This diner is fancy! I was driving through the area and needed a quick stop for weekday lunch. Ordered ahead on the Toast app: Turkey Avocado Panini (no bacon) with a side of fruit. Food ready quickly and waiting for me right at the front door. Tasted great, fresh, hot, filling but not heavy. Just right for lunch. I ended up taking the food to the nearby picnic tables at Central Park Plaza but wished I had just stayed to eat. The interior looked really nice, modern, welcoming. Crowd seemed to be local office workers on their breaks. Good buzz in the room. If I find myself in the area again, I'll almost certainly be back for the full dining experience. read more

Birdie's is a beautiful restaurant with beautiful food. It's just that I've been there several times and it doesn't taste that great. Nothing tastes homemade. Everything tastes like frozen food that had been thawed out. I ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich. The French toast was rubbery, like it had been microwaved and the ham tasted like cheap lunchmeat. The cheese was not warm or melted, which means they didn't put it on the grill to warm it. My friend ordered a Rueban and the cheese was barely melted and the bread hardly grilled. We also ordered their monkey bread which again tasted microwaved and like cheap canned cinnamon rolls, turned into monkey bread. It was hard and dry on the outside and not really done in the middle. Sadly, I think they just use cheap ingredients and maybe the kitchen is inexperienced. Our waitress was kind and helpful. She asked how they could've done better and I told her. For the prices, I expect higher quality. I love the ambience and the coffee was good, but I probably won't be going back because the most important part just isn't there, great food. read more

Wow. What a gem. The service was incredible. I was greeted by several staff members when I walked in. Both the host and waitress were friendly and attentive. (The guest I was meeting for breakfast ran 30 minutes late, but they continued to check on me and chat each time they walked by while I was waiting.) The waitress recommended the avocado toast and it was beyond what I expected, with goat cheese, micro greens, and a balsamic glaze. It even came with two eggs to order (the perfect "medium," which is rare to find) and a side of hashbrowns. (I typically skipped the hashbrowns, but I couldn't stop eating these.) The coffee was on point. (I drink my coffee, black, so it has to be good.) And if the service and food weren't enough, the restaurant itself is gorgeous - so much attention to detail, clean, and plenty of dining space. Came here with my parents for breakfast. The place has a very cool retro feel and the waitress was very nice. Plus, the food comes out quick, has big portions, and is reasonably priced. I got the mini French toast, which came with two slices of bacon. Strawberries and whipped cream were on top of the toast. I had orange juice to drink. Overall, we had a great experience. French toast and other baked good are great. The eggs though always seem overdone. I've had them many different ways including an omelet and they are always dry. The vibe of the restaurant is great. Very modern looking but warm and cozy at the same time. Service is hit or miss. The bus staff seem to be young teenagers who don't understand how to hustle and carry more than one or two things at a time. For a busy breakfast run on a Sunday this isn't good. The wait staff is good but if it's busy- expect a long wait. They seem to be setup to fail. I never see a manger or any host on the floor helping out if it's busy. And good luck relying on help from those slow busers. At other breakfast places you often see someone just refilling water or coffee. Getting someone something they forgot to ask for or extra napkins- not here. Additionally the bar area doesn't seem to be setup for efficiency. The iced tea isn't behind the bar nor is the soda machine. They seem to have to run to multiple different places sometimes for just one tables order. read more

I just love an old diner and it definitely has that vintage diner feel. We've been twice so far. First time we sat at the counter and the second a booth. Great service both times. It has classic diner food but also some specials. I had to get the swedish pancakes, which are basically crepes but they had lingonberry, which you can't find anywhere besides IKEA. Sadly, the best part of the meal was the salad. Both our meals were, at best, so-so. Portions were small, I got 6 asparagus stalks ( parts of which were "woody" ), a very small piece of salmon which was over cooked, and a few way over cooked potato wedges with little to no taste. The potato wedges were listed as Greek potatoes. I have had some really good Greek potatoes but theses did not even approach Greek potatoes. I ordered an iced tea, and after drinking it I had expected the glass to be refilled, but it was not. My wife had a "glass" of wine, but the wine was less then a third of the small wine glass. Eleven dollars for about 2 or 3 ounces of wine, and my wife said it was not even a decent wine! My wife did not even eat all her dinner because it was so bad. This is now my new go to breakfast place. I love Le peep as well, but I do not like standing and waiting forever to get a seat. The staff is amazing and are on top of everything you need. It is right downtown Valpo so it is adorable and situated right next to BW3's. The inside is all brand new as it used to be Tony's pizza and has now turned into two different restaurants. When I think of Diner's I think of walking in and seeing a flat top grill with fresh ingredients being prepared in front of you and a case full of huge cinnamon rolls, biscuits, pies and great home cooking aromas, sorry to say not here. It's very clean and well decorated but I don't want little plastic containers of creamer that are luke warm, utter in a plastic containers along with the jelly, looked like cost cutting to me. The coffee was weak and my omelette and hash browns were mediocre not a hint of real butter anywhere, probably canola or some bulk oil. We will not be back. read more

Went there for Dinner on Valentines Day. The service was terrific, gorgonzola chips were great as always, Brussel sports terrific, my partners beef short ribs were great as well. My biggest issue was my steak. Ordered a medium rare steak and looked closer to medium well - well done. Obviously paying for a steak and it being extremely overcooked completely ruins the meal so that was a bit sad for such a great meal and venue to have that happen. Again, everything else was fantastic, I would just stay away from the steak. read more
