No worries though, the whole staff is incredibly kind and welcoming to everyone. I like Dr. Spar because he actually takes the time to listen to what's going on with you, run the proper tests, and then suggests both traditional and holistic approaches to being healthier. I feel lucky to have had a doctor that doesn't seem rushed and asks me about my mental health as well and makes appropriate suggestions. Would definitely recommend Dr. Spar. read more

I don't normally take the time to write Yelp reviews unless I feel that the organization has performed exceptional service. I have been going to another primary care physician for over 8 years. Over the last few years, I have become increasing frustrated at my doctor. He had started incorporating cosmetic procedures into his business which I believe took focus away from the primary care. In recent years, I have seen common mistakes made more than once and issues relating to insurance (especially being reassured that lab work was in-network and found out twice that it wasn't with a $300 additional fee each time). Co-incidentally, I found Dr Spar on LinkedIn and liked his general approach to medicine (more holistic approach). I met with him before the holidays and found him to be knowledgeable and friendly. The consultation was not rushed and he took the time to understand my medical history. I have since found out from Dr Spar that a medicine I had been taking for 3 years requires regular body function testing every 3 months which my other doctor was doing once per year. This is just one example where I feel that he is more concerned and focused with patients and primary medicine compared to my previous Dr. With regards to insurance, he assured me that all lab work would be performed in house or with an in-network lab so that I would not need to pay any additional amounts. I recently received explanation of benefits from my insurance company and as per Dr Spar's reassurance, all lab work was covered and paid for. I was sorry to leave my old doctor after establishing a multi-year history with him. However, I am looking forward to establishing a new professional medical relationship with Dr Spar. Dr. Spar is not my assigned physician, but I was able to get in there for a visit when Dr. Rodriguez was on vacation. This is at the Sunset location in West Hollywood. My visit with him was very pleasant and a very comfortable experience. He's friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. I've met some terrible doctors out there who can't communicate to save their lives, in turn making it a terribly awkward visit. He's definitely not one of those. Highly recommended! read more

I have to agree with the other reviewer. Dr. Spar was quite impressive on every level. Here are a few of the things that stood out to me during my initial visit: 1) The staff was genuinely raving about him, so that already tells you quite a bit about his personality and abilities. BTW, the staff was extremely welcoming, too. 2) I have a complex medical history, talk a mile a minute, and am often all over the place when discussing physical issues (non sequiturs galore), but he listened very patiently and carefully to me. I'm sure a lot of doctors just zone out when I talk, and sometimes I wouldn't blame them, but Dr. Spar asked pertinent questions and had input on/advice regarding many things I said, which really showed his level of interest and ability to absorb information quickly. I stress GOOD LISTENER. The office was rather busy the day of my appt., yet I didn't feel rushed at all. He has a calm demeanor and spent more than enough time with me. 3) He was very respectful, with a warm bedside manner. That almost seems rare these days! A class act. 4) His credentials are clearly very impressive, but he was humble and seemed open to ideas (IMHO, another sign of high intelligence, both "regular" and emotional), and you've got to love the "integrative" aspect to his practice as well. 5) He talks to you (not AT you) on a human level. He gave me some good tips on how to better adapt to Los Angeles. And like Robert C. said, he actually asked what he can do for me. Strongly recommended. read more

All too often doctors can be judgmental and pushy, but I really feel like we've found the right doctor for us. We have conversation during our appointments and I never feel lectured. My experience with Dr. Spar was great! I really like this office a lot and I have found my new primary care doctor in Dr Spar. He is very personable and seemed to really listen to what I needed. I went in for a physical and he took his time to listen and I didn't feel rushed at all. He's an awesome doctor and I would recommend him to anyone! FYI: They have parking under the building, it is paid parking, valet, not too expensive. Of course you have the choice to park in the surrounding area. Great office! read more

Dr. Spar is great, but getting in to see him isn't easy or quick. The real problem I have with his office, which seems to be a consistent theme with medical practices in LA, is that communication is poor. It's very hard to get an actual person on the phone to get refills, ask questions, or resolve billing issues. Leaving voice mails doesn't always get you a return phone call. Trying to get prescriptions refilled is difficult to impossible. They have a "patient portal" that is supposed to improve communication, but I have found questions or messages sent through it are ignored or answered too late to be helpful. Dealing with this office is like dealing with a government agency, such as the DMV....hit or miss. What a shame. read more

I don't believe the problem here is with Dr. Spar (who seems by all accounts, including mine - somewhat - a very competent physician), but the clinic there as a whole. As such, unfortunately, problems with a clinic can, in turn, affect one's experience of the clinician directly - unfairly or not. Beginning with no parking (I prefer to park on Doheny and walk it; if not be prepared to pay premium Sunset rate parking fees running into $8 and $10 and above) and then, most importantly, dealing with reaching the office itself (post appointment). Primarily, the issue in post appointment follow-up is office reach-ability, which becomes a quagmire and phalanx of voice mails (once was unable to even reach that) and an inability to reach anybody who (outside of one super awesome lady who, although rushed, has this magic ability to crash through all dreck and really get follow-up) and ends in a dispiriting nightmare of unreturned calls (if you can get through and don't get this lady) and unreturned messages. There is an online portal encouraged as a means of reaching the doctor, but alas, as a communication vehicle, it does not improve on these results. The phone msgs and email return rate there is roughly 30%, indeed, if at all. On two occasions to date, refill requests required a full five days of daily requests and rejections and confusions and one vital med in particular was virtually out before response (I keep 5 days ER back-up) for two days. This lack of follow-up through staff ("I will follow up with this personally and call you back directly" - which then never happens) and the frustration of going to the pharmacy to be told it was "rejected" and then unable to determine why and then being unable to reach the office on a repeated basis has the effect of coloring the perception of the physician experience directly. This may be because Dr. Spar does not work through that office full time but helps run (or runs) a clinic in Venice; I don't know. He is not in the office M-F. Appointments there, in turn, are never as immediate as one would need or hope, as, indeed, if one cannot get a response, one has to make an appointment to get the med which keeps being rejected, and sometimes 5 to 7 business days out is too long. So, if you are shopping for a good clinic, if you have relocated or your regular doctor is no longer in practice, etc, and these peripheral needs are important to you, then I am not sure that this is the clinic for you, whether you choose to go with this physician, or (via proxy I assume) any of the other doctors in the clinic, though their availability may be better. More specifically, this review is not meant to disparage or impugn the skills or character of Dr. Spar in any way, as he is a good listener with a quick, agile (if not somewhat rushed) examiner who listens to a patient's needs and dialogues well (although some of the questions asked have been answered on previous visits) and who moves quickly (so much so that you may be left in the exam room wondering what to do and where to go next!) As an aside, Tyler at the front is a super sweet dude who deserves kudo's for having to wrestle with such an overload of work (and retains his good humor while being so shorthanded) at this very bustling, very busy urban clinic. read more

Whew!! After searching for a good doctor to take care of my special needs, I finally found Dr. Spar. Starting with the front desk, Tyler (who checked me in) was as nice as nice can get and made me feel extremely comfortable on my first visit. Once in the room with Dr. Spar, we went over my history, medications, etc, and he spent a fair amount of time getting to know me and my requirements as a new patient. After our visit I knew I had found my new doctor. I'm looking forward to my next visit..and by the way, did I mention how nice the office and staff are? Awesome, awesome, awesome!! read more

I know a lot of doctors, and of course being a bit of a hypochondriac, I've seen a lot of doctors. Dr. Spar is one of the most amazing health care professionals I've come across. He's very kind, and very very very smart. He's patient and puts in the time and effort to make you feel like you're being taken care of. His staff is sweet, professional and pretty cool. You can tell how awesome he is just by the way he treats his staff. I talk a lot and ask a lot of stupid questions, and he takes the time to answer all my stupid questions, and come up with solutions for them. His web based platform makes it easy to email him questions, fill prescriptions without the paperwork or having to go to the pharmacy, make appointments, etc. He's not here to rip you off or waste your time. He knows the answers and he's here to give them to you. He really just wants to help. He's awesome. P.S. I don't usually write yelp reviews. I've seen several doctors over my life, some good some bad. I must say Dr. Spar is an excellent physician. His bedside manners are second to none. He is genuinely concerned with your healthcare and well-being. He is receptive to all your questions and concerns and will attempt to address every issue you have directly. I had seen him at the Venice Family Clinic with symptoms of a lingering chronic cough and after a few visits he was able to correctly diagnose the condition and currently, with the proper medication, the issue seems resolved. Unfortunately, he has moved on to private practice elsewhere but the current doctor that has taken over in his stead seems equally skilled. I believe Dr. Spar made a concerted effort to leave his patients in the best hands possible as he made this transition. A sign of a doctor who truly cares for all his patients. On a further note, I had noticed an overall professionalism and kindness at this clinic; from the receptionist, to the nurses, and doctors. A standard of care set by the example Dr. Spar exuded through his strong work ethic and sincere patient interaction. If you are fortunate to have Dr. Spar as your primary care physician, rest assured you will have a competent, seasoned doctor who will advocate for your healthcare needs, not a guarantee...even in the field of medicine. read more

Dr. Spar is a fabulous Dr. I have only been with him a few years and think he is just great. His knowledge of the human body and finding healthy ways to stay healthy makes him stand out. Nutrition and exercise are his main methods of keeping his patients healthy and only resorts to medication when necessary. His holistic approach to health and life in general makes him a gem of a doctor. He actually listens to you when you discuss your health- makes eye contact and is one doctor that does care about his patients and a great deal!!! A free clinic would offer better care... seriously. Zero bedside manner. More concerned with his "well deserved vacation" than making sure his patients were covered (to get lab results after a month of nonstop tests). And when you call him out on his poor care, you do not get any thoughtful acknowledgment, but instead are told they're not a concierge doctor. I wasn't aware expecting lab results in a timely manner was suddenly a specialty service (when they sat there for 5 days waiting to be read). And being told my results didn't need to be processed while he was out of town... I wasn't a priority... really? After a month of tests... the test that said "you're fine" didn't matter? Your vacation mattered more than my peace of mind? I can not stress enough how horrible this office and doctor was. From day one I could tell it was a factory... they do not like questions... but I stayed for 8 months. Lesson learned. read more
