For a small-town establishment with only 2 maybe 3 traditional "sit down" restaurants, Country Kitchen seemed average: old yet clean with friendly service and acceptable food. Two of us ordered Reuben sandwiches. They came with sweet pickles and a small ramekin of thousand island dressing, if requested. Nothing to "write mom" about but still tasty with dark rye, melted cheese and a few slices of corned beef with sauerkraut. Another ordered frog legs (quite cosmopolitan for a country eatery), and the diner said they were chewy, though the deep-fried batter and side of butter heightened the taste a bit. The legs came with a hot baked potato and a cold side salad with iceberg lettuce, two bites of radishes, a slice of tomato and salad dressing of choice. The sandwiches, less than $10, and the frog legs, about $16. Not bad for this wee rural city of about 3,600. read more

For a small town the food was good we had pancakes, spaghetti, pecan pancakes, mac and cheese, burger and turkey club. The lemon soup was not to my liking strange flavor. The turkey club was good like cut turkey not lunch meat the bacon was great. My son loved the pancakes. The kids didn't like the mac and cheese it was homemade and think and flour tasting. Burger was good . The bread for the soup was amazing like crazy good. The spaghetti sauce had nice flavor. Will go again. Was to full to have pie. I want to try that. I've gone here all my life, and the food has always been pretty good. My favorite thing though is their peanut butter pie, which I haven't had in yearrrsssss. My friend and I stopped by the other night and the remodeling looks nice, but alas, no peanut butter pie. :( 4 stars though because the waitress was super nice and checked everywhere for it, we felt bad too for leaving but we really really wanted the peanut butter pie, lol. Well, we wanted to eat here because of the sign homemade pies. Place looks good on the outside. Food was good, but portioning was ridiculous. A 2oz cup of cottage cheese was $1.50!! My bacon was delicious, but that was it. Their dish wear looks gross, old, and outdated. I found three pieces of hair in my food (which made me loose my appetite). I asked for cheese on my potatoes and when my plate came out it was on my cheese I told the waitress and she took it back to only have the cook flip the cheese over onto my potatoes ( I could havw done that I expected new eggs ). I should have know it was going to be a bad experience because when we sat down it took forever to be Acknowledged and a table that came in after us was waited on first. I haven't ate here since 2017 because even back then it was a terrible waste of money. Looks like they are still living up to that standard. Ate here today and got the Gyro plate. The pita was so dried out it cracked apart when I tried to fold it. The meat was utterly tasteless and cold. Fries were burnt and greasy and the vegetable soup had some seasoning in it I couldn't identify, maybe Cardamom. Don't eat here. Go to Pav's or Tres Amigos or maybe even Subway for that matter. This place should just do Hebron a favor and close. read more

We passed this restaurant several times and decided to stop for lunch the other day. We walked in to see an outdated decor and worn out water glasses. Didn't expect much in the way of quality but ordered anyways. We both ordered the Breaded Pork Tenderloin sandwich. It was very inexpensive, but we were pleasantly surprised how tasty it was. Fresh bun, hand breaded, and just the right portion. The coleslaw was also very good, fries were perfect. Notably, the fresh bread in the bread basket was outstanding. Waitress was personable and the owner asked us how the meal was. We complimented him on how good it was and he actually explained how he made it. We will go back. read more

Hello. My boyfriend and I went here cause we didn't want his moms lasagna for dinner. The food was absolutely awful. I had a French dip and he had a philly steak sandwich. He didn't even touch his. I almost threw up when I ate my BROWN salad. The vegetable soup was absolutely campbells. It was so awful. The worst part is I felt horrible for the waitress with the blue hair. (The tookpick she chews is a little off-putting) Other tables were complaining of their food while we were there. Our bill was $21 and some change, and we left her $40. She can't help that she's trying to make a few bucks. It was horrible all around. McDonald's would have been a better option, or the damn lasagna. read more

I want to start off by saying that I have been coming here since I was dating the girl who is still my wife. That means I have visited here since 1984-85, and honestly, nothing about this place has changed. Decore, booths, menu ... it is all pretty much the same as it has been. That can be good and bad. There are not a lot of dining options in this town and for a sit down dinner, this is it. The service is good and the place respectably clean although one should use the front entrance if you don't want to walk past the dumpster, grease bin, old and broken patio furniture and dumped mop water. A town parking lot is on the rear. Save yourself the heaves and walk around to the front if you wind up parking in back. Eat the pie. You won't go wrong. If it was not for this one menu item I think they may have not survived. Service is fast. In fact it is a bit too fast. Allow me to explain. I ordered center cut, bone in pork chops with vegetable, soup and instead of a potato, a salad for $15.99. I also had an unsweetened tea. I dropped $21 with tip. The salad was anemic with a thin slice of willted tomato. I asked for vinegarett and they brought me a bottle from Meijer food store. They sat a basket of thinly sliced 'french' bread that must have been left over from last night. It was more like a crouton. The lemon rice soup had no taste of lemon. With the entree came a small bowl of buttered canned sweet corn. The chops were arranged on a well used sizzle platter. I can tell you without asking how the chops were cooked: -- 2 - 3/8" chops on a flat top grill with a grill weight placed on top. -- No seasoning to speak of. -- Turned when crusted on one side and cooked to within of becoming leather. I say it was fast because I hadn't even finished my salad or started the soup and the entree was on the table. If a little more care was exercised the meat woould have saved the review, but it was literally the shriveled and dried cherry on top of a poor excuse of a meal. It was the front of house staff that got this review. Had it not been for their efforts, it would have been 1 star . Meat better, make it 3 stars. And I would have added stars from there. Again, good place for pie and coffee. Grilled meat, you may be taking your chances. read more

Worst service, and worst food I've ever eaten. Went there with four people and not even one of us enjoyed the food! Not to mention the server was very rude I asked for a side of ketchup and got a "fine" and then through it on the table. They don't even deserve one star. read more

Greeted and Seated promptly, stopped in by chance for late afternoon pie and coffee after a day of antique shopping in area. Spouse had great looking coconut cream pie. My cherry pie was good but seemed to be a "manufactured" pie possibly Sara Lee? Slightly disappointed was hoping for small town homemade . $10 for pie and coffee. I took the scenic route from Valparaiso to Rensselaer. I passed a few interesting towns on the way. And a whole lot more of dirty snow and stray cows. When I came into town and I saw the Country Kitchen with hand made signs in the window I made a U-turn. As I walked up to the door I realized that aside from the snow, nothing else was stopping here. When I walked inside and found the waitress reading a book with her feet up. It confirmed my suspicions. It was high noon and I was alone! I was told to sit anywhere as there was ample room. She brought out a menu that was so warn it was holding on for dear life. I asked for a 7up figuring they haven't heard of Sprite or Sierra Mist yet. As I looked around I realized they recently spruced the place up. In 1976! I flipped through the menu and it seemed pretty standard issue. Then I saw the two breast fried chicken. I had visions of grandeur. Ripping the meat off the bone and all that crispy skin flying all over the place. Um, No! It was two boneless breasts. But, they were juicy and the crust was like a pork loin, not chicken skin. It was very good. It came with soup, mashed, gravy and corn. Not the best meal I have ever had, but it was made the way a things used to be. With real grease and lard! I polished the plate and was stuffed. The prices are way behind the times. So I gave the little lady a tip that almost equaled the price of the meal. The experience of having the joint to myself and Grandma serving me was worth the price of admission. read more

The service was poor, the prices were high, the portion sizes were cut in half, and so was the quality of the food. We tried eating Sunday Breakfast for four there, and received cold food after a half hour wait (after finally receiving our menus!) in a restaurant nowhere near max capacity. If that wasn't enough, I received my soup in a dirty bowl with a dirty utensil. When we finally got our main course, it too was cold, and the quality and portion sizes didn't match the price. We ended up having to take our food home to heat it up ourselves. When our waitress gave us our boxes, she rudely threw them down at our table and gave an attitude, not even mentioning the fact that we never got a refill on water, and we had to ask for a refill on coffee.
