We stumbled upon this and couldn't have been happier. The staff were helpful and friendly, there's sort of a science-y hipster vibe, but not in a way that makes it unwelcoming or cultish. The food was amazing! The best we've had for our entire stay. It was very original and paired unusual flavors, but none of it seemed forced, instead blending incredibly well. We had the sweet pancakes (strawberries, pistachio, mascarpone, basil, and honey?) formule and the quinoa porridge (quinoa, tonka beans... I don't remember anything else, but it was marvelous which I didn't think porridge could be). We were most excited for the pancakes, but both far exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend Coutume! Coutume Cafe is probably the best coffee shop in Paris. They are one of only two (currently) places that has a Strada from La Marzocco. While espresso drinks are ubiquitous in France, they are usually quite poor quality. Not so at Coutume. My cappuccino was the perfect temperature, and the texture was wonderful. The microfoam had no bubbles, and the art demonstrated the barista's skill. As far as the espresso itself, the flavor was a bit faint. The roast was light, which is a must, but I don't think they were quite getting everything out of the shot. I'm nitpicking a bit, and I only mention it so that people coming from the U.S. who are used to high end espressos (Blue Bottle, Abraco, etc.) will know what to expect. The only thing I couldn't get the hang of was ordering "café". I usually got an espresso, etc. I don't know what I was doing wrong, but I was with french speakers the whole time. An iced coffee ended up espresso on ice. It's all good... I dig that I am a cultural immigrant. I was patient. Then I came to Coutume. Stellar service - kind, patient, and professional. They suffered my Americanism with grace and class. They also excel at coffee in a way few places in Paris understand. Multiple types of brewing, shockingly good foaming.... I don't need to ramble on to make the point: This is 5 star coffee in a city with 2 star options for hot caffeine. The post dinner espresso is ubiquitous, but anything else is trouble to find. Coutume produces such quality coffee, I greedily had so much I was vibrating my surroundings for about 6 hours. Expertly brewed, expertly served, and delicious. It's a demur, unpretentious place.... but an exceptional treat nonetheless. Simply the best coffee in Paris. Coming from Seattle, I'm not a Starbucks fan (I'll go there in a pinch) - rather I like more artisan shops (like Cafe Umbria in Seattle) ... if you seek out artisan coffee this is a must stop for you. They use fresh milk from a dairy north of Paris and not either the "fresh" milk you can get in the store (which is nasty) or the even nastier ultra-high pasteurized milk (which is unrefrigerated!). Also, their coffee beans are perfectly roasted to my liking and they pull shots which are creamy and not bitter. They serve little pastries on the weekday mornings and then a brunch (mostly egg dishes) on Saturday and Sunday. Service is very friendly and some of the servers when we were there spoke some English. The service can be a bit spotty, particularly if they get busy. The atmosphere is cool. AMAZING coffee. Finding quality non-espresso style coffee in Paris can be really hard for an ex-pat struggling to satisfy her insatiable caffeine craving. The cafe is set up so that single cafe-goers or pairs can sit and the front of the cafe while there is a large table in the back reserved for those who are cracking down on a large work load. I visited this cafe probably ten times during my six months in Paris and was never disappointed. The only reason I am giving them four instead of five stars is because on my last visit when I went to study for my finals, I was told that they no longer allow laptops. Let me start by saying that I rarely give a place 1 star, but in this case, I have the full support of the group of 5 of us that went there for brunch on a Sunday morning in February. Our server was not helpful or attentive. It was as if she did not want to come into work that day. She reluctantly took our order and then her colleague was the one who actually served us. Coffee is supposedly a big deal at this place, so when we ordered cafe creme (typical menu item for a coffee place in Paris), they brought us a "flat white", which looks and probably tastes the same, but why can't the server offer a one-liner such as "We do not have cafe creme, but we serve flat white, which is very comparable." Instead, they took our order for cafe creme, and then we got a waiter who comes with our "flat white." When we say we ordered cafe creme, he shrugs and gives us a look like we just insulted him. This is easy to fix: train your waiters better! Next, the brunch menu was quite an exotic assortment of good tasting items, but honestly at these prices (about 20-30 EUR for a given combo) and at these portions (small plate), one is left feeling very hungry and a bit poorer. We also ordered some lower priced "sides", including pancakes. My expectation was that this would somewhat resemble the American variety of pancakes, complete with syrup or something. Instead, the two ultra dry pancakes were served with blob of hard / cold dulce de leche. I am fine with deviating from the norms, but these pancakes were really bland and dry. I think this place has had it good for too long and their quality and service are starting to slide. A restaurant in this city must constantly pay attention to the big things and little things. I am a latte drinker but have been able to enjoy a "cafe"/espresso during my vacation in France. Their iced latte was amazing!! I ended up getting 2 bags of the beans that they mixed/blend and change up often to take home to my sf coffee snob friends (myself included). A great coffee shop in Paris. It's more "American style" than your typical Parisian cafe as they offer lattes, pour overs, larger sized drinks and flavored coffees. It's a great spot to grab a quick coffee (I even saw they offer to-go cups, which is something rarely seen in Paris) but it's also the perfect spot to sit, relax, and enjoy a low key environment that has free wifi. Most everyone here is nice and speaks great English.... but Mati stands out. He is SO friendly, SO personable, and gave us a couple of great restaurant suggestions for our last couple of nights in town after being in Paris for over a week. On the weekdays they offer a great breakfast... Things like granola with yogurt, a ricotta & red berry pancake (that is only slightly sweet), fruit, etc... All welcomed items after eating croissants and almond pastries for breakfast for a week! They also offer a larger brunch on the weekends, but we didn't make it to that. The menu looked great though. I absolutely love Coutume and it has become a must-visit for us every time we are in Paris. It's a welcome change to the sometimes stressful Parisian cafes. read more

Was looking for a coffee shop in Paris and this place kept popping up so I went to go check it out. It was a short walk away from the Eiffel Tower making it an easy spot to hit up as a tourist. Even as I was sitting there I overheard a couple having a conversation in English. Kind of ruined my reading-in-a-cafe-in-Paris romantic vibe I was trying to go for. When I went it was incredibly crowded so I ended up at the white tiled counter area. Not ideal for reading but it worked just fine. As it was partly a restaurant/cafe sort of set up, I was asked to sit first then was giving a menu to order from. Kind of odd to do as I just wanted a coffee and pastry from their case but not a big deal at all. Also in Parisian or possibly european style, when you're finished they don't bring over a check but rather you just go up and pay at the register. The coffee was delicious & the service was good. Wouldn't say it was super memorable but still a great spot to hit up if you're looking for a real cup of coffee in Paris. This place is best for really lovely coffee to go. The milk is real and fresh, not radiated and boxed. Not easy to find eggs on toast and lovely coffee for breakfast in Paris. This place does have lovely coffee. Unfortunately if you're only having coffee you've got to sit at the bar and the barstools have no foot rest, so your legs are left hanging, which is painful after 10 minutes and a convenient way to make sure you don't stay very long. Which is too bad. Don't expect to come here and get any work done. Their eggs on toast are actually eggs on unsweetened pancakes, which are not quite delicious, but are original and not bad, either. If you're homesick for a big breakfast, this is a nice option. read more

Artisan coffee science meets Paris. If you've been to Four Barrel in San Francisco you'll feel right at home in Coutume. This cafe feels a little like a SF portal warped itself into Europe, where you aren't quite sure if you're sitting in a chemical laboratory or a coffee shop. The space is sparsely decorated and yet still quite beautiful. I could spend a lot of time hanging out here! Incredible discovery. Their coffee is amazing, and they even do a monthly cocktail called the Coutume Coffee (€6). This month it was blackberry-flavored, with a homemade espuma (light chantilly) - never tasted something that good, I didn't even have to put sugar in it whereas I'm the biggest sugar-binger ever :) I put one less star for the cakes and pastries, which are quite cheap for such a place but not exceptional. I found my carrot cake (€4) not sugary enough, with a weird lime flavor on the frosting. Bonus point: Open till 7pm on Sunday, yay! read more

They may be great at coffee, but brunch is a trainwreck. I'm still so upset, I'm not sure where to start. The waiter who "welcomed" us was unnecessarily condescending so we were already off to a bad start. After we were seated we found out that one of the three main dishes was out; it was unfortunately the vegetarian dish, leaving my friend with a limited mix-and-match of side dishes as options. Here's what I got-- a WARM beer, which they couldn't exchange for a cold one because there were none (?), a TASTELESS breakfast burrito-- I honestly couldn't even tell there was bacon in it and NO SPICY SALSA which was apparently also out of stock but no one had informed us until I brought it up to another waiter. So I visited Coutume because it made one of those innumerable "great places to get coffee in Paris" lists. They had a particular house special that involved a double Costa Rican espresso, some parmesan cheese, and honey. The idea was to take some quantity of the honey and cheese and then to sip some of the espresso and to feel the tastes change as you changed up the quantity of honey and cheese. A fun experiment, to be sure, but it's also a great place to work and a decent place to get lunch. Tucked away down a side street but don't let that fool you. It's really excellent, and I'd highly recommend it. Coffee: great selection, faultless quality, very helpful staff if you want to discuss what you want, etc. Great, great coffee. I sampled a few different types while I was thee and left with a fantastic "for real" coffee buzz on me that saw me through the day :-) Food: Is brilliant. Very rude staff and horrible service. We asked him about the coffee special and he replied that it was different types of coffee. When we asked him politely what they were he was very short and said "just three different ones, espresso, filtered, and cappuccino. But it will take a very long time to make so you will have to wait. We said that it was okay and not a problem to wait. He asked if we wanted anything else and we said the coffee was all. Five minutes later he came back and said he could not serve us and they no longer had the special. Everyone else was drinking the same exact coffees and their machine was definitely working. This is definitely the worst experience I've ever had at a coffee shop and we were treated very poorly. Coutume is a great spot to go with friends (or by yourself) to get brunch in Paris. They are known to have great coffee, and their lattes definitely didn't disappoint. My friends and I each got their brunch special (soup+tartine+drink of choice) for 20 euros. Considering that their latte is usually around 5 euros, the special was a great deal. The soup was a refreshing squash soup and the tartine came loaded with roasted vegetables, which made for a healthy and refreshing meal. We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast, one of us having a decadent plate of pancakes (with whipped cream, pears, chocolate ganache and hazelnuts) and the other having a more simple plate of eggs, bacon and toast (which was absolutely amazing). The flavors were just divine, rich and delightful. Our meal was the essence of why the French are famous for their food - good ingredients, cooked just right with the seasoning to enhance its natural goodness. Coffee was excellent too (the barista was excellent) and water was served in cute chemistry beakers. It was very busy yet the noise level allowed for normal conversation. The staff were wonderful - personable and forgiving of tourists like us who speak limited French. We ordered: Cold brew- think "infused coffee;" a 20+ hour cold drip that extracts flavor and aroma without the acidity or bitterness that you might associate with hot coffee/espresso Flat white- slightly more hot milk than a latte, but with less milk mousse Tartine de printemps- a hearty slice of bread topped with avocado, feta, green and white asparagus, fresh pomegranate seeds, raw spring peas, fried egg, and a creamy Hollandaise-Dijon vinaigrette hybrid sauce Carrot cake- better than your grandma's, but sadly no raisins; the cream cheese frosting is agonizingly delicious Cheesecake- everything a cheesecake should be - rich (without unnecessary weight) and complex with a perfect high note tang; one slice is enough to share, but you won't want to **Notes: NO RESERVATIONS. I made the trek across the world to Coutume and happened to be there on the weekend. Apparently that was a mistake. We got seated and given a confusing menu to look at. First I tried to order V60 pour over coffee, but the waiter said they weren't serving it and left. 10 minutes later when I finally had my next chance to attempt to order, I tried for the syphon coffee. He said they don't serve that either. We asked why. He said it was because it was the weekend. Espresso drinks only. My primary focus as an international coffee tourist is pour-over, one cup at a time coffee. That's why I went to this cafe. I could see the equipment sitting up on the counter not being used. I reluctantly drank a cappuccino. It tasted pretty good. I didn't buy any beans. I bet they are good. Also, I bet their pour-over coffee is good, but alas I may never get a chance to try it. Absolutely love this coffee spot. Hip vibe, a great place to come do work (free wifi) or just hang out for a few hours. Their coffee is so delicious and made with utmost attention. One of the few places you can find iced coffee in Paris and even though its expensive (4 € for a pretty small cup) it is likely the best iced coffee you will ever have! Their food is also great. Tasty banana bread, AMAZING granola with yogurt amd roasted fruit, and delicious brunch. This was the only restaurant that I have visited more than once in Paris, why? Because it's delicious and soooo fresh. My first experience was absolutely amazing. We had a lovely blonde waitress who kept tending to our table and carefully explained the menu. I started with the salmon choice & my friend had the beef brunch option. We also shared the fig French toast (SN: you can't leave without trying this). All two meals were delicious and the salmon was so fresh, it literally melted in your tongue. The beef was also fresh and the home fries were to die for. The highlight of my meal however was the fig French toast, it was carefully dipped in a cinnamon sauce and the French whipped cream on top was so delicious that I'm still dreaming about it today. We went back just for this plate and have zero regrets. The orange juice is also very fresh and yummy and let's not leave their coffee behind. Coutume cafe is a great place to go for breakfast, coffee or lunch. Not only is the coffee excellent, but so is the service. When I was there, one of the owners served me himself, and explained the rare coffee they were offering. He was kind enough to speak English, and speak English well. And the coffee was amazing - and I live in Seattle where every cafe has amazing coffee. I also had lunch there one day. The chicken curry sandwich was delicious, enough curry to know it was curried, but not spicy. And the mushroom soup was rich with mushrooms. I highly recommend Coutume! read more

Great coffee. I tried the special where the barista whips up a unique creation and I was impressed. My wife went with something more traditional and was happy with her choice as well. The food was okay. Originally, they forgot to include my avocado which they charge extra for, but then one suddenly appeared, only half dark and mushy.
