Someone else had a BLT, it was average. Another had a club sandwich. It was huge and delicious, we all wished we had ordered one. The fries were okay but slightly undercooked. I was hesitant to give a review on this place as I'm not really sure how it will impact the business. I chose to eat here in Duchesne as I was driving through believing the small business community could use some help. The folks at Cowans want to offer good service to the community and a few changes would really be helpful so they could be better. First of all the french fries were very good. As they are homemade and always tasty. It looks like most of the food is quite good and fine for a small town. I had the chicken fried steak and it was good with the fries. If the owners would just spend a little bit of money improving the booths and maybe the carpet, this place could shape up pretty quick. I just can't give it a higher rating in the condition it is in. If I were in a big city, this cute little cafe might only get three stars based on the food, but they eat an extra one for small-town charm. Dinner salad = a pile of iceberg lettuce with a plop of dressing. Mashed potatoes = fake French fries = awesome Fish & chips = A+ Service = fast, friendly, and accurate Ambiance = small-town charm with a touch of kitsch We would definitely stop here again! I placed a telephone order on Friday 06/11/2021 at 7:00PM and was extremely disappointed with the food, as well as the service... 30 minutes to get my food, and when I got home it was not even close to what I had ordered. When I called them to let them know what happened, the wait staff proceeded to argue with the cooks while I was on the phone, and basically had a screaming match. I returned the food, and had to wait for the order to be prepared a second time, I arrived home and although I received the right food, it was not prepared properly, and the special requests were not followed which made one of two meals inedible due to a food allergy... Let me start by saying I really liked this place. My wife and I stopped in on our way to Colorado and it was one of two eateries in the small town. We were excited to try some small, home town cooking. We ordered the biscuits and gravy along with pancakes. They were both good, better than average and worth the money. The staff was also very friendly. However, we waited for over 60 minutes just to get our food which is not ok, almost ever. Every at a fine dining restaurant the food comes out quicker. We had a 7 month old baby and keeping him occupied for an hour to get our food took all the phone out of it. I like the look and the service. We ordered chicken tenders and they were maybe 3 inches long, made out of nugget material instead on real chicken and there was 3. They had no flavor and were similar to fast food nuggets. The fries were hot, fresh, but greasy and not cooked right. They needed to be fried twice. We ordered the mammoth burger and it was over cooked dry and there was no seasoning on it. Not even salt. On either meal! Atmosphere (sound) is bad. Need music playing and something to block some of the kitchen noise. Just not an enjoyable experience for us. We came because were playing football and figured we'd eat here instead of before we left. We'll have to try the other two places on the next games but as of right now we will not be driving to Duchesne for date night anytime soon. From reading other post breakfast is what they're good at. Some suggestions would be to revamp the menu, get real chicken strips, season things, don't smash the burgers it takes all the juice out of them, turn on a radio or a playlist, add a swinging door to kitchen, and cook the fries right. read more

My meal began with the Creamy Potato Soup. I enjoyed this very much. The potatoes were cooked to perfection! My fish in the Fish and Chips was nice and crispy. The tartar sauce was perfectly seasoned. I have a weakness for real potato French Fries, and Cowan's were delightful! They brought out two huge homemade dinner rolls. My husband ordered the Top Sirloin dinner which consisted of a top sirloin steak (over cooked), seasoned green beans and instant potatoes with brown gravy. Yes, I did say instant. That was our only disappointment. It DOES seem that a restaurant like Cowan's should serve fresh mashed potatoes. Other than that though, our experience was great! Jeez, does no one eat here? Why no reviews???? We were just passing through, trying to get from Vernal to Orem when, around lunch time, this town popped up. There didn't seem to be a lot of choices in this small town but there were a couple of parking spots and an OPEN sign in front of this small place. We stopped and found that about five tables were occupied, and we were seated and waited on quickly. My wife had the "lunch special" which was a simple "cold plate" with lunchmeat, cheese and tomatoes. I had some tortellini soup, a turkey sandwich and some potato salad. The food was all good and seemed fresh - the one complaint I had was that there was a little too much salt in the soup. Otherwise A-okay and the potato salad was some of the best I have had in a cafe. The place was clean and simple and the service was good and our waitress was attentive and kept the water and tea full. It is on the main drag through town but is in a row of storefronts along the sidewalk so it doesn't stand out in a particularly noticeable way. Look for it. Just passing through Duchesne well after8pm on a Thurs night and it looked like it was gonna be Cheezits and Diet Coke for us, but then we saw Cowan Cafe was open. Hubby had grilled ham n cheese on sourdough, and he said it was fine. I had Mammoth burger n fries. Burger was fresh, flavorful and cooked properly. Fries were hand cut and excellent. My husband and i finally went in to give it a try. It was the most disgusting breakfast EVER. I'm pretty sure they used government cheese in the undercooked omelette, burnt toast and raw hash browns. I was working at duchesne high school and looked up a place to eat. I saw that this place had great reviews and decided to try it out. It was amazing! I first had the fish and chips for lunch. The tartar sauce was the best I have ever tasted. And the fries were actually real potatoes! Everything tasted so good that we decided that before we leave town we would stop there one more time. I chose to get the mammoth burger with a fried egg. That was also just as good as the fish and chips. The most disgusting place I've ever had the displeasure of encountering. It's humid (which I thought impossible in Utah), greasy, and just terrible. Took over an hour for a grilled cheese and a side of fries, which was cold when I got it, and to top it all off, a smushed fly was on my plate, drowned in grease. On my way from Steamboat Springs to St George, riding my motorcycle in the rain, I probably did not look like the most desirable customer. Grimy and dripping wet. However, I was welcomed with a smile by the hostess, who doubled as my server. It's a small run of the mill local restaurant. My breakfast was very good. A large slab of juicy ham steak, eggs, hash browns, toast and coffee. Simple enough, but something the Dennys of the world screw up on a regular basis. This meal was close to perfect. The ham had great flavor, eggs were done just right, hash browns were as they should be, crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle, the toast was just that, toast and the coffee was hot and fresh. I would have given an extra half star, had there been marmalade or fruit jams with the toast and not just grape jelly. The service was quick and the server very friendly. I hope to ride to that area again sometime. And if I do, I will make this a mandatory stop. read more

This a local diner, and a community gathering place. The menu's quite limited but the food on it is all good. Simple menu with plenty of options if you ask. My favorites are the "San Francisco Burger" which comes with plenty of fries. At breakfast time they have a 2 eggs, toast and choice of bacon, sausage or ham served with hash browns. Recently painted inside, but still has old carpet and booths. Good standard fair at reasonable prices. I had the tuna melt with old fashioned fries, still had the skin on, and were not greasy. The fries are really greasy but definitely go for the Hot Hamburger with mashed potatoes and horseradish. It is an opened faced burger covered in gravy.
