At the beginning of our relationship, he told me that he would only take my case if it made sense for him to do so. Later, however, when the matter became more difficult, his position changed and he told me, "you have no bargaining chips." If that was truly his professional assessment, then the obvious question is: why take my case in the first place? It felt less like honest legal counsel and more like a financial opportunity for him to collect a fee without any genuine intention of fully advocating for me. I retained him through my employment assistance program and paid his full rate with the expectation of competent legal representation. Instead, his actual work on my case was minimal--he sent maybe three emails and failed to take meaningful action. On the day of court, he attempted to avoid appearing altogether and had not even filed the necessary paperwork required for my case. Beyond the lack of diligence, his attitude and conduct were dismissive, rude, and unprofessional. I felt written off rather than represented. My case was challenging, but instead of providing competent counsel, he treated me as though I was not worth the effort or attention. I strongly believe I was not taken seriously, and I cannot ignore the possibility that my being a young Black woman contributed to the way I was treated. My primary issue is not only his lack of competence, but his clear lack of genuine care, professionalism, and ethical responsibility to his client. I trusted him during a very difficult time, and he failed to provide the representation I paid for and deserved. For these reasons, I will be filing a formal complaint with the State Bar regarding his conduct.
