For years this was my favorite go-to for fresh, well prepared comfort food. Since transfer of ownership, however, Cousin's has sadly become a meager shell of it's former self. It seems like the new owner is trying hard to keep things close to how they were, but corners are definitely being cut, resulting in a sad depreciation of quality. The lunch specials have been reduced to easy boil/defrost/mix offerings. Gone are the tasty soups that always kept me going through the winter. Don't misunderstand, Cousin's still has soup but some of the varieties are downright ghastly. I asked my husband to bring me some chicken noodle soup today, and was horrified to find everything swimming in a heavy tomato-based stock. That ain't chicken noodle soup, my Cousins. The next time you're grocery shopping, check out a can of Campbells chicken noodle soup for reference. The last beef barley I ordered was so awful that I fed it to my dogs - as I will be doing with this "chicken noodle" catastrophe. Pro-tip: change the name of that concoction to Mediterranean Chicken Soup, so that people like me, who just want the comfort of actual chicken noodle soup can spare ourselves the disappointment. The pastries, once the crown jewel of Cousin's are now...I'm trying to think of a polite word...awful. Often stale by the time they complete the 4 minute ride to my house, they're more likely to end up in the bin, which is probably for the best. I'm sure everyone at Cousin's is trying the best they can, but their efforts simply aren't good enough. Call Tony in to take a look and tell you what you're doing wrong. I'm giving 2 stars because your pizza remains the best. But we can't live on pizza. I'd rather travel to McKinney & Doyle for the things Cousin's used to offer in abundance and with many smiles. From the outside cousins cafe looks like you just want to drive by it. But after coming here a few times now it's a must stop. Their breakfasts are amazing and have huge portions and are perfect before a long hike or days adventures. What an unexpected delight! It's a feast for the senses upon entering with wonderful display cases filled to the brim with so many appetizing items. The current photos do not do it justice and I was talking on phone so didn't take any. I stopped for a pizza craving and was delighted with my cheese slices. I was totally tempted by the garlic knots that had just come out of the oven along with calzones or something similar. Did not try those sweets but they looked amazing. The last review I posted of Cousins was harsh. Very harsh. And while I do stand by everything I said, I also stand by this: Our community needs Cousins. Despite my frustration and disappointment, I remain an extremely loyal customer. I very much want owner, Mike, and his team to succeed. Except for love, there probably isn't a more intense relationship we have in our lives than the one we have with food. In that regard you may consider my last review a crime of passion. Again: we need Cousins. I know that Mike took the helm at a very difficult time. We were all struggling out of the pandemic, prices had begun to soar, and everything just felt weird. The change in ownership was especially jarring because most of us were still raw from our Covid experiences and battling new concerns, like to mask or not to mask, filling our gas tanks, buying groceries that had become suddenly unaffordable, etc. We needed places like Cousins to be as they were before lockdown. But that is an unrealistic need. Mike has done his level best to keep the business going, despite not being able to find enough help, and having to pay the same prices for food as the rest of us. Sherry, who works at Cousins most days, is a complete delight. She instantly remembers your likes and dislikes, has a great sense of humor, and to my shame has known my name longer than I've known hers. Louis is the best maker of pizza anywhere. Period. We need Cousins, but more importantly, Cousins needs us. To succeed, Mike and crew need to see our faces as often as Tony and Vicky did. So, despite the fact that a simple sandwich order is occasionally a fail, I'll always keep going back. Cousins needs to increase income to be able to address some of the issues raised in my review and in those of others. That being said, it's not our responsibility to keep Cousins going...or is it? This is our community. In Wingdale and Dover we fight for the things we love. We loved Cousins and it's still there, so we should really start loving it some more. Mike: how about offering Stone Church hikers' picnics, all packed and ready to go? Or Bull's Bridge hiker's picnics? Blast it out on social media with hashtags. People hike several locations incredibly close to us and I'm sure they would prefer to stop in Cousins and pick up a packed picnic for 2-4 rather than lug their own chow. Something that can fit in a backpack. People of Wingdale/Dover! How about Monday Morning Breakfast at Cousins? Just show up and we can meet one another and shoot the breeze? We stopped by here because we needed lunch and a restroom on our way to strawberry picking in CT. What I thought looked merely like an average bakery actually turned out to be pretty decent. They have a nice deli counter serving sandwiches, a wood fired oven, and a bakery section with a ton of variety - ranging from eclairs to cream puffs to napoleons. I ordered their Italian stallion which was a classic Italian sub and my friend "made his own" roast beef with lettuce and tomato. We got both on a hero (which they call "wedges"). The sandwiches were gigantic and filled to the brim with meat. We also got an iced coffee, and two chocolate chip cookies and two other type of cookies. Total came out to a little over $20. I ordered a cheesecake for Easter. I went on the Saturday before, the box was dirty and I asked for a new box. The girl at the counter stated it could have been worse. I noticed that the cheesecake had a huge crack across the entire cake. I spoke to the owner and he said it was unacceptable and offered to bake a new one and to pick it up the next day. On Easter, I went to pick it up and it was baked with a huge hole in the middle sort of like a bunt pan. I was completely unsatisfied and I ended up getting a different cake. Great service and nice 90s music. They have pizza and for a early breakfast on your way to ski, you will get a decent egg on bagel. I would want their fresh pie on display but might be a bit too early. Beside pie, there are bunch of baked goods. The price is reasonable relatively $3 for a breakfast sandwich. Stopped on my way back from Connecticut. What a surprise. When I walked in the door it resembled your average convenience store...with a beautiful brick oven in the corner. Looks very out of place. Nevertheless, it was a welcome site, having seen nothing decent, quick and easy to eat within 30 miles north of here. Ordered a large brick oven pie, half plain and half meatball and pepperoni. The pie was piping hot as it was brought to the table by the friendly creator of said pie. The crust had a bit of char (which I like). The meat and pepperoni were pretty solid, and the sauce was flavorful, with a little bit of tang. Where this pie falls a little short is in the queso department. I found the motz had a bit of an odd taste to it. It wasn't bad or inedible, it was just not my thing. All in all, I swallowed three slices in the space of 4 minutes. So it couldn't have been that bad. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The deli counter looked like it was cranking out some nice sandwiches (thought I saw a Philly cheesesteak pass by that looked pretty damn good). Lest I forget, decent bathroom. And the wing chairs were a nice touch. If I come through these parts again, I would definitely return. Very solid all around. read more

We ordered pizza from here last weekend and I foolishly expected it to be similiar to NYC zza. If you're not expecting great thin crust pizza, then you won't be too disappointed. The specialty pizzas were good, we ordered the basic margarita and some kind of meat-lovers pizza. Both were priced about $18. My complaint would be the amount, or lack there of, of toppings. The toppings were minimal and lacking equality spread about the pizza, which for consistency, weight and leverage of the pizza (see it can get very scientific) is needed. The pizza was certaintly not thin crust, nor burnt but if you're not expecting nyc pizza its good. The dough was good and chewy and the cheeses were good. Overall the pizzas were good, nothing to brag about, but if I am in the area again I'd go back for the specialties. read more

Stopped here because of a recommendation that I got from a friend. Went in at 11:30 a.m. for breakfast sandwich saw delicious foods and I was ready to buy , but when I ask the lady if she could make me a breakfast sandwich she replied "no, we stopped making breakfast at 11. We can make a BLT?" However, I wanted a breakfast sandwich, so I left and went down the road to a place that would give me a breakfast sandwich . This place looks like they make them to order, what happens after 1130? Do the eggs fade away? Does the grill turn off? I don't know, but they did turn away money. I would have bought their other food items such as coffee, pastry, ETC. Consumer suggestion... Maybe we consider having a breakfast anytime policy to make more money that way. read more

I came in for a couple of slices, and decided to grab a strawberry (?)/cherry cheese croissant. Because the sign said wood fired, I expected the pizza to be woodsy tasting, smoky, crispy edges. Nope. I guess it's what works for the area. But there was nothing crisp in the dough at all, it was soft, except certain parts of the crust. The croissant (danish) wasn't remarkable at all as in flavorless, but since I'm new to the area, I'll be working my way through the rest of the pizza places available. There is no way to go wrong at Cousin's Cafe. Tony and the staff are amazing and friendly. The food is the best around. Pastries hold their own against nearby McKinney & Doyle. Sandwiches, Paninis and other deli specials are delicious, generous portions at a fair price. Wood fire pizza is THE best with no local rival, despite various options. Seating indoors, out doors, or take out. Accepts cards and has loyalty point card. Only thing they can improve on is attending to the outdoor trash cans which often are overflowing onto the ground in warmer weather when outdoor seating is in use. read more
