Cute to see a train moving on the tracks on the wall by ceiling. Fun little kids area in the back with kid tables, ride in tractor and cow ride. Strawberry ice cream wasn't the greatest quality tasting but still a nice cold treat on a warm day. Liked there were frozen strawberries in it.

It was a very rainy day in New Bern as Tropical Storm Debby approached the North Carolina Coast. Despite that the Cow Cafe was doing a good lunch business with a blend of their savory foods and their sweet ice cream treats. The cow decorations and cow puns are aplenty here and sure to get a smile and chuckle. A cashier noticed there was a line and quickly came over to the second register to take my order. I got a Cowlossal Cow Coney with chili, slaw, and mustard. The cashier also encouraged me to get their pasta salad so I gave that a try too. It took a little longer than I expected for the food to arrive but when it came out the food looked good. The hot dog was big with a split top bun and loaded with tasty looking toppings. The pasta salad was ok. Nothing out of the ordinary or wildly delicious but perfectly fine pasta salad. Hot dog was good too and was a pretty reasonable price. I love the deep golden toast that the bun had. I wish I had had room for dessert but I guess I'll just have to come back! Extra tip: You don't have to go far to find free on-street parking if you're not looking to pay. I parked around the block in front of a dry cleaners and it was about a 3 minute walk to Cow Cafe.

Coming to New Bern for a short trip and visiting Cow Cafe brought out some child hood memories. Just the overall vibe of Cow Cafe is special. The inside of the store is entirely cow-themed and there are a bunch of small trinkets and figures of cows all over the place. It kind of looks like a toy shop inside, and there is even a small model train that is constantly moving around the entire shop. There is even a small area in the back that I think is used to show kids the ice cream-making process. There was a good selection of ice cream flavors so everyone should be able to find something that they will like. Although we only got a simple 1 scoop cup, they have sundaes and a bunch of other items. I think this is a super cool spot to go visit if you have kids with you and are visiting the New Bern area.

We stopped in for ice cream while out and about. How can you resist New Bern's only 4 hoof rated ice cream parlor?! Amazing hand made treat! You can even watch them making it! Lots of flavors to choose from and the scoops are HUGE! Soft, creamy and flavorful. The kid had 2 vanilla scoops in a waffle cone. He said the ice cream was great and it was the best waffle cone he has ever had. That's saying something, as we come from the city where waffle cones were invented (not exaggerating - search Doumar's in Norfolk, VA)! I had 2 scoops in a bowl - 1 milk chocolate and 1 cookie dough. I am normally more of a dark chocolate fan, but this was so creamy and full of chocolate flavor, that it won me over. And the huge chunks of cookie dough were on point! Hubby had a chocolate shake which he loved. Definitely the old fashioned kind made with ice cream - not many places do that anymore. Fast, friendly service make this a must stop when strolling around downtown! We will definitely be back when in the area again.

I was hoping to have the same experience as many of the reviewers did but Cow Cafe was a disappointing experience. I ordered the banana split that was listed as $5.99 and a chocolate milk that was listed as .99 so when my order came to $12.90 I knew there was some sort of problem. I thought I was upcharged for each of the toppings. It turns out that the clerk charged me for a chocolate milkshake instead of the milk. I'm not sure if she was new or just bad at her job. She did make the banana split wrong and had to be reminded to add the banana. The banana goes on the bottom layer then the ice cream then the toppings. This was made with the toppings on the bottom; the ice cream and the banana on top. I don't think she was trained very well or maybe they just do things backwards there. I was given a refund for the clerk's mistake but this was done while I was trying to eat instead of waiting until I was finished. Then instead of issuing a refund it was done will a full refund on the $12.90 and then another charge for the accurate amount. The ice cream melted quickly so I had soup. Not anywhere I'd return again. I do understand that mistakes happen, the situation should have been handled much better.

Stopped in for a quick bite. We received a recommendation from our hotel and this place was pretty good. They have an amazing selection of ice cream. We opted for lunch! I ordered the quesadilla ( it has a cow-like fun name). It was good, and it had peppers, onions, cheese and chicken. The hubs ordered chicken salad. It was made in Texas toast. We enjoyed the food and it wasn't a long wait. We went about 230...they quickly filled up. We would certainly eat there again. 4stars, because the employee wasn't very friendly and the eating area could've been cleaner. Stuff on the floor etc. None of these things would prevent us from return though.

Pretty good. Love the vibe. Got the cotton candy flavor ice cream cone and my friend got the key lime pie milkshake. Customer service could be worked on, the cashier lady made me feel so stupid at the counter talking about ice cream.

Wow!! What fun!!! Like a part in your mouth. Hubby ordered the Caribbean plate and said "There are so many flavors of deliciousness going on". I ordered the Chicken Lemoon sammie which is like a cheesesteak but with chicken and a hint of lemon on a panini. So yummy. Aaron at the counter was polite and friendly and the owner Ms. Mildred came out a couple times to check on us. Of course we saved room for homemade strawberry (WOWZA) and Peanut Uddercup in waffle cones. Can I just say 1 scoop is humongous. So delicious!!!! They also sell gourmet popcorn, there's a kids area in the back, an overhead electric train circling the place, and on some days you can watch the ice cream being made. Place was clean friendly and YUMOO. We will be back for sure. Thank you Ms. Mildred. You are a blessing to New Bern.

We stopped in to eat lunch and try their ice cream. Everyone was so friendly and the interior was inviting. We tried their chicken taco soup and their southwest chicken salad. They both were delicious! We then tried a hot fudge sundae with a scoop of vanilla and butter pecan. We really enjoyed the ice cream and I think it's in our top three favorites! I am looking forward to going back! read more

Decent ice cream. One of my pet peeves is having to get on line before you can even see what their flavors are. So we were in line, then had to get out of line to go check out the flavors, then got back in line. Store is small, cute, with lots of memorabilia to look at. read more

I love the big scoops, you say one scoop but you get four regular ones. I also like the decoration, lots of cute cow pictures, figurines, the train, and how you can see the back where they make ice cream. the back is convenient if you have kids because there is a playground, murals and more. A five star ice cream shop for sure. read more

I absolutely love this place. They have some of the best tasting homemade ice cream I've ever had. I haven't tried any of their savory dishes yet, but some of them sound pretty tasty. Service is great as the employees are super friendly and prompt. The ambience is very unique, with a lot of cool things to look at, including a train running on a track above your head. I have come here many times and plan on coming back many more times in the future! read more

HOMEMADE ice cream. My review could just stop there... I saw the lunch sign outside but was a little confused when I walked in because it looked like just an ice cream parlor. Then I looked up at what I expected to read ice cream flavors but it was sandwiches and salads menu. My husband and I had lunch here today we liked our sandwiches. He ordered chicken cutlet and I ordered Turkey with lettuce, tomato, avocado on a spinach wrap. Yummy . As was the ice cream and popcorn. We will definitely return on our next trip. I suggested to the server that they create an oat milk ice cream. I hope they do. read more

There was a cool old guy who told me to order a apple pie a la "moo" and it was delicious. it was hot apple pie topped with apple pie flavored ice cream and with whipped cream and covered with caramel, in a cup. it had a bunch of stuffed animals everywhere, and there was a train set that circle around the whole restaurant that was really cool. 10/10 read more

It is a very eclectic style to the cafe. They have a porcelain cow collection in a glass display case as you first walk into the ice cream parlor/cafe They make their own ice cream on site. You can watch them make it in the back windows. Our kids quite enjoyed that. We didn't eat here, we just had their ice cream. Their waffle cones were the best I ever had. The ice cream in general was just ok. I prefer more of a custard and big chunks of candy, fruit, cookie dough, etc. Their ice cream is more basic. It's definitely a fun place to see. read more

I went two weeks ago and had the best hotdog I ever had. Soft bun yummy. So I bring my husband to experience it too... In 60 years, I've never had a panini smashed hotdog. It wasn't good and it was confusing. Won't come back. read more

Incredibly cute cafe with fabulous staff who managed a 13-member Girl Scout troop at dinner time with incredible speed, efficiency, and accuracy. Everyone's dinner was tasty - and that's a challenge with the age group we brought in. The staff was friendly and patient and we appreciated how kind they were to all of our girls. Highly recommend when visiting New Bern! read more

Excellent freshly made ice cream. I tried the double scoop of the ooey-gooey-mcfooey-something-something and it was perfection in a cup. I can't even completely tell you what was in it, but the two scoops is more than one person really needs, and I ate every last bite of it. The café also does other food, and even though we were there around dinner time, we decided that ice cream was the better choice. They also sell a wide range of other stuff there too, including some fancy flavored popcorn. I can't wait to come back and try out some other flavors. read more

YUMMO! We stayed a cup of chili and enjoyed a Cuban sandwich. The food was more than worthy but the owners and staff were delightful. They make homemade ice cream so we will return later to enjoy that. A working model train along the ceiling keeps adults and children alike busy. read more

Great place to bring the whole family for home made ice cream. Many flavors to choose from. Good food offerings for lunch and dinner, satisfying but not gourmet stuff. Order from the counter and they will bring it to you at your table. Great location downtown. read more

Ice cream is AMAZING!!! Service is usually amazing (had one poor experience out of several). Its a fun place for kids to play in the back area. Lovely pa and pa place! However, outside of ice cream their food isn't worth the prices. Not saying the food is bad, just not worth the prices asked. read more

My husband and I stopped in about 2 pm on a Saturday. They were pretty busy. We walked in and everything smelled so good. He got the Southern Strawberry milkshake (which he loved) and I got Uncle Mooford's Chocolate Mountain. Oh my gosh it was soooo yummy. The brownie was fresh and chewy and warm. The chocolate ice cream scoop was a good amount and was so good (it's hard to find good plain chocolate ice cream anymore) it was just a good date stop and super yum!! read more

Customer service was completely awful and the sad thing is it wasn't all of them. The one lady commented on my friends shirt and yelled out "Nc state is trash" as soon as we walked in. I asked if they did samples and she said no. The whole time me and my friends were eating she was staring at us and talking to her coworkers. My friends and I all felt super uncomfortable and it was definitely not a happy place to get ice cream. read more

Wow! What a quaint and wonderful place. We went for lunch and enjoyed everything we tasted. Of COURSE, we ordered their homemade ice cream for dessert- so many flavor options and absolutely delicious. The owners came out to welcome us, and Mr Jim discovered we were from Tallahassee. It seems his daughter and son in law moved there a year ago. We enjoyed our visit with his sweet wife and him. What a great experience! read more

Wow, this place has incredible ice cream and food options! 17 years in this location and is a staple of downtown New Bern! My wife and I have visited Cow Cafe a few times. Each time, we have a great experience and enjoy every bite of their ice cream! The positive: They have Hearty Sandwiches, Wraps, Hot Plates, Salads, Kids Menu, Soup of the Day, Chili, Various Beverages, and last but not least Homemade Ice Cream & Desserts. My family and I have traveled to explore New Bern and surrounding areas/towns for the weekend. Friday night we tried the Cow Cafe in downtown. During COVID19 the options are not exactly endless. We walked up and ordered outside at a table they had placed in front of the door. The family running the business is not American so you have to be patient understanding their accent. I have read many negative and unfair reviews because of this at this restaurant and it makes my blood boil. Five of us ate here and no one in my group had anything negative to say about our experience. My dad and I had the chili cheese dog and it was delicious. We manufacture super premium ice cream on site. We operate a "gourmoo" popcorn center popping a wide variety of premium popcorn flavors. We are a full fledged café with unique and hearty sandwiches, wraps, plates, soups and salads. We cater to customers small and large in New Bern and deliver up to seventy-five miles away. We are a children's entertainment center with a barnyard play area filled with toys for the younger set and finally, we offer a "Bovine Boutique" with almost five hundred different kinds of cow gifts.

History

Established in 1994.

Jim and Mildred Green began Cow Café at a local dairy processing which they operated, in December, 1994. It had an 800 square foot area, was complete with lots of black spots on white backgrounds, sold hot dogs and the company's ice cream and offered a few cow gifts for sale. When the dairy was sold in 2003, Jim and Mildred opened the new and improved version in downtown New Bern and have operated it continuously since.

Began business in 1994. Initial mission statement was "to bring a smile to children in need of a smile". We learned that "children" come in all sizes and "ages", so the mission statement is now "to bring a smile to people in need of a smile". At current location since 2004 and is now our retirement project! We want to offer great food, great ice cream, a great atmosphere and to bring a smile to all who enter through our doors.

So things didn't start well but I ordered the boba boat mocktail and the mac n cheese with short ribs. My waitress then informed me that they were out of the short rib and would brisket be ok. I hate brisket so I said no and she went and got me the menu to order something else. While I was looking at the menu with my phone flashlight (other tables had actual flashlights, they came prepared) as the tunnel was too dark to see without it, I was given mac n cheese with short rib according to the food runner. I questioned him as I had been told they were out but he went and checked and told me it was the last of the short rib. It was not short rib and someone lied. When the waitress returned, she thought it was burnt ends and checked with the kitchen and they told her brisket. Whatever the mystery meat was, it was not what I ordered. Did they think I wouldn't notice or know the meats are prepared differently. It is dark there so it is hard to know what you are eating. The mystery meat dish was taken back to the kitchen and I asked if they could prepare it with vegetables instead as mac n cheese seemed like the safest option on the menu with the mystery meats. I wish they just had what I originally ordered. The specialty made veggie dish was good but I expected more flavors with the cheese. It was kind of bland. I did try the dessert too. I got the strawberry lemonade cake. The strawberries were the best part as the cake was on the dry side. While eating this, the check was brought to the table. This is my biggest pet peeve to not wait until the guest is finished eating. The most frustrating part was that while they refused to increase the lighting when I arrived and asked as I couldn't read the menu. They immediately turned the lights up when another guest asked as I was finishing my dessert. The chef came to the table from the front dining area. It was my understanding that things were going to be made right. I didn't expect to be charged the full price for the dish without the premium meat. Then there was the service failure of bringing out a dish I hadn't ordered to begin with. The decor here is outstanding, with the copper ceilings and the speakeasy feel. The clock out front caught my attention too. They went all out with the details and elegance. So it is disappointing that the food and service is not up to the same standards.

Our two-top started off with a classic Persimmons Old Fashioned ($18) cocktail and a pear vodka, habanero and cucumber lime drink called the Bon Voyage ($14). We chose to split the Roasted Beet Salad ($13) as our appetizer and it was certainly large enough for two to share. The spring mix was topped with delicious red and golden beets, flecks of goat cheese and pistachios, as well as a thick fig balsamic. The salad could have easily been a meal topped with an optional protein. The entree menu features most of the coastal classics, including Fish Tacos ($16), a couple of massive burgers and some heavier offerings like Seafood Pasta ($32) and a huge Fried Seafood Platter ($30) We opted for the Tequila Salmon ($32), served over rice pilaf with green beans and a spicy margarita sauce. I ordered the Unicorn Fish ($30), mostly out of curiosity and upon Brooke's suggestion. The latter was an amazingly flakey fish with the taste and texture of grouper. Topped with honey pecans and served over a lemon scallop risotto with asparagus and spinach - certainly the most nicely prepared fish I've had in a very long time. My family and I are visiting from out of state and have fell in love with this cute little place! My 5 year old & 3 year old boys LOVE the train that goes around the whole front part of the cafe. They also are in love with the decorations and cute artwork on the walls. The kids hot dogs & applesauce & drink are less than $7 and have my kids talking about them nonstop. The service has also been great! There is a tiny play area for kids in the back in which has little picnic tables for the kids. My kids were served their hotdogs inside the barn. Y'all go down to the Count Café you won't be disappointed. Their food is excellent and they've got all the dessert you need and soon to come the best thing ever the coffee shake. if you haven't tried one you've got to get there and try one. The staff there is so amazing. They have great customer service they go above and beyond to make sure you were satisfied and happy with your experience there every time. read more
