all jumbled and mixed up. Hmm idk ‍ They added extra info AFTER I signed... like chipped not chipped. I'm telling you it was a mess, with one kitten climbing in their cabinet on the left hand side of the sink. They are extremely active kittens but I was not TOLD SHOWN OR anyone EXPLAINED ANYTHING ABOUT TWO NUMBER AMOUNTS! I would take a polygraph; I was shown ONE number. ONE AMOUNT for both kitties. There were papers over lapping the top of two of the other papers... I knew I should've pulled them out and looked at everything, but by law they're supposed to explain. We did a drop off and pick up went smoothly - 1st Time paperwork took a little longer but went well. They accept CareCredit. He was prescribed antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection and after 1 week of not getting better I called again for a follow up appointment that also went well. This time the doctor called me herself and explained things better.. she gave us 3 scenarios and decided on trying a stronger antibiotic which now our guinea pig is much better. I highly recommend this Hospital for your pets. I only gave it 4 stars because it is a little high on the price for office visits.. it cost me double for the guinea pig to be seen than what we purchased him for. I've been going to Lori since about 1990 when she was in Oakley at a different vet . She was always very kind and accurate. She saved my Rottweiler when he got overheated and then went to DIC . Eternally grateful, I had him 13 years ! Fast forward, we got an English Mastiff and I don't or won't trust anyone else with him. We love our dog more than people so the Ark it is ! I brought my guinea pig here because he was very sick. He wanted to eat but his body was too weak. He would not move, not even to use the bathroom, and he was potty trained so he knew to go to the bathroom on the bedding. When I called, they said they would not have an available appt until 4:30pm, but when I specified what my piggy's symptoms were, she decided that there was something at 10:15am. -- I'm confused on how you got from 4:30pm to 10:15am suddenly. Once I got there, my piggy still was not moving too much. He was also drooling and Doc decided that it could be some dental issues but didn't bother to check in his mouth. So then the assistant came in and we talked about payment... but without even reassuring that what my piggy's problem was. I asked if the Doc can come back in and check in his mouth and she said his molars were over growing and cutting into his tongue and that this must have been going on for quite some time. She then decided that antibiotics was not going to be needed and to hand feed him critical care. He definitely wanted to eat because he was trying to eat it. But I think she could have sent us home with antibiotics as well. It might have kept him alive because he died soon after I came home from the vet. I called them to let them know my piggy died when I got home, but they offered for me to pay even more to get him cremated. I mean, come on, I just took him to this vet then he dies, and you want me to pay even more to cremate him. She definitely missed something. I don't recommend this vet office if you're bringing an exotic pet. Find a place that truly specializes in exotic pets. read more

I take my two pups here over the last couple years. I am thankful for them because when I use to go to my primary he was typical good but was not as thorough as Ark. I always went to ark for a second opinion. I am thankful them. Now they have become the primary. Thankful for Dr. Schlange and his crew. He always hears my concerns and assists in breaking down issues and giving pharmacological and/or non-pharmacological interventions. For example I have a old female corgi who has sensitive skin and will have flare up with a rash to certain foods or snacks. Dr. Schlange and dr. Hageman are quick with assessment and suggestions on what I can do and if I need a medication they advise me the med and regimen and set up follow up if needed. When I call to get my dogs in for an appointment for an issues, they have availabilities sometimes the same day which is great. They try there best to accommodate around my work hours and let my parents (pet sitters) bring them in when I'm not available. Staff is friendly and always welcoming. Plus when my female got hurt and I had to take her to Sage the urgent care vet. All my dogs medical records were available for the Dr. to see. So it's nice have my animal medical records available for the doctors so I don't have bring paperwork if there was something that happened and the doctor are up to date on my dogs care. They are awesome. My dogs love the staff. My dogs are always happy and they always get better. read more

I've taken both yorkies to Ark and every visit we received top notch service from the the front desk staff, vet techs and vets. My Yorkie James developed a severe eye infection on an eye that was diseased for awhile and needed it removed. They treated James (who was 15) with the utmost respect and kindness, the eye socket healed great without issue. Just 7 months after we put James down, our 11 year old Yorkie developed a tumor on his pancreas. We met with Dr. Schlange who provided me with all of the options without pushing aggressive treatment. Soon after the diagnosis we sadly had to put Jax down. Aloura and Nikki were the most kind hearted humans as my husband and I were extremely emotional. My wife, daughter and I took our sick pet to this pet hospital. Our dog was 16 years old and got real sick sudden she had stopped eating and lost a lot of weight in about 7-10 days. We took her in and the front desk was warm and nice. They called us in to see dr hageman and she came in and looked at the dog and at us and she was very dry. She showed no emotion towards us but made it feel like it was our fault that our pet for 15 years was our fault. She was very uncaring and sympathetic. She never said how sick our dog was. It wanted us to put her to sleep or do test to try and get her better. We left not knowing what was. Eat for our pet. Maybe we were the wrong color I don't know but I will never recommend there hospital to anyone and will tell my union hall brothers and sisters who lives in Antioch to never bring there pet to that location. I have been with the Antioch Veterinary Hospital for almost 3 decades and and got tired of their customer service so I contacted Ark Pet Hospital and brought my German Shepherd 6 month old puppy in and Ark Pet Hospital did fantastic! They were extremely friendly. My shepherd has not been very friendly with strangers and their technician came out and got him without any incidents. BEWARE !!! BEWARE!!!BEWARE!!!BEEARE!!!BEWARE!!! My neighbor took his perfectly healthy 2 year old dog into this slaughterhouse to be fixed. Came home sickly and died after being in their care for a routine surgery. The lady on the phone said she died because of the surgery. She had 0 issues and now the family is being ignored when asking questions about their lost family member. Shame on you ark! If you love your animals don't bring them here! read more

Hands down the best vet in the area, my cat had all his little teeth pulled and everything went flawless, they kept me informed the whole time. The facility was very clean and organized and that's always key with me. All the staff are on point and know what they are doing there. Very happy to have found this place thanks to a friend. Took my 14 year old dog in, it was our first visit. Everyone was great! Very personable, friendly and they really went out of their way to comfort us. Moderatly Expensive, labs, one weeks of medicine and x-rays over $500. read more
