    Pool and river view!
    Jessica H.

We had a really great experience here! The front desk staff was super nice. Our room had a balcony and was overlooking the pool and the river. The pool was really nice when we used it, thankfully in shade for a good bit of the afternoon. The river was peaceful and we really enjoyed watching people win surf and boats go by. We parked our car and literally did not get in again for the rest of our trip. This hotel was within walking distance of all the restaurants we ate at, all the stores we shopped at, the ghost tour we took, Tryon Palace, the Riverwalk, literally everything else we could have ever wanted to do. The air conditioning was comfortable, the front lobby usually had water for us to fill up our water bottles, and they gave us extra toiletries whenever we ran out. Could definitely use a few updates, but really we had no complaints at all.

Clean, quiet and I. A beautiful location. I stayed on a Tuesday night on the top floor.

We were in town for the weekend to visit family. The hotel was in a great location, on the water and within walking distance of downtown. The price is very reasonable. Our room was very clean, the bed was comfortable, we had plenty of towels and the heat/AC was in perfect working order. The bistro/bar is quite small but they do have the option to grab a drink and some food. My ONLY complaint was that they only had 1 elevator so we had to wait quite a while to get the elevator during check out time. Otherwise, it was GREAT and we would definitely stay here again.

This hotel has one of the best locations along the waterfront in New Bern and although the location literally brought us there, the level of customer service and cleanliness will bring us back. New Bern does not have a lot going in general and anything that is happening is quite close to the hotel, so when it comes to travel, location is important. Although I would have like a better view from the room, a last minute booking comes with limited options. The first thing we did was go directly to the pool which at the time felt a bit like swimming in lake superior, so out of the cold water and into the comfortable patio chairs to enjoy the view of the water. The well stocked bar directly off of the lobby is conveniently located and staffed with some excellent folks. Breakfast was a must, and course they offer all of the coffee options anyone would expect, but they also have a impressive menu for a fresh cooked breakfast. Again I have to compliment the friendliness and willingness of the staff to ensure the day started off on a very complimentary and positive note. I really do not understand why this hotel has such an low overall rating, I found it a great stay and will return in the future. Yes the hotel is not brand new and has aged, but it has aged well and is kept extremely clean, I have not found anything cleaner along the coast as of yet. Cheers!

When you visit New Bern it should be stated this this town is quaint and charming. This hotel kind of blends in with the area type. It's right on the water which is great and Downtown New Bern is literally outside of the hotel doors. The rooms are clean and cozy, and help give you a warm feeling if visiting during the fall and winter time. The location of this hotel is what makes it a great option for a short stay

This Marriott property is very much a mixed bag for me. It has an excellent location on the Neuse River, and very close to beautiful, historic downtown New Bern, well within walking distance of a number of nice restaurants, and it is an easy on and off of US Highway 70. But the check in process and the physical aspects of the room we stayed in was much less than a pleasant experience. We had requested an early check in, but were told on our arrival at 2 PM that no rooms were available (they were fully booked the night before, we were told, and I guess they all checked out late), and that we'd have to come back at 3 PM - I guess all the empty rooms would be cleaned and available in that one hour period! We came back at 3 PM, and it was more confusion, more frustration - the same unfocused, confused clerk first tried to assign us a room that was different than what we'd requested - her coworker had to point that out to her. She had to contact the housekeeping staff 3 times to find an available room - the first 2 had already been assigned during the hour we were told no rooms would be available - most irritating! This room was adequate in some ways (comfortable bed & pillows, well lit, etc), but there were also some problems and some deficiencies. The fan on the heat/AC unit is very loud and annoying, and the first night we were there, the heat did not work properly and the room became quite cold. There was no closet, but rather a narrow stand up wardrobe unit with very limited space for our hanging clothes, and in fact, I had to remove the hangers that were already there to get any space at all.. The shampoo and conditioner were the smallest I've ever seen in a motel room, and was barely enough for one person. And finally, the bottom of the tub becomes dangerously slippery once wet. We like New Bern, and we like the location of this motel a great deal, but whether we'll come back to this property remains to be seen - and we almost always stay at a Marriott motel, if available.

Roaches!! Woke up to two large cockroachs in our room. We called the front desk and asked if someone could come to the room and remove them. The woman (Kim) who answer the phone said flippantly that she was the only one there and no one was available to help us until later In the day. Finally we went to the front desk and asked about a new room. (At this point one cockroach had disappeared somewhere around behind dressers.) Kim said she could get us a new room but not until 12 at the earliest. It is highly concerning to think the hotel cares so little about a roach infestation in their rooms. If you choose to stay here, please inspect the room for signs of roaches!

Please improve your fire alarm system to properly wake all guests, practice drills have a plan, communication amongst employees about emergency resposes, update protcol procedures for emergencies. Awakened at ~7ish am on a Saturday morning after a night of partinging I heard the faint fire alarms sounding in the hallway outside my door. I woke up my friend, get dressed, let's go, grabbed my purse at the ready (because I'm a Boy Scout), and made our way down the stairs to the lobby. I was asked by a fellow hotel guest mingling near fresh air why they couldn't just turn off the alarm because burnt toast is no emergency. The alarms were turned off by staff. I walked out the front doors to hear fire trucks approaching. I think my response to the drill was record time. The smell and sight of smoke was gagging. I walked back in the building ahead of fire crews just to check out our service personel (hey I'm old and female). Not funny, but a possibly serious siruation. I took a picture as the response team set up fans to blow outside air into the hotel lobby. My thoughts were open a back enterance and blow the air from the lobby out the front door creating a breeze to evacuate the smoky air. But hey... my dreams are not reality. The firemen finished their job quickly and logged out a book at the managers desk. My friend asked me how I knew what to do so quickly, alert level, and rradiness I had acted. My response... well you can never be complacent. Safety first. Actually, I have had this happen in a variety of hotels. However, Sheraton handled it best. Lights and sound blared in the rooms waking me very starled and grabbing my friend's hand in pitch darkness of the night. We made it down stairs in our jammies and robes, the fire department signalled the all clear and over a loud speaker through the hotel came management stating "All Clear". My dream left me thinking Hampton never gave the all clear, nor did they phone call my room to state the "All Clear". My dream prompted terror and bewilderment and questioned my wanting to ever stay in a Hilton property. The level of safety seemed less than my own home's capabilities. My friend would have kept sleeping through the Hampton alarms. This disturbed me greatly.

There is not adequate parking because they have taken up most of the lot with storage containers and heavy machinery (although the VIP parking spaces are not blocked, just not available for you unless you're whatever status). There is no place to fill up a water bottle because they were installing the new fountain (see the exposed wiring in the picture). The fitness center is covered with construction materials, so there's no way to use that. If you had hoped to use the conference room, that's also filled with construction materials, but don't worry, they didn't put a "Do Not Enter" sign, so come on in I guess. There was no one at the front desk for most of the day, which left one of our group waiting for over 15 minutes to check in. Breakfast starts at 6, but the day we left (a Sunday) there was no coffee. I waiting until 6:20 before giving up on that. There is coffee in the room (enough for one person, not two), and they give you a bottle of water when you check in. Look, I understand that the place wants to stay open while doing renovations. Can't let the stockholders take a loss, amirite? But for the SUBSTANTIAL cost of the room, one would expect the amenities that are advertised to be available, or at least to not have to park at the hotel next door and walk across the grass. Six thumbs down.

I was working about 20 miles NE of New Bern, and was looking for options other than (a) the $100+/night hotel chains in New Bern or(b) a longer drive to Havelock for a room more in the company's acceptable expense range. Fortunately my internet search found the Zieglar, with rates at least $20/night less than the New Bern chains and comparable with Havelock rates. I stayed in the 1940.s themed room. Frank Sinatra photos and album covers are featured on the walls, along with other 1940's stars from radio, movies, and sports. Other rooms have as themes the 1950's, 1960's, Elvis & Marilyn Monroe, and even a Goth inspired room. Here's was impressed me. The room had all of the modern conveniences (hdtv, microwave, small refrigerator) but also included a DVD player with several movies in the room, and about eight books. I opened the drawer of the writing table and found a 1940's edition of LIFE magazine. The bed was comfortable with sheets having a colorful design - not your typical white hotel sheets. The towels and other linens were a higher quality than what you would find at most hotels. The heat/AC unit was a newer remote control design, and along with the ceiling fan kept the room comfortable on hot humid summer days. If I were looking for a comfortable quiet place where I want to indulge in a good book or two for a few days I would definitely suggest the Ziegler. Don't think it would be a good choice for a family on vacation on the business person needing a place for business meetings, But - if you want a quiet place that isn't your run of the mill lodging room and at a reasonable price - give 'em a try!

This is an e-boutique hotel. You will receive a code prior to your stay that opens the building and your guestroom doors. Assistance is only a text away, but I didn't need anything during my stay. The rooms are gorgeous, with designer furnishings and accents in soft blues and grays. It's elegant, yet also very comfortable with a supremely luxurious bed and two nice chairs making a reading nook. The bathroom has large floor space, thought the shower is a bit small. There's no closet per se, but there's a rack with plenty of hangers and shelving above, plus drawers in the bedroom for storage. I paid the small extra amount to book one of the rooms with a balcony. I would recommend going that route, as the balcony rooms are on the side of the building away from Front St. and facing toward the river and the sunset view. The balconies themselves are large, with a side table and two chairs that are comfortable for enjoying the view. Location is prime, and just about anything you're here to do will be within walking distance. Tryon Palace is just a few blocks down, and the main shopping and dining streets are even closer. The riverfront is just across a parking lot. There is on-site parking at The Harvey, with one space for each room. It's easy to access, and directly adjacent to the building. There are no elevators or bell staff to assist with bags, so there are considerable stairs involved unless you're on the ground floor. (There are three floors of guest accommodations.) Everything here is fresh and new and in impeccable shape, and there are many historic photographs the Harvey building and the New Bern area in the hallways and on the landings, but from the inside you would never guess the structure is well over 200 years old. My only frustration was with the TV, which is one of those things where I can never find "normal" channels -- for instance, I could not locate the Monday Night Football game on it. But maybe you're better with technology than I am. Otherwise, this was a terrific option and I wouldn't really consider anywhere else if returning to New Bern.

Still, I wasn't overly concerned, but it might be an issue for a couple that specifically requests a queen-size bed. I even looked at my confirmation email, and it read, QN, which is a queen. FYI, a Queen is larger than a Standard. Oh yeah, no shower gel either. See photo. Luckily, I brought soap with me. Nevertheless, housekeepers shouldn't be overlooking the obvious. Hard to overlook an empty bottle. Next, I was informed that Candlewood Suites doesn't offer breakfast, which is fine since the room had a stovetop. Also, I thought I saw a sign that read, NO PETS. Well, I stayed on the second floor, and some lady across from me had one Weimaraner and a spotted German Shorthaired Pointer. Definitely, not small or medium size dogs, and I guess she snuck them into the hotel, which probably isn't difficult since they only have one person on staff at the front desk. Since I am deaf, I only noticed them because they were jumping on her as soon as she opened the door to her room. I cannot tell you if they barked all night or not. Sorry, I didn't get a photo of the dogs, but most hotels will place anyone with a dog on the first floor. Finally, as I loaded up my vehicle at 3 AM, there was no clerk in view. I made three trips to the room to make sure I wasn't leaving anything behind. On a side note, Harris Teeter grocery is right around the corner from this hotel, which was a nice plus, and there is a Panda Express directly in front of the hotel in the parking lot.

We booked for 2 nights for our family reunion and have stayed here multiple times in the past with no problems whatsoever. Well, they must be under new management because they have gone way downhill. The first room we were assigned had a broken AC unit. Maintenance was supposed to come fix it but never did. The room smelled horrible like mildew and multiple stains on the carpet (I'd be willing to bet this hotel has been flooded but not repaired). We were eventually moved to another room only to discover that the door didn't fully lock. We had to use the latch to even feel somewhat secure. Other family members stayed in other rooms in the hotel and they had similar issues with rooms in poor condition. These rooms need some SERIOUS repairs and some TLC. It's UNETHICAL to keep collecting money for rooms that you KNOW are not up to par! Also, someone kept propping open the back door with a rock. I moved it several times and it seems like this is a common practice because no one else seemed concerned, yet it is extremely UNSAFE for obvious reasons. We also noticed that some of the staff brought their young children to work with them. I know times are hard but this is unsafe and likely an OSHA violation. So many disappointments. It felt like we were staying at a Motel 6 or Super 8. This is not the Comfort Suites that we had grown to love over the years and certainly not what I paid for or expected. It is obvious that there has been a change in management and/or ownership since the last time we stayed there and no one seems to care that they are ruining the Comfort Suites brand.
