This is a hidden gem in Gonzales. Inside it holds the nostalgia of an old country store. The decor reminds me of time past. It was very lively from the chatter of the patrons and the servers directing people to their tables. The food setup is "cafeteria-style" but self-serve. The food stations were well kept and the food items was kept at safety standards. I must admit, after two plates of fried chicken ( well seasoned,moist inside and crispy outside) with a ladle of white beans ( tender and well seasoned) and corn bread. I didn't have room to taste of food items that they had to offer. Therefore, l must return! Yes, this place is highly recommended. You must come early because parking can be problematic. My first time here. It looks like a little country store. My party arrived about 20 mins before closing & everyone was so nice. They were running low on some items because they were closing. However, what I had was delicious! The fried chicken was the best! The batter was seasoned perfectly. The fried fish was good as well. I also enjoyed the green beans. I didn't enjoy the cabbage. I visited our local eatery, Country Kitchen for lunch in Gonzales, Louisiana. It was established in 1986, but it has been over fifteen years since I have visited the restaurant. I have no specific reason other than my work schedule in the past prevented regular visits. It is particularly unique, but relaxed atmosphere with antique paraphernalia on the walls and on display throughout; but the majority of the space is for dining and a serve yourself all you can eat buffet open Sunday-Friday from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Plates and bowls are on the wall next to the buffet along with a Keurig machine stocked with Louisiana's own Community Coffee Cafe Blend pods. From what I recall, little has changed over the years, except it is open on Friday evenings 5-8 P.m. for dinner. Today's buffet featured classic and local staples: fried chicken, baked chicken, meat loaf, pastalya, taco casserole, chicken and dumplings, shrimp and corn soup, egg rolls, and red beans and rice. Seasoned sides: corn, Italian green beans, carrots, mashed potatoes, sweet peas, yellow squash. Bread sides: biscuits, corn bread, and jalapeño corn bread. There is a full salad bar, with mixed green lettuce, pepperoni, cubed ham, and imitation crab meat with cucumbers, beets and a variety of dressings, imitation bacon bits, croutons and sesame seeds. The dessert bar had bread pudding, apple crisp, peach cobbler, and banana pudding, plus soft serve. Every item is made with love and the food is down home Southern cooking, like visiting grandma with the family. I came craving home made fried chicken, but couldn't resist sampling red beans and rice, Italian green beans, shrimp and corn soup and peach cobbler. The fried chicken was delicious and crispy with choices of white or dark meat. The shrimp and corn soup was loaded with shrimp and just enough spice, however a bit watery for me. The Italian green beans were seasoned to perfection with pieces of bacon and the red beans and rice were delicious and loaded with bacon and sliced sausage. My waitress, however was mostly absent and only attentive near closing, yet I observed other waitresses were very interactive and friendly. Bus boys were very efficient in clearing my dishes. If you are looking for family oriented, local, variety "Southern down home cooking" in a relaxed setting for $15 with tax, Country Kitchen is a winner. I look forward to a return visit on another day of the week for different choices on the buffet. read more

All of the staff members I encountered were friendly, and actually acted as if they were happy I stopped in to eat. All restaurant owners should stop by and see how to run a restaurant. Update: nevermind the written opinions of others (including me). Look at the pictures of the packed parking lot. When there is no place to park and people are parking in the grass, there must be something good going on in there. ----------- This is another good place to ruin your diet. The food is good ol' butter soaked, fat laden, deep fried home cookin'. It could use a bit more seasoning, but it's good enough for a second helping. The baked chicken was dry. Real dry. But the fried chicken was fantastic. Red beans and rice were good, but way too watery (put them in a bowl). The biscuits (excellent with the fried chicken) were small, but very fluffy, soft, and buttery. The building is old and a bit dingy, but nevermind that, we came for the food. Right? The only real turn off was the worker who was wiping down the buffet counter with a bleach solution. During service. I'm su she didn't get bleach in the food, but it's not an appetizing smell when you're looking over the pan of smoked sausage (which was also good). Three stars - food was pretty good. Nothing really to write home about, but it's good enough to get me coming back for more in the future. Went with a coworker for lunch and they had hamburger steak and fried chicken as the "protein" on the buffet. Everything looked good and the food temperature for a buffet was good. The environment was clean and had a rustic old town feel to it. Staff were friendly and attentive. Owner was also friendly and welcoming. If you're unsure of what to eat and you're willing to take the drive from where ever then this place is a good place to be. I really love this place. It is one of the only buffets still around during covid but they are really good about making people wear their masks and they changed from self-serve to cafeteria-style so it is still an all-you-can-eat. As was mentioned before, this place has a rustic, country, small town atmosphere. What adds to this is that the restaurant is filled with antiques (think Cracker Barrel) which are fun and interesting to look at. There is plenty of parking but I have seen it to at least 50% capacity during lunch so this place is popular with the locals. My favorite items are the veal cutlets with white gravy (Tuesday's) or the fried catfish (Friday and weekend). The pork loin is also amazing. I completely forgot to include that the fried chicken is absolutely incredible so I had to go back and edit this review. It's a buffet place and all the dishes there are just hearty Louisiana food! Walking in was like going into someone's house with all the southern atmosphere and I absolutely love it!!
