I started seeing Dr. Coyne about a year ago. After a string of internists who were impossible to get appointments with I was relieved to find him, because his office is very flexible when they need to be. This is what I need in an internist, because sometimes I get sick! I'm pretty surprised with how many other internists have no time to see patients that require immediate medical attention (but not severe enough to require the ER). Now I know if I get a sinus infection and really need to see someone fast, I will have that opportunity. It's a load off my mind. The environment in the office is very intimate... it does have a nostalgic feeling that the other reviewers spoke about. To my knowledge there's only one other person who works there, a very nice and competent person who handles the front desk. All the scheduling, referrals, etc. She's very friendly, which is obviously not "required" but is a definite plus in a time in healthcare when I can normally expect someone handling scheduling to seem both cranky and heartless. Dr. Coyne is not quick to hand out something that you don't need, but if you do need it, you get it. He's careful to track medications and medical history, which makes me feel very secure. Bedside manner is good. He doesn't coddle you but he's not rude, he's just professional. I noticed he's pretty sensitive and non-judgmental when it comes to handling delicate situations. I have a condition that can sometimes get much better with diet and weight loss. He managed telling me that without making me feel I was a lazy slob. :-P That is not an easy conversation to maneuver so I was impressed. He's great! I'm grateful to have found him. read more

He took amazing care of my elderly mother before illness prompted his sudden retirement. He was always caring and compassionate as well as knowledgeable. As her Primary MD, he truly coordinated her care: assisting her to get the cataract surgery she needed and helping us to obtain an alternating compression boot for her lymphedema leg. I believe he truly helped to extend her lifespan and we only wish we could do the same for him. read more

Went for a job physical. between his office and secretary, it gives you a feeling of nostalgia, back to the days where a doctor could potentially be a friend of yours for 20 years. Not the billing factories most doctors offices have become. For this, I enjoyed going to Dr. Coyne. read more

Dr Coyne was very rude on the phone when I told him that he was a referral from a friend. His secretary "Rosemary" acted like she was surprised that anyone would even call her. She was even more rude to me when I called and ask to speak to Dr Coyne and told her that I would wait as he finished up with a patient. Terrible Practice and I would not recommend to colleagues, friends or family. Learn how to speak with respect towards others, little did he know he was speaking to another MD. He asked me what I was doing even calling him! Any advice would be to get rid of Rosemary since she clearly can not act professional on the phone and maybe it would help his practice if he must continue it. GOOD LUCK!!! read more

this man is a terrible doctor. me friend recently went to him to get tested for the herpes virus, and was advised not to get the test, for, since he was showing no symptoms, knowing he had it would cause him guilt that he would otherwise not have when he was with women. It is my common opinon that it should be in a doctor's best interest to care about the health and well being of his fellow humans. although my friend was showing no symptoms, he very well could have passed on the virus to a woman, who experienced extreme and painful symptoms for the rest of her life. this doctor's behavior was irresponsible and innappropriate. i feel as though hes worthy of losing his license to practice medicine. fortunately my friend did not take Dr. Coynes advise, and he chose to have the test done anyway, but this was not without condescention and scrutny of his decision on part of the doctor. i recommend that everyone stay away from Dr. Coyne. he probably has herpes. if you need an internist, check new york magazine's best doctors in new york list. my father is on it, and hes a real doctor. read more

Going to Dr. Coyne is like stepping into a time machine in every good way. The staff consists of himself and his receptionist. He provides all of the care, including drawing blood, etc. Takes his time to discuss your condition. My care has been routine and I have never had a problem with treatment. If you want personalized health care this is the practice for you. read more

Dr. Coyne has a strange personality. Sometimes he can be okay, but has an attitude. He can be rude at times and acts like he is doing the patient a favor by being in the office. I would never recommend him to anyone. Perhaps he should retire. Jim. read more

I am very happy to have Dr. John Coyne as my primary caregiver. He is thorough, patient, kind and not inclined to over-prescribe or push drugs. (Nor is he the kind of doctor who accepts freebies from pharmaceutical companies.) He is a good doctor who, I hear, will even do house calls. read more

Dr. Coyne has been my primary care physician for a few years, and I have always found him to be caring and thoughtful. He isn't in a rush and always takes his time. I have recommended friends to him who have also been happy with his care. read more

I'd give him zero if I could. I went to this guy twice, changed jobs and health insurance and he was on my new plan and in the neighborhood, so I thought, why not? First time I went in for a physical, I told him I was on Synthroid for a small node on my thyroid, which had been detected with tests and scans. He made me stand up and tilt my head back, ran his hand up and down my throat, told me he felt no node, and that he was taking me off the Synthroid. I should have known better - how was his hand better than a nuclear scan? - but i went along with him, I thought maybe the node was gone. More on that in a minute. There was something about his manner I didn't like, I found him very arrogant and dismissive, but I went back a second time; when he called me in to his office to discuss why I was there, while I was telling him what was bothering me he was reading someone else's files. I stopped, seeing he was not really listening to me, and he said, keep talking. I said, no, you're not giving me your full attention, I'll wait until you're done reading. He got a little snarky, and that was the last time I utilized his "services". Fast forward about five years, I was having many medical issues which were traced back to a node on my thyroid, a node which had grown so large it took five hours to surgically remove it, which had grown so large it took not one, but two plates to scan it completely, which had grown so large my surgeon was convinced it was cancerous. He told me that when someone has been taking a med for a while, if they stop they should do so gradually, weaning themselves off it, that doing so all at once would be a shock to the system. He theorized that the node was being kept under control by the dosage I was on, that the instantaneous removal of the med triggered its growth, and that there was no conceivable reason why I should have been taken off it. Looking back now, I realize that Dr. Coyne may very well have been one of those doctors who got paid by the insurance companies to get their patients off of meds, and who sold me out so he could get a check from Oxford so they would not have to pay for my Synthroid. I can't prove it, but there is no other reason why he should have just summarily removed me from a prescription medication that another doctor and tests had determined I needed for my health.
